Chapter 37: I Am Willing to Testify
Chapter 37: Chapter 37: I Am Willing to Testify
"Fuck, attack!" a young man shouted abruptly, and several others charged like bandits.
Ye Yan pressed her back against the door to keep as far from the battlefield as possible, not wanting to become a drag on Fu Xingzhou.
But the fight had barely started before it seemed to end.
Fu Xingzhou moved among them like a dragon, his left hand casually tucked in his trouser pocket, felling each attacker with swift punches and kicks, leaving them sprawled on the ground.
His trousers clung to his long legs, his black shirt perfectly tidy except for a tie that occasionally fluttered across his chest.
Mesmerized, Ye Yan found herself thinking of the phrase "corporate thug."
When he had initially gone after the assassin alone, that assassin likely had no idea he was outmatched.
The ground was filled with groans of pain, with some clutching various body parts, but the one beneath Fu Xingzhou’s feet was the most pitiful.
A small smudge on Fu Xingzhou’s leather shoe greatly bothered him.
Lifting his foot, he kicked the young man away, venting his frustration.
Seeing that peace was restored, the bodyguard emerged from the shadows, handing over a wet towel.
They hadn’t intervened earlier because they realized their boss was in the mood to handle things himself and waited until he satisfied his urge before showing themselves.
Fu Xingzhou wiped his hands with the towel and, with a used tissue and a single word, "Scram," he threw it fiercely at a youth’s face.
Realizing they had bitten off more than they could chew, the youths, no longer cocky, scrambled up from the ground and dispersed as if given a pardon.
Ye Yan passed over the clothes and watch she had been holding.
Fu Xingzhou fastened the watch onto his wrist, satisfied only after confirming it was undamaged.
Ye Yan knew it wasn’t that he couldn’t part with a watch; it was simply that this watch hadn’t yet reached its "expiration date" and was currently his "favorite," so he naturally took great care of it.
But once this "expiration" passed, it would join the others lying in the drawer, leading a lackluster existence.
That thought struck her.
"What are you dazing out for, let’s go," his hand ruffled her hair.
Only then did Ye Yan realize she had been lost in her thoughts.
"Did you get the stuff?"
"Got it."
The bodyguard beside him was carrying a box, a corner of a computer peeking out.
"That easily?"
Fu Xingzhou scoffed, "I bought this place, including their cameras and computers."
Ye Yan: ...
Although crude and simplistic, she liked it.
The retrieval of the cameras went smoothly; Fu Xingzhou handed them to a professional technician.
"We’re now off to meet someone."
Ye Yan had a hunch, "That victimized girl?"
"You want to come with me?"
"Together."
Although the girl’s parents had protected her, she still went to the psychological clinic every other day for therapy.
Fu Xingzhou somehow managed, and the two of them disguised themselves as doctors at the clinic.
The man in front of her wore a white coat over a crisp, handmade black shirt. Even with most of his face hidden by a mask, his innate charisma was indisputable.
Ye Yan couldn’t help muttering softly, "If you were a doctor at our hospital, business would definitely boom."
With those looks, even the healthy would feign illness just to register.
"Feeling a sense of crisis is a good thing, given that your man looks good and performs well."
Ye Yan: ...
How did he misinterpret her simple words like that?
They soon met the victimized girl, who was very petite and seemed timid; the incident had caused her significant psychological distress.
If it weren’t absolutely necessary, Ye Yan wouldn’t have asked her to recall that dark experience at this time.
The girl’s mother was waiting outside, and Ye Yan made sure the door was closed before she removed her mask.
Facing this excessively beautiful face, the girl stared at her, stunned.
She looked somewhat familiar.
"I’m Ye Zhun’s sister, my name is Ye Yan."
The girl’s eyes widened, and she covered her mouth to stifle a cry, quickly followed by tears streaming down her face.
Ye Yan quietly waited for her to stop crying.
"Sister," the girl suddenly stood up, about to kneel in front of Ye Yan.
Ye Yan grabbed her, "What are you doing?"
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry, it’s my fault what happened to Ye Zhun, please forgive me."
"Ye Zhun is still in detention, and your testimony is very important for his future."
The girl glanced toward the door, holding back tears, she whispered, "Sister, I’m willing to testify, but my mother disagrees. She watches me every day, not letting me talk to anyone. I secretly wrote down my testimony, but she found it and burned it all. She said that as a girl, if I testify in court, everyone will know about my near assault, and I’ll never be able to marry."
As she spoke, tears fell again, "Ye Zhun is a good person. He might not remember me, but I’ve always known him. He was the top student of our grade. Once, when I was hit by a soccer ball, he carried me to the infirmary."
It was then that she had fallen for this kind and handsome boy, even though he may not remember her.
She would secretly follow his every move, his smiles to his peers could make her happy for days.
If he ended up in jail because she could not testify, she would rather be dead.
"As long as you agree to testify, I will find a way to get you out," Fu Xingzhou looked down at her.
"I agree," the girl nodded vigorously, "Ye Zhun got into trouble because he was saving me; no matter what it costs, I’m willing to testify for him."
Ye Yan looked at the girl’s fervent and resolute eyes, and through the years, she seemed to see her younger self.
If someone had said those words to her back then, she definitely wouldn’t have let Lin Yihang suffer such an injustice.
Lin Yihang was angry and disappointed; and she, too, had been tormented by guilt for ten years.
The girl in front of her was luckier; she wouldn’t have to live the rest of her life with deep-seated guilt.
Leaving the therapy center, the two ran into Lin Yihang.
Lin Yihang glanced at Fu Xingzhou beside Ye Yan, seemingly confirming his previous suspicion.
She indeed was clinging to a powerful man, finding a backer.
Moreover, with her delicate and cool appearance, adept at manipulating men, which man wouldn’t be utterly captivated?
But did she know what kind of a man Fu Xingzhou was?
This man’s romantic scandals were as numerous as hairs on a cow, changing women faster than the adverts at Pujing Mall.
And she was just a plaything for the wealthy; once her novelty wore off, she’d be discarded.
But, she probably didn’t care.
Fu Xingzhou paid no attention to Lin Yihang, took Ye Yan’s hand, and stepped down the stairs.
They had only walked a few steps when his phone rang.
Fu Xingzhou asked Ye Yan to go to the car first, and he walked aside to answer the call.
Just as Ye Yan was about to leave, Lin Yihang called out to her from behind.
