Chapter 98: Chapter 98: Taodu Mountain, Shentu and Yulei
In the East Sea lies a giant island, upon which grows a peach tree.
The shade of the peach tree covers three thousand miles, but the tree bears no fruit.
At the northeastern edge of the shade stands a bronze gate, tarnished with verdigris.
The gate is a hundred zhang tall and eighty zhang wide.
The door is half-open, revealing a pitch-black scene on the other side. From time to time, wisps of demonic qi escape, accompanied by ghostly wails and wolf-like howls.
On either side of the gate stand two generals, each towering a hundred zhang tall.
The one on the right has blood-red skin, eyes blazing like torches, tusks protruding past his lips, clad in multicolored armor, and holding a golden halberd.
The one on the left wears a black battle robe, his complexion jade-like, his eyes emerald green. He holds no divine weapon, appearing calm and carefree, his right hand lightly stroking a golden-eyed white tiger at his side.
The two figures, resembling Gate Gods, remain motionless, akin to statues.
Upon closer inspection, their gazes reveal interest as they fixate on a figure beneath the tree’s shade.
The man appears heroic with sword-like brows and starry eyes. Clad in an elegant black robe, his eyes gleam like sharp blades, making one’s brow ache merely by meeting his gaze.
He grips a long sword firmly. The blade is deeply embedded in the ground, its hilt as delicate as cicada wings, and the entire sword is crystal clear.
The immense bronze gate emits a suction force, as if attempting to pull the man inside. Only by clutching the hilt does he manage to steady himself.
It is unclear how long he has held on. His palms bleed profusely, staining the ground crimson.
Despite the unrelenting flow of blood, the man remains silent, his gaze resolute.
"Zhengyang, it’s been two hundred years. Why not give up?" the black-robed man on the right sneers.
"I am not an evil ghost—I am a Ghost Immortal!" Zhengyang enunciates each word deliberately. "Shentu and Yulei! You have no right to seize me!"
"Who are you waiting for? It seems to be someone important?" Shentu on the left inquires curiously.
"I’m waiting for my master. He has already ascended to the immortal rank, but he will surely return," Zhengyang replies with unwavering determination.
"Ascended to the immortal rank? Ridiculous! Do you think just anyone can ascend to the immortal rank? He’s probably long since entered our Ghost Gate," Shentu and Yulei roar with laughter.
The Ghost Gate behind them confines the world’s most wicked spirits.
The island is called Taodu Mountain, and the tree is the Queen Mother of the West’s peach tree, gifted to the Yellow Emperor.
When the peach tree first sprouted, all the evil ghosts of the world swarmed toward it, eager to partake of its essence.
The Yellow Emperor, upon seeing this, found it intolerable. He dispatched two great generals to guard against the evil ghosts, suppressing them within the Ghost Gate. They were either confined or devoured by Yulei’s golden-eyed white tiger.
Taodu Mountain is a one-way island; there is entry but no escape. The day Zhengyang fled to this mountain, he too was captured by the two generals.
However, noticing he lacked the bloodthirsty aura of an evil ghost, they made a wager with him.
They agreed not to attack him directly, instead relying solely on the suction force of the Ghost Gate. He could endure for as long as he could resist.
To their surprise, he endured for over two hundred years.
Hearing the two insult his master, Zhengyang furiously retorted, "The Grandmaster of Ghost Valley—how dare you mere Gate Gods compare to him!"
Their laughter abruptly ceased, and their expressions turned livid. The ten-zhang-tall golden-eyed white tiger raised its head and roared to the heavens.
"Fine! It seems you wish for death!"
Yulei patted the golden-eyed white tiger on the head.
The fierce tiger pounced upon Zhengyang.
Having endured two centuries, Zhengyang was utterly drained. Seeing the white tiger lunging at him, he had no strength to resist and could only close his eyes in resignation, awaiting death.
The white tiger drew ever closer; he could even smell the stench of its breath. Zhengyang’s heart was filled with unwillingness—he would never meet them again.
Roar!!
"Hold!"
Whoosh, whoosh!
Dozens of beams of light descended from the sky.
The light formed a barrier, separating the white tiger from Zhengyang.
Bang!
The white tiger slammed against the barrier, yet it did not waver. By the time it broke through, a man had already carried Zhengyang away.
"Master! You’ve finally returned! Your disciple is Yingzheng!"
