Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Pointing at Nose and Scolding
The voting results came out the next day, and although Ye Yan seemed calm on the surface, she actually spent the whole night dreaming.
In her dreams, she ranked last in the entire hospital in terms of votes, even Xiao Xiao was ridiculing her.
She got up, went to work, punched in, and then opened the hospital’s app which she had been following.
If the voting results were out, the app would notify immediately; she usually didn’t have time to browse it, but today she was almost desperate to check.
At 10 a.m., after Ye Yan had written a CT order for the V8 patient, she took advantage of a moment while the family went to pay to sneak into the office.
"Dr. Ye," Xiao Xiao said, his eyes flickering as if he had something to say but hesitated.
Ye Yan was organizing patient information on the computer; hearing him, she looked up, "What’s happening?"
"Have you checked the app? The voting results are out."
Ye Yan had been busy with patients and hadn’t had time to open the app.
Now after accessing it, she indeed saw a hospital notification saying the selection for the hospital’s outstanding employee had been concluded.
The app didn’t allow comments, and that solitary notification hung in the most conspicuous spot at the top of the feed.
Actually, from Xiao Xiao’s expression, Ye Yan had already guessed the general situation; his first words upon entering weren’t "congratulations" but a careful probe.
This time, the outstanding employee wasn’t her; it was Bai Chutong.
What Bai Chutong told her yesterday wasn’t baseless; she really had been completely confident in winning the award.
"Dr. Ye, let’s strive harder next time," Xiao Xiao finally managed after struggling to find comforting words, he could only clench his fist, making an encouraging gesture.
"Okay, let’s strive next time," Ye Yan responded with a smile, "How’s the blood pressure today for bed V8? Remember to measure it morning, noon, and night, and let me know if there’s any fluctuation."
"Okay." Xiao Xiao saw that she was back to her normal demeanor and quickly recovered, relieved.
After Xiao Xiao left, Ye Yan stared blankly at the computer screen for a while.
She disliked bringing personal emotions into her work, and that minute of daydreaming made her feel quite guilty.
During the lunch break, Director Bi called Ye Yan to his office.
On the way, she ran into Bai Chutong. Compared to her dejected state two days ago, she now looked radiant, like a victorious general just returning from the battlefield.
"Dr. Ye, what a pity." Bai Chutong stood before Ye Yan with the posture of a victor. "It seems everyone really appreciates me. Of course, Dr. Ye you were also great. Keep trying next year, and maybe you’ll have a chance."
"Congratulations." Ye Yan left with those two words and entered Director Bi’s office.
As for her indifference, Bai Chutong simply shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly.
She believed no one could be indifferent to this honor, for with it she could outpace others, gain more, and eventually leave Ye Yan, who had always been ahead, behind.
"Teacher." Ye Yan closed the door as she came in. "Did you receive the email?"
"I did, but haven’t looked yet." Director Bi had been swamped with a project recently; he pointed to a chair beside him, "Ye Yan, take a seat."
After Ye Yan sat down, Director Bi put down his pen, studied her for a moment, and then sighed, "You must be feeling terrible, but it’s okay, no need to hold back in front of me."
Ye Yan smiled, "There’s definitely sadness, but I’m okay."
"The sadness is secondary; it’s mostly the injustice, isn’t it?" Director Bi discerned her thoughts, "Being outvoted by just one vote to Bai Chutong, anyone would feel resentful."
Ye Yan didn’t deny it.
She and Bai Chutong were separated by only one vote, and the person in charge had five votes, which could totally determine the outcome.
Although the director was generally fair, human desires exist, and nobody could guarantee not being manipulated.
This voting had always been unfair; Ye Yan had always known that, but besides feeling indignant, she didn’t think she, as a mere employee, had the power to change the whole system.
It was just indignation; at worst, she would try again next year.
"Don’t worry, I’ll definitely bring you on projects next year." Director Bi was most satisfied with her, as she was indeed outstanding, "How about I grant you a couple of days off?"
"Being off normally on Saturday is fine." She still had to think about the task Fu Xingzhou had assigned her; she needed to go to Hong Kong.
"Alright." Director Bi, knowing her inner strength, consoled her a bit more and then let her leave.
On her way back, she ran into Chai Chen and Xie Yang, both of whom offered their comfort and encouragement.
"Dr. Ye." A familiar voice came, a graceful lady descended from the elevator with her secretary, "Long time no see."
"Mrs. Qin." Ye Yan approached with a smile, "Today doesn’t seem to be your follow-up day."
She thought Mrs. Qin had gotten the date wrong.
Mrs. Qin smiled, "It’s not for a follow-up; I came to see a friend who just got admitted today."
"Are you talking about Mrs. Xu in V8?" Like them, being from the upper class, they surely had their social circles; Mrs. Qin and Mrs. Xu were close friends from their school days.
Ye Yan briefly told her about Mrs. Xu’s condition on the way; the CT results showed no severe issues, she could opt for conservative treatment or surgery.
Mrs. Xu, timid, was scared to undergo surgery and cried when she saw Mrs. Qin.
Not wanting to disturb them, Ye Yan waited outside.
Mrs. Xu said, "The Dr. Ye you introduced to me is really good, skilled in her profession and also of high moral standing."
Mrs. Qin laughed, "Did I introduce anyone bad to you?"
"Ah, in today’s society, however skilled one might be, it’s incomparable to those who flatter and have connections," Mrs. Xu lowered her voice, "I overheard a nurse saying that Dr. Ye just missed out on the hospital’s employee of the year award to someone who was penalized just days ago for being dragged to the VIP floor by their spouse, and they only differed by one vote."
"That happened?" Mrs. Qin was both shocked and angry, "No wonder Dr. Ye seemed a bit off; who wouldn’t be upset? Being dragged all the way to the hospital by a spouse and still becoming an outstanding employee is just absurd."
Both being main wives naturally disdained mistresses and blamed both second and third wives, angered further by such incidents.
"Alright, don’t be upset; ultimately, it’s the hospital’s internal matter, not ours to interfere," Mrs. Xu consoled, patting her friend’s hand, "I know you are upright, but we should keep our distance from matters that aren’t our concern."
When Mrs. Qin came out and saw Ye Yan, she avoided mentioning the award to prevent possibly uncovering old wounds.
However, turning around, she expressed her frustration in a Moments post, not naming names but hinting strongly; with only one hospital in Ao City having a VIP floor, it was akin to a direct slap in the hospital’s face, just short of outright scolding.
