Chapter 53: YOU BETTER FULFILL YOUR PROMISE SOON
"Momma, do I not have a father?"
And hearing Gavriel ask that question, Dove felt her heart shiver, and a thin layer of tears coated her eyes.
As Gavriel looked at her with genuine curiousness and innocence to his answer, Dove felt her heart hurt. She rubbed his temples with her hand gently and couldn’t help but ask, "And why are you asking about it all of a sudden today, baby?"
Before Dove knew that, she had blurted it out.
But then she bit her own tongue guessing that it would not have been a good question to be asked.
Well, but Gavriel did not seem to take it in a different way, and he blinked his eyes saying, "Because momma, everyone else has a father.
Andy also had a father. The big uncle in the company also has an old father. Even Tintin, the cat, in the cartoon has a father. Why don’t I have a father? Is it because I am a bad child, that the Lord did not give me a papa?"
Dove could see disappointment swirl in his eyes as he uttered the last sentence.
And as a mother, she just couldn’t see her child in such a way. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she did not think twice before blurting out, "Of course, Gavi has a father!"
And Dove saw her son raise his head to look at her at once, blinking his big eyes, and delight slowly spreading on her face. "Really? I have a papa too?" He seemed thrilled.
He seemed excited to hear that. And Dove always wanted that excitement to be present on her son’s face. She forced a sweet smile and nodded her head. "Yes, my baby. You also have a father. After all, my Gavi is such a good child. Why would the Lord punish him in such ways?"
A smile appeared on Gabriel’s face, which slowly stretched across his face and he blinked before saying, "But Momma, where is he now? Why has he never once come to meet me? Does he not like me?"
Dove frowned lightly, and shook his head, "Why would that be so? Of course, Gavi’s papa loves him a lot. It is just that, Gavi’s papa is in a very busy and dangerous place, doing his work. So that, he can protect me and Gavi.
But once he will be done with his work, he will come back to you with a lots of gifts and sweets for you.
He had also told me that, he loves Gavi a lot. And once he is done with his work, he will forever be with our Gavi, hmm?"
Gavriel listened to his mother with great fascination, and curiosity, as she answered to something that had been poking as a question deep in his heart.
Then after a while, Little Gavriel asked in all curiousity again, "So, my papa, does a very dangerous job? So that to protect me and you, momma?"
To which, Dove nodded her head readily and asked, "Of course, yes. Exactly like that."
"Just like a hero?" He asked again. To which, Dove chuckled and nodded , "Yes, just like a hero."
And hearing that, Gavi’s face beamed happily and he cripped, "So my papa is a hero!!"
Upon seeing the excitement in his face, Dove’s heart couldn’t help but swell. He was happy. And why would he be, after all, a father was a hero figure to most of the children.
Then again, after a while, Gavi looked at Dove batting his eyelashes and asked, "Then Momma, what is my Papa’s name?"
And at another question again, Dove slightly pressed her lips together, looking at her son in conflict.
Why does this little child of hers has to ask so many questions? Questions that she was not ready to answer yet. Or well, questions that she herself did not know the answer of.
And thinking of that, she sighed and put a gentle smile again, "Baby, let’s keep the curiousity alive, alright. Why don’t you ask your dad when you meet him yourself?"
Dove did a faint try to deviate the topic, as she did not really have any other way to try to settle this with her son. She couldn’t possibly say just any name to her son, isn’t it?
He was young after all, and he might just think of it differently.
What if he goes to telling everyone that his father’s name was whatever name she just told him?!
But surprisingly Gavi did not pester her any longer about it. And nodded her head readily
"Okay, momma! Either ways, I have a lot of questions to ask my papa. So I will add that to the list too." Gavi gave her a smile.
Dove smiled and rubbed his cheeks and said, "So, how about we sleep now, hm?" To which the little boy nodded and then he scooted his little body nearer to his mother’s embrace, before slowly closing his eyes and drifting to sleep, as Dove gently patted his back.
Seeing that, he fell asleep already so soon, Dove giggled and pressed a kiss on Gavi’s forehead and said, "My baby, he was already sleepy yet holding himself up to ask these questions."
But then thinking about it all, the smile erased from Dove’s face. When Gavi asked her those questions, Dove’s mind had gone blank.
She did not know what to answer. But then, all of a sudden, she remembered of that letter.
There were times when Dove would all of a sudden remember that odd and mysterious letter, which no one knew where it came from or who sent it.
It said that it was addressed by Gavriel’s father.
But Dove did not know what to think about it. It was not like she did not at all believe the letter, but as months passed and then years, no one came.
She had her pregnancy and then Gavriel is now three, but that ’father’, he never showed up.
It wasn’t that, Dove was waiting and wanting a man in her life. Beacuse, it that was it, then she could easily get a man, with her status and face.
But all Dove wanted was a father to her son.
Initially, thinking about the letter, Dove couldn’t lie but get a speck of hope. She wasn’t wanting that anonymous man to support her or anything, but all she needed was him to be a good father figure to her son, as he showed himself in the letter, that he cared.
But years passed and he never showed up. And just like that, Dove lost whatever speck hope that had created in her head. She was very capable of raising her son on her own. And she would continue doing so, just how she did all these years.
But today, Gavi asking him that question, it brought her back to square one. And she did not find anything better than to tell him the ’story’ about her father.
Dove slowly got off the bed, before walking out of the room without making any noise. She looked at her son sleeping soundly and lowered her head before closing the door.
’Whoever you are, I hope you are no one shady, and someone capable enough to be called my son’s father. And if you not, please stay away from our lives like how you are now.
And if you capable, then fulfill your promise soon. Because if you late enough, that my son grows up to know that what I told him today is a lie, then I myself will not allow you in our lives.
After Dove was gone and the door was closed, Gavriel peeked one eye open, before opening both of his eyes.
"Mamma’s gone." He murmured before giggling, as he sat up straight on the bed.
The crawling upwards, he pulled out a packet of chocolate chips from under the pillow and giggled again. Aunty Lisa had brought him some extra packets of chocolate chips that they did not tell Dove about.
Other wise, his mother would keep a strict look at his sweets, not allowing him to eat more chips, saying that he would get cavities.
But now he would get some.
While munching on the chips, he recalled what his mother told him.
"Hm...? So it is that I do have a father. And he is in some dangerous kind of mission work, to protect me and momma." Gavi nodded his head thinking about it, and smirked, "That sounds cool."