Zhengyang opened his eyes and saw Song Lin, overjoyed.
"How dare you! Snatching my prisoner!! Not even the Heavenly Emperor can save you!"
Shentu and Yulei erupted in anger, beginning to channel the power of Taodu Mountain. The entire five-thousand-mile island trembled violently.
"Gentlemen, might I speak a word?"
Song Lin turned around, the moonlit sigil on his brow emitting divine light.
At the sight of the moonlit sigil, Shentu and Yulei immediately ceased their divine skills, dropping to one knee.
"Greetings, Envoy!"
This scene left Ann Qi and Yingzheng stunned.
By now, they had a general understanding of their cultivation world and had grasped the level of the Ghost Valley Grandmaster from back then.
Their reverence for the Grandmaster stemmed mainly from gratitude and awe for his unexplained disappearance.
Yet seeing even these divine beings bow to the Grandmaster left them feeling utterly ignorant.
Song Lin himself was also taken aback.
Could the blessing of the Moon Cultivation Great Witch be this powerful?
What he once thought to be a mere ordinary designation now revealed unexpected implications.
"Rise, please. I ask only for your understanding—this is my apprentice. Should he have offended you, I ask your forgiveness."
"Since he is the Envoy’s apprentice, then this is merely a misunderstanding. Come, have a seat," Yulei gestured in the air.
The roots of the peach tree formed several stools, and Shentu and Yulei conjured a pot of fragrant jade nectar with their primordial spirits.
"What a pity there’s no peach left; otherwise, we’d have the Envoy enjoy some," Shentu, the fiercer-looking one, forced out a friendly smile.
After some idle chatter, Song Lin refrained from interrogating Yingzheng about his altered appearance, instead conversing with the two deities to extract useful information.
Learning they were the ancient Gate Gods Shentu and Yulei, Song Lin was deeply surprised.
Why would these two treat him with such deference?
The Gate Gods, upon hearing that Song Lin had assisted the Queen Mother in preventing Yayu’s resurrection, were equally astonished.
Yayu was no ordinary deity, but one tied to the ancient Heavenly Emperor, having contended for the throne only to lose.
Though the Great Witch held only a Secondary Ninth Rank title, being personally appointed by the Queen Mother was proof of its extraordinary worth.
After hours of conversation, Shentu and Yulei could no longer contain themselves.
"Envoy, when will you release us from this place?"
"Release?" Song Lin asked, puzzled. "Might you have mistaken me for someone else?"
"We don’t know, but King Wu said the first deity to climb this mountain would be the one to free us," Shentu and Yulei declared with conviction.
They had been dispatched by the Yellow Emperor to guard the gate. What they thought to be a temporary post had stretched into countless years. The Yellow Emperor had become a legend, likely long since ascended, while they remained trapped on the island.
Later they encountered King Wu of Zhou, Ji Fa, petitioning him for release. The Emperor had only stated someone would one day come to liberate them.
"Oh, and there was also Muu Emperor!"
"When the Muu Emperor traveled the world with the Eight Horses, we intercepted him. He made the same claim that someone would climb the island to free us, and then save all life under heaven."
"Do you have any other useful information?" Song Lin felt uneasy.
The excuses King Wu and Muu Emperor had given were thoroughly unreliable.
Now, the two brothers were filled with resentment. If he procrastinated further and they flew into a rage, he might be forced to start all over.
Moreover, this might be the key to acquiring karma.
"Yes, one more thing. The Muu Emperor said great fortune lies at the far east, awaiting one with destiny," Yulei informed.
"The far east? What’s there?"
"It could only mean Tangg Valley, the bathing place of the sun, where the purest yang energy under heaven gathers."
Pure Yang Energy?
Song Lin’s eyes lit up.
First-rank Pure Yang Energy could bathe and cleanse the Divine Soul—what an extraordinary blessing that would be!
Of course, this was merely speculation. He would need to investigate firsthand to confirm.
With this thought, Song Lin rose and said to the two brothers, "Gentlemen, I have some clues. May I proceed to Tangg Valley to explore?"
Regardless of whether he could free them, they needed his help, so the initiative was his.
"Very well, but leave one of your apprentices here," Yulei requested.
"Agreed. Ann Qi, stay here. Yingzheng, come with me!"
Song Lin took Yingzheng and flew out of the vast sea of shade.
