Mr. Bigshot Is Obsessed with His Hidden-Marriage Wife -
Chapter 45: Safety First
Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Safety First
Ye Yan was innocent, and so was Ye Zhun. He too was innocent, but a bastard.
"I’m sorry about what happened before." Lin Yihang didn’t lean in any closer, his face full of sincerity.
Ye Yan was confused, really unable to figure out which incident he was apologizing for.
"How have you been these years?" Lin Yihang asked cautiously.
How had she been?
Ye Yan had never truly considered this question.
She was recommended for college in high school, went straight to a PhD program, and started working in half the time it took others.
Teachers looked after her, colleagues respected her; the only setback was probably meeting Fu Xingzhou.
But now that she thought about it, it was her misfortune as well as her fortune.
Without Fu Xingzhou, she wouldn’t be able to solve her current predicament.
She couldn’t escape Jiang Yuan’s entanglement.
Besides being somewhat unrestrained, he actually hadn’t done anything to directly harm her.
"Pretty good, and you?"
"Also pretty good." Lin Yihang originally had a lot to say, but upon actually seeing her, he could only manage a few words, "Are you taking Ye Zhun out for a meal?"
"Yes."
"I know a restaurant nearby that’s quite good; let me take you there."
Ye Yan subconsciously wanted to refuse, but as soon as she opened her mouth, he guessed her thoughts.
"Ye Yan, give me a chance to apologize, otherwise I’ll always feel guilty."
Lin Yihang chose a Cantonese restaurant, asking the manager to arrange a private booth for four on the second floor by the window.
"Are you Brother Hang?" Ye Zhun’s head was filled with thoughts of the sugar figurine, thus he remembered it vividly. He was young when the incident happened and nobody mentioned it to him afterward, "Sister said you moved to Luhuan Island. It’s been many years since we last met, I didn’t expect Brother Hang to be a big lawyer now."
Ye Zhun didn’t know about Lin Yihang’s near act of sending him to jail, and he greatly admired this neighborly big brother.
Lin Yihang felt even more guilty, so he kept asking what Ye Zhun liked to eat and eventually ordered a full table.
Ye Zhun was truly famished. Being a teenager, his appetite was huge, and he ate ravenously.
"This is the spiciest dish in this Cantonese restaurant." Lin Yihang placed a plate of steamed fish with chili rings in front of Ye Yan, "I asked them to add double the peppers."
Ye Yan was slightly stunned, "You still remember I love spicy food?"
Lin Yihang smiled warmly, "I remember."
How could he forget?
He knew every single preference of hers from back then, often bribing her close female classmates for such information.
He just hadn’t expected that, ten years later, these details, once seared into his memory, would resurface vividly the moment they were bathed in sunlight.
Taking advantage of Ye Zhun going to the restroom, Lin Yihang asked, "You and Fu Xingzhou?"
He had kept this question in his heart all this way, hesitating until now to finally ask.
Ye Yan took a bite of fish, her face as calm as a polished mirror, "As you see."
"Do you understand him well?"
"Not really, I wouldn’t say I understand him deeply." She quietly ate her fish, her expression unchanged.
Lin Yihang’s hand holding the cup tightened slightly, "There are many women around him, one after another."
His promiscuous nature, she couldn’t be unaware.
"I’m almost done too," said Ye Yan with a smile, her eyes curving, "My shelf life is almost up."
She was emotionally stable, or rather, she was unwilling to show her feelings.
Mr. Lin suddenly felt as if his heart was clogged with cotton, experiencing an uncomfortable sensation that was hard to describe.
With his professional acuity, the moment Fu Xingzhou appeared at her side, he noticed the intense possessiveness in the man’s eyes.
He and Fu Xingzhou had no intersecting social circles, except for once when he had helped the Fu Family with a legal case. They had won the case, and the Fu Family’s payment was doubled.
Their relationship was strictly financial, and beyond monetary interactions, he knew of him only through hearsay. Yet, he had seen him gambling lavishly in casinos, surrounded by beautiful women.
The top floor of the casino housed his private suite. As Mr. Lin passed by, Fu Xingzhou, flanked by a girl who looked like a college student, greeted him lazily, "Lawyer Lin."
He watched as they took the elevator together, heading straight to the top floor.
It had been ten years, and he didn’t understand the current Ye Yan, nor did he dare to speculate about her reasons for being with Fu Xingzhou.
But a beast like Fu Xingzhou, once fixated on his prey, wouldn’t let go until he had torn it apart and devoured it completely.
Ye Zhun returned from the restroom, breaking up their conversation.
After the meal, Ye Yan took Ye Zhun back to school and chatted with his homeroom teacher for a while. When she left the school gates, she found Mr. Lin’s car still parked beside hers, with him standing outside, smoking.
"Mr. Lin, why are you..."
Mr. Lin hastily extinguished his cigarette. "I was worried about you going home alone, and I didn’t have anything else to do."
"Us doctors, returning home at dawn is quite normal," Ye Yan chuckled. "I’m used to it."
"It is a tough job being a doctor."
"You’re no different."
Mr. Lin laughed softly, his fringe tousled by the wind, his voice even lighter than the breeze, "Ye Yan, let’s write off everything from the past, shall we?"
"You... don’t hate me anymore?" Ye Yan didn’t know what he had gone through these past few days for such a complete change of attitude.
"You are innocent; all of this is Ye Jian’an’s fault. I’m sorry."
"Have you met Ye Jian’an?" Ye Yan sensed something from his words, her expression turning slightly cold. "What nonsense has he been telling you, or has he made some excessive demands?"
"He didn’t recognize me."
Ye Yan chuckled coldly, which was very much in line with Ye Jian’an’s character.
His mind was numbed by alcohol; he wouldn’t remember those he had hurt.
"It’s good he didn’t recognize you. Stay away from his troubles."
Mr. Lin nodded in agreement. Were it not for Ye Yan, he wouldn’t have let Ye Jian’an off so easily. He was a law-abider and wouldn’t indulge in illegal or life-threatening activities, but he was capable of making someone’s life a living hell.
But that would make things difficult for her.
"Let’s go, I’ll take you home."
Ye Yan took out her car keys, kindly reminding him, "I’m not a good driver, so don’t follow too closely."
Watching her slender and fragile silhouette, her hair fluttered by the wind.
What differed her from her teenage self was probably the absence of her carefree smile, but wasn’t he the same?
"Ye Yan." Mr. Lin suddenly called after her.
Ye Yan turned around, the moonlight softly enveloping her face, delicate and charming.
Those expressive eyes seemed to ask him: what is it?
The words Mr. Lin held back, "If you leave Fu Xingzhou, I will support you," caught in his throat, and he couldn’t utter a single word.
Forget it, it was too abrupt. He still remembered the absurd words he had once said, asking her how much she needed to be taken care of.
Saying something like that again could easily lead her thoughts astray.
After practicing law for so long, treasuring his words, he had never regretted a single statement as much as he had that one.
"Never mind, just drive slowly, safety first."
