Chapter 142 Fireworks Atmosphere
Chapter 142: Chapter 142 Fireworks Atmosphere
Tu Hengsha became interested and wanted to hear what Mr. Su would say, so he leaned against the door to eavesdrop.Yet he heard Su Ronggui deflecting, "Grandma, I went back and forth on the subway with that girl today."
"What does taking the subway have to do with eating dinner?" Grandma asked the question Tu Hengsha wanted to ask.
"For the first time this morning, I squeezed onto the subway with that girl. There were a lot of people, so crowded it was hard to breathe, and some people even had a smell. But watching each of them hustle and bustle for life and future, busy yet fulfilled and full of hope, I found it intriguing. Even when I went to buy food at the cafeteria today—I occasionally eat at the company cafeteria, but I never felt the way I did today—some of them came together, one person weak while the other was their support, there were young people, elderly people, young people helping the elderly; some came alone, eating hurriedly, gobbling up their food before leaving, anxiety written all over their faces. Some sat in their chairs staring at their food in a daze, not taking a bite, until tears rolled down their faces. Some were full of joy, talking about how it was their last meal in the hospital and they’d be discharged tomorrow. Grandma, I feel that this is life, rather than just living. The sweet and sour, bitter and spicy, joy and sorrow, hope and despair—all these make up the many parts of life, and such days have a touch of everyday smoke and fire."
He narrated plainly yet profoundly, and she leaned outside, listening intently as if he was reciting a poem or reading an essay.
"Everyday smoke and fire," such beautiful words. Did his life lack smoke-filled everyday moments before?
Then she heard Grandma laugh and say, "Whether it’s smoke-filled or full of joy and sorrow, it’s always been there in this world. It’s just that you’ve never recognized it."
"Yes, I’m a journalist too, but I’ve always completed tasks mechanically. I haven’t really opened my eyes to see the world properly. Everyday smoke and fire, I think this aura is great; I wish for days filled with it," he held Grandma’s hand. "Grandma, let me stay in the alley with you."
Grandma Xu looked at him, sighed, and in the end, said nothing more.
He glanced at the closed door, "In the future, I’ll take her to better places to eat! Today’s just an exception."
Outside the door, Tu Hengsha stuck out her tongue at him, as if he implied she was gluttonous. She thought the cafeteria was just fine! Yet his words still echoed in her ears: The sweet and sour, bitter and spicy, joy and sorrow, hope and despair—they are all parts of life, and such days have a touch of everyday smoke and fire.
Isn’t life just like this? The high and mighty Mr. Su, only realizing this now?
She found a corner to make a phone call. The call connected, but Shu Hui seemed to be talking with someone on the other end.
"Mom, who are you talking to?" After asking, Tu Hengsha heard a door slam over there, as if it had just closed.
"Oh, it’s you, Little Sha!" Shu Hui answered from the other side, "You’re not coming back for dinner?"
"Yes! What are you doing? Have you eaten?" She thought she might as well bring takeout for Mom later; no need to cook for just one person.
"I’m just about to eat." Shu Hui sighed, "I mean you, eating out without telling me, no need to order me takeout. I can cook for myself."
"..." Since when did she order takeout for Mom?
"Oh my! You troublesome child!" Shu Hui exclaimed from the other side, "You’re ordering from Leisurely Manor? How much does that cost? It’s so expensive! Why do you waste money like this now that you have a bit? You need to be more prudent!"
Ordering from Leisurely Manor...
She didn’t even know which way the door of Leisurely Manor faced. How could she possibly order takeout from there? But clearly, it wasn’t she who ordered, so who did? She almost wanted to ask Mom if it was delivered to the wrong address! She glanced at the ward door, somewhat doubting her own guess.
Shu Hui scolded her for a long time, finally pressing her, "Did you hear me?"
"I heard, I heard!" she replied quickly.
"Don’t waste money like this anymore!"
"Alright, alright! Mom, I’ll be back later. You finish your meal and rest early!" she advised.
"Okay, don’t be too late. It’s not safe for a girl to walk at night."
"Okay." She agreed, hung up the phone, and returned to the ward.
In front of the hospital bed, Su Ronggui was placing food on the small table in front of Grandma. Grandma smiled at her, "All done? Come eat! The food from the cafeteria seems fine to me, although it’s too soft since it’s for patients. Next time, have Gugu take you somewhere else to eat."
"Grandma, you eat first." She handed the chopsticks to Grandma and then quietly asked Su Ronggui, "Leisurely Manor?"
He smiled, "Want to go eat there?"
"No way! Was it you?" Pretending to be clueless? Or was it really not him?
He nodded, admitting it.
"When did you order the meal? How did I not know?" Wasn’t she with him the whole time?
"Well, of course you didn’t know! You had me taking out the trash for you then!"
"Did you order at the newspaper office?" She whispered in his ear.
He nodded again.
"But... how did you know my home address?" She never invited him to her home!
"Didn’t you say I could read minds? I just looked at your heart and knew!"
Pure nonsense!
Only Grandma watched the two whisper to each other and smiled.
"You didn’t even tell me first!" Regardless, she felt quite at ease knowing he was thoughtful, even though he had never met her mother. But why did he do things without saying anything? If she hadn’t been quick-witted just now, she would have replied no meal was ordered and told them to return it!
"Gugu is just like that!" Grandma smiled, placing a big piece of chicken breast into Tu Hengsha’s bowl, "He’s clumsy with words, only knows how to foolishly act."
While eating, two people entered, whom Su Ronggui called "Xiao Guo and Sister Qian," "Have you eaten yet? Thanks for your hard work today. I might trouble you again later as I need to go out for a bit."
Sister Qian hesitated for a moment before asking, "Mr. Su? Should I still not prepare meals for tomorrow morning and evening?"
"..." Su Ronggui was speechless.
"..." Tu Hengsha was speechless.
"I mean, I already bought groceries today, and you said not to deliver them, so they went to waste. If you don’t need me to cook, I won’t buy groceries tomorrow," Sister Qian explained nervously, thinking she’d said something wrong.
"Do it..." Su Ronggui felt two stares piercing through him, he coughed, "Eat up, I’ll take you back after we finish."
On the way back, Tu Hengsha’s face was tense, "Mr. Su! You’re really something! Having a housekeeper who can cook, yet you deliberately fuss me?" It wasn’t that she didn’t want to help take care of Grandma, but Mr. Su was a liar! And a habitual one at that!
