Chapter 217: Chapter 217: Protect Her for a Lifetime
Luo Qianqian pulled something out of her pocket, took Tang Jingyao’s cup, and added a bit to it.
"Qianqian, what are you doing?"
"Shh." Luo Qianqian looked around, and nobody seemed to notice them; even if someone glanced over, they would just assume that she and Jiang Ying were drinking.
"This doesn’t seem right," Jiang Ying felt somewhat conflicted, yet also annoyed.
Back when she was with Tang Jingyao, there was never a need for these "despicable" methods.
But now, she couldn’t even be sure if Tang Jingyao would touch her when they were in a room alone.
"Originally, you were his fiancee; it’s Meng Tian who flew into the dovecote. I even suspect that she has had her eye on Tang Jingyao for a long time and framed you just to compete with you for him."
Jiang Ying looked dejected, "Actually, Miss Meng doing this might be a blessing in disguise. Otherwise, it would’ve been my mother enduring these three years of hardship. She’s older and frail; who knows what she would’ve been like had she gotten out."
"You’re just too kindhearted and filial. A woman with a prison record is considered ruined for life. What will you do if you can’t stay with Tang Jingyao?"
"But he’s already married, I can’t be the third party who breaks up someone’s marriage."
"There’s a limit to being kindhearted," Luo Qianqian said frustratingly, as if trying to knock some sense into her, "That Meng woman knew about your relationship with Tang Jingyao and yet she still interfered as the third party. Relying on her status as the Meng Family’s daughter, she forced both families into a marriage alliance. If anyone’s bad, she’s the worst. Just looking at that kind of woman makes one feel disgusted."
Seeing Jiang Ying’s head still lowered, Luo Qianqian, driven by irritation, was clawing at her own head, "Anyway, I’ve paved the way for you; it’s up to you whether you follow it or not. Think about it—if Tang Jingyao really abandons you, you’ll have to go back to selling paintings in the gallery. But, the gallery might not want you—after all, you have a criminal record."
Jiang Ying’s body stiffened.
At this moment, Tang Jingyao closed the bathroom door and took out his phone to dial Meng Tian’s number.
Meng Tian was driving, and seeing the caller ID, she didn’t hesitate to press the hang-up button.
Tang Jingyao was persistent, calling again.
The annoying ringtone kept on sounding incessantly, like a death knell.
The image of those two kissing surfaced before Meng Tian’s eyes, like a needle incessantly pricking her heart.
She took decisive action and added Tang Jingyao’s number to her blacklist.
Finally, the car fell silent.
Yet the sudden silence only added to her irritability. Her chaotic emotions had nowhere to settle and simply scattered everywhere.
Meng Tian drove back to the police station; at this time, she needed to numb herself with work.
The first thing she did upon returning to her office was to print out the "divorce agreement" saved on her computer.
It was devoid of any property division or financial disputes—the agreement was simplistically just a single page.
Meng Tian picked up the pen, the tip hovering over the signature line.
She didn’t blame Tang Jingyao.
Aside from the legal fairness, she indeed disrupted the relationship between Tang Jingyao and Jiang Ying.
Had she not sent Jiang Ying to prison, they would have surely been very happy together by now.
Tang Jingyao was always supposed to be with Jiang Ying; she was merely occupying that space for a while.
Now, it was time to return what was rightfully hers.
Meng Tian curved her lips into a pallid smile as she signed her name, her stroke firm enough to press through the paper.
After signing her name, she set aside the agreement and continued working on several reports.
"Forensic Doctor Meng," Lu Changchen stood outside and knocked on the open door, "I thought you left?"
He had witnessed Meng Tian leave; when had she come back?
"I remembered there were some things I hadn’t done, so I came back. Captain Lu, are you working overtime again today?"
These past few days there had been no cases, and the station was uncharacteristically calm.
"Going home means being alone anyway, might as well review some materials here since there’s a meeting tomorrow," Lu Changchen said as he walked in, just when Meng Tian was putting away the agreement.
His gaze was sharp, and even though she moved quickly, he still saw the words "divorce agreement."
Meng Tian was getting a divorce?
Was she not happy with Tang Jingyao?
Lu Changchen knew this was Meng Tian’s privacy and would definitely not ask more about it, his eyes shifted as he pretended to see nothing.
"Captain Lu, your timing is perfect, I have a question to ask you."

When Tang Jingyao tried calling again, he found the line was now unreachable.
He called back to Zhou Shan, and the servant said Meng Tian hadn’t returned.
He knew the phone number to their local police station, so he called to ask; the duty officer told him, Forensic Doctor Meng’s car was parked in the lot, she was probably working overtime.
Only then did Tang Jingyao feel relieved.
He stepped out of the restroom to see the crowd playing and having a great time.
"To you," Luo Qianqian raised her glass as he took his seat, "in thanks for your help with Yingying, allowing her to gain her freedom so quickly."
If Tang Jingyao had not intervened, Jiang Ying might have sat in jail for another three or four years.
"It was the right thing to do," Tang Jingyao said, glancing at Jiang Ying who was shyly looking at him, her eyes filled with affection.
Tang Jingyao picked up the glass and drained it in one go.
"Tang Jingyao, I want to ask you on Yingying’s behalf, do you still want her or not?" Luo Qianqian was drunk and her face flushed, her eyes swimming with intoxication.
She was Jiang Ying’s best friend, as well as a second-generation rich kid.
When Jiang Ying first joined their circle, many people looked down on her, some even bullied her secretly, including Luo Qianqian.
Then one time, Luo Qianqian was cornered in an alley by someone she had offended, and it was Jiang Ying who happened to pass by and called the police to save her.
To save her, Jiang Ying was injured, and to this day, there is an ugly scar on her arm.
Luo Qianqian had never imagined that the person she once ridiculed could be so kind and just, and from that day on, she became friends with Jiang Ying.
Whenever someone bullied Jiang Ying, Luo Qianqian would confront them head-on.
Luo Qianqian, with her extensive underworld connections, was not someone many dared to offend; hence, people began to hold a newfound respect for Jiang Ying.
And with Tang Jingyao’s influence, Jiang Ying thrived in their circle.
Her sunny and kind nature, along with her thoughtfulness, had charmed all of Tang Jingyao’s friends, and she had very good relations with them.
Now that Jiang Ying was back, everyone was waiting for them to rekindle their past romance.
And Meng Tian was nothing more than a tool for Tang Jingyao to use for revenge and to alleviate his boredom; she would soon be swept out the door.
Tang Jingyao held his glass, his gaze falling on the wine’s surface,
The dark red liquid shimmered, reflecting the glaring lights from above.
The ruckus around him contrasted sharply with Tang Jingyao’s silence.
Jiang Ying looked at him full of expectation, but his reaction struck her like a bolt of lightning.
"Ah Yao," Jiang Ying’s hand covered the back of his, "do you despise me for having been in jail, for being dirty, unworthy of you?"
"No," Tang Jingyao looked at the pitiful girl in front of him, so frail, so evoking of sympathy.
When he first saw her being bullied in the gallery, he felt a strong urge to protect her.
Such a girl, he wanted to protect her for a lifetime.
