Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Husband Calls

Ye Yan had sustained an injury to the right side of her forehead—though the cut wasn’t very long, it was extremely deep.

The doctor first stopped the bleeding, then repeatedly checked to ensure the muscles and bones weren’t damaged, and whether stitches were needed.

Meng Tian had just paid for the CT scan and returned. She heard a phone ringing nonstop in her bag; it was Ye Yan’s bag, which she was temporarily carrying.

Calls were rare at such a late hour; worried it might be an emergency, she balanced various forms in one hand as she dug out the phone with the other.

The screen displayed two words: "Husband."

Not having time to be surprised, Meng Tian pressed accept.

"Hello, you’ve reached me," she said, her voice tinged with a slight tremor.

After a moment of silence, a man’s slightly hoarse voice came through, "Who are you, and where is Ye Yan?"

The voice close to her ear held an indescribable allure, its cool undertones drawing a sensuous picture, seducing one unknowingly.

Meng Tian took a nervous deep breath. Although she had long known of his existence, this was the first time she heard his voice on the phone. It came with an aura that seemed to tear through the very air as if he were there in person, imposing and overwhelming.

"I’m Meng Tian, Ah Yan’s friend."

"Where are you?"

Before Meng Tian could answer, a nurse called out, "Has Zheng Jiayi arrived? Line up at the entrance of Examination Room 10."

"Are you at the hospital?"

"Ah Yan is injured. The doctor ordered an imaging test..."

She was cut off before she could finish by the man’s abrupt interruption, "Which hospital?"

Meng Tian returned to the examination room, assisting Ye Yan to get the brain CT scan.

"Your husband called just now," Meng Tian said, handing over the phone with a wistful look as they queued up, "When did you two get so close?"

"Husband?" Ye Yan was puzzled.

Battling dizziness and nausea, she unlocked her phone and scrolled through her contacts—indeed, Fu Xingzhou’s number was labeled "Husband."

She had never saved his number before. That day after leaving the Qingshan Club, he had been annoyed that she didn’t consider him a solid backing in times of trouble, and had personally taken her phone to save his number.

At the time, she hadn’t noticed what he labeled himself.

After that, it seemed she had never actually called him. If there was something to discuss, she would send a message; if he didn’t reply, she would just let it be.

"By the sound of his voice, he seemed really worried about you," Meng Tian, her gossip instinct aflame, teased, "Is this a case of affection growing over time in bed?"

Ye Yan handed back the phone, her head spinning so much that she had no desire to banter.

"You see, if you weren’t willing, you would definitely change that note," Meng Tian probed.

"My head is spinning."

"Come off it, we’re both doctors. Do you think I don’t know whether you’re too dizzy to change a mere contact label?"

Ye Yan simply closed her eyes, ignoring her.

"Actually, Fu Xingzhou isn’t all that bad. I mean, he helped with Xiao Zhun’s situation. If he really treated you as nothing more than an outlet for his desires, would he bother with such trivial matters?" Meng Tian mused aloud, "Do you think he might have developed feelings for you over time, reformed, and chosen you to be the only one for a lifetime...?"

"If you shut up now, I might get away with a few less stitches," Ye Yan said helplessly.

The first half of what Meng Tian said made some sense, but the latter half was just nonsensical babble.

To attribute such terms as a ’lifetime partner’ to Fu Xingzhou would probably infuriate Nalan Xingde enough to flip his coffin lid.

After the CT scan was done, it was going to be a half-hour wait for the results.

The doctor said the wound was rather deep, and there was a 90 percent chance stitches were needed.

Concerned about cosmetic stitching, Meng Tian hurriedly sought information and tried to find an expert in that area.

Ye Yan, on the other hand, was indifferent; the injury was at the edge of her forehead, not particularly noticeable, and she usually had some wispy, fluffy hair there anyway.

Before the results of the CT scan came out, Fu Xingzhou arrived.

He arrived in a rush, leaving his bodyguard far behind.

Ye Yan looked up to see him and was somewhat surprised.

Meng Tian hadn’t mentioned that he was coming.

"How did you get hurt?" The man’s face was dark as he asked briskly, his gaze falling on the bloodstained sweater, as if he was trying to burn a hole through it.

"It’s my fault..." Meng Tian saw that his tone was unfriendly and hurriedly tried to explain.

"Could I not know it’s because of you?" Fu Xingzhou sneered coldly, his gaze towards Meng Tian frosty, "When has she ever run out on her own late at night?"

Meng Tian tugged at the corner of her mouth, unable to retort.

"Fu Xingzhou," Ye Yan saw that he was confronting Meng Tian and quickly spoke up, "It’s not Tiantian’s fault."

"She says it’s her fault, you say it’s not her fault now, what, do you want me to write a hymn for your great friendship?"

Meng Tian: ...

How did she not know this guy had such a sharp tongue? In her impression, such a character should be the type who’s reticent, cold, and loves to put on airs, right?

"Ye Yan, where are Ye Yan’s family members? Come pick up the X-ray." Since it was late night emergency, there weren’t many people, and the X-rays came out quickly.

Just as Meng Tian was about to move, Fu Xingzhou had already strode toward the window.

Looking at the man’s tall and straight silhouette, Meng Tian stuck out her tongue, geez, quite frightening.

Ye Yan smiled helplessly, "That’s just the way he is. He treats me like this normally too; don’t take it to heart."

Meng Tian: Thanks, that’s comforting.

"He seems quite concerned about you." Meng Tian gently nudged her friend with her elbow, "It’s quite cold today, and he’s only wearing a shirt."

The overcoat was held by the bodyguard; it must have been because he left in such a rush he didn’t have time to put it on.

Ye Yan looked toward Fu Xingzhou, who was at the X-ray printer, a thin black shirt, his collar open, and the cuffs rolled up to his forearms, indeed looking a bit cold.

"Ah Si." Ye Yan called out.

The bodyguard looked over respectfully, and she pointed at the clothes in his arms then at Fu Xingzhou.

Ah Si got the message and immediately walked over, saying something quietly before Fu Xingzhou put on the overcoat.

"You seem pretty concerned about him too," Meng Tian, who had been watching the whole scene, commented with a meaningful smile.

Fu Xingzhou came over with the X-rays, and Ye Yan and Meng Tian leaned in to look.

Sure enough, a light concussion.

Being hit by a piece of glass, the chances of a concussion were not high, but she was just that unlucky.

Luckily, it was only a Grade I, the mildest type.

But she definitely couldn’t avoid getting stitches.

After leaving the hospital, Ye Yan’s forehead was bandaged due to the light concussion, and she had to rest in bed for two days.

"Does it still hurt?" Fu Xingzhou held her in his arms, his left hand carefully supporting her head, wary of touching the wound.

"Dizzy." Ye Yan closed her eyes, her face buried in his chest, the familiar scent of cedar acting like a sedative, lulling her into sleepiness, "And a bit nauseous."

"If you feel like throwing up, just say it, don’t throw up on me." Last time she wiped her nose on the young master’s pajamas, it almost made him turn against her.

"It’s too expensive; I can’t afford it." Ye Yan knew his plain-looking outfit, without any logo, was surely tailored.

"Smart of you." He seemed to hum through his nose.

Ye Yan didn’t want to talk, continuing to lean on him to alleviate her dizziness.

Faintly, she heard him ordering people to investigate tonight’s incident.

Her hand, resting on his waist, clenched, feeling his taut muscles from her grip.

"What’s wrong?" The man asked as he looked down, very patient.
