Chapter 268: Chapter 245: Internal Strife within the Pact, Mingxing Peak Bestows the Heavenly Book (1/2)_2
True Demon Temple.
Devouring Demon Hall.
The stench of blood rose to the heavens, and the ground was smattered with bloodstains.
Within the great hall, a group of Taoists, half-human and half-demon, stood on both sides.
The closer to the interior, the eerier the Taoists’ appearances became.
Among the throng of Taoists stood a square-eyed, hairy Taoist, beside him a man with a menacing hooked nose.
It seemed the crowd of Taoists faintly regarded these two as their leaders.
The two were none other than Qinghong and White Bone Temple’s White Bone Taoist.
Three individuals knelt before them, hands and feet bound behind their backs.
Qinghong stood before the three and sneered, "Yun Lian, Five Ghosts, Mu Ke—all three of you should just surrender. Why stay beneath another’s roof unwillingly? Song Lin isn’t coming back. Why don’t we divide up what’s left of his treasures?"
"Bah! The temple master has shown me boundless kindness; how could I be like you ingrates who so easily forget loyalty?"
Five Ghosts spat fiercely toward them.
Despite being dragged here by their own sect’s higher-ups and surrounded by enemies, the three remained unwavering.
"If Master Song returns, none of you will escape!" Five Ghosts Taoist sneered coldly.
He had been the earliest to swear loyalty to Song Lin, following him from the Divine Establishment Period to the Core Formation stage, from a rundown Taoist Temple to the leader of alliances.
The three trusted Song Lin implicitly, believing he could work miracles.
"Ha! Song Lin? Can he even come back alive?"
Three figures emerged from the shadows of the rear hall; the elder leading them had hair as white as frost.
"The Jungle Three Cities!"
The three captives exclaimed in shock.
This man—wasn’t he Bai Hao?
"Let me tell you the truth: Huoyun Taoist will soon kill Song Lin in the Void Realm. Your Song temple master has no possibility of survival."
Bai Hao gazed mockingly at the three kneeling men.
"The Taoist Master..." Five Ghosts muttered blankly, his heart overflowing with disbelief.
The Taoist Master personally taking action—could Master Song truly survive that?
But whether Song Lin lived or died was only one issue; against these three Core Formation stage Jungle Three Cities leaders, even the Xuanke Temple higher-ups might struggle to hold their own!
Those wavering among Qinghong’s camp began to firm their resolve.
"One last chance: either reject the recruitment and die at my hands, or join us, and together we’ll divide up Xuanke’s fortune."
Thinking about Xuanke Temple’s Moon Brick trade, greed flickered unabashedly in Bai Hao’s eyes.
The three exchanged glances before Yun Lian let out a bitter laugh, saying:
"My days were numbered long ago, yet Master Song granted me the title of Land God and saved my life. Such immense grace—I could never align with the likes of you!"
His words caused a wave of discomfort among the crowd.
Many of them had experienced kindness from Song Lin as well—back when Huoyun had cut their benefits, leaving them desperate, it was Song Lin’s intervention that solved the crisis.
Furthermore, Xuanke Temple’s powerful magic veins had reignited vigor in their sects.
Compared to the loyalty of the three captives, their betrayal now seemed particularly disgraceful.
Seeing morale falter, Bai Hao thought to himself that Yun Lian’s speech could not be allowed to continue.
"So you’ve chosen noncompliance?" He bellowed, "Kill them!"
A green light shot out from Bai Hao’s sleeve, splitting into three streams aimed directly at the trio’s heads.
Five Ghosts closed his eyes, resolute in his decision to die.
Unable to fight back, death was the only response they could offer to repay Song Lin.
Boom!
At that instant, the rooftop exploded.
Taoist Soldiers and Taoists surged inward.
The Fox Immortal Taoists distorted perceptions with illusion techniques; Snake Immortal Taoists spewed venomous fire and toxic water.
"What!" Qinghong’s gaze sharpened. They dared storm the hall—truly fools courting death.
"Attack!"
Qinghong barked the order.
Battle erupted on all sides.
Suddenly, a Taoist called out in panic, "My spells aren’t working!"
"I can’t summon Taoist Soldiers! Damn it!"
Most of the rebelling Taoists were trained or had studied magic at Xuanke Temple.
At this moment, their Taiji Thunder Seal and Divine Medium Immortal Techniques completely failed.
Their combat prowess plummeted in an instant.
Meanwhile, three streams of light whisked away the three captives.
"Follow me!"
Bai Hao left some of his forces behind for the fight but swiftly led his trusted subordinates out of the shattered roof.
As soon as they emerged, they were confronted by a battalion led by the colossal Little Giant Spirit God and a figure accompanied by a white fox—the White Bone Demon God.
Both possessed Core Formation combat strength.
"I’ve been waiting for you!"
Behind the Little Giant Spirit God stood Wang Ziyue, who sneered, commanding five thousand Taoist Soldiers and the newly formed Little Giant Spirit God into action.
"Kill!"
The Jungle Three Cities clashed with the two powerhouses, the collision shattering the heavens and the earth.
The battlefield extended far beyond.
The Jungle Three Cities’ goal was to lure Xuanke Temple’s leaders and kill them, while other Xuanke Temple members conducted a separate siege.
As soon as the battle commenced, Bai Hao’s expression shifted dramatically as he was thrown backward by a surge of immense power.
"Impossible!"
Bai Hao’s face twisted in disbelief.
He might be old and unable to utilize his full strength, but surely he wasn’t so feeble as to lose to a few Divine Establishment Perfection opponents!
Before he could think further, the Little Giant Spirit God charged toward him once more.
...
Xuanyu City, Zhengsi’s residence.
Within a tranquil study, Zhengsi gazed at the image on the folding screen.
The projection displayed the battle involving Shi Yinhua and the others.
Scanning it briefly, Zhengsi waved his sleeve, causing the screen to fade away. He smirked slyly, "The Jungle Three Cities are doomed to lose."
A single glance revealed the outcome to him.
Everything was going exactly as he had anticipated.
Even if the Jungle Three Cities somehow survived, Zhengsi would find a way to end them.
He wondered whether Huoyun would make it back in time.
Otherwise, the play lacked just a hint of excitement.
Zhengsi stood up, and the screen shifted to display Xuanke Temple.
Remaining sect leaders from Mei Mountain Jungle were gathered under the eighteen heads, attacking the temple.
Though numerous, they could not break Xuanke Temple’s defenses.
Chaozhen, Granny Huu, and Elder Liuu guarded the entrance.
The Fox Clan and Snake Clan had also revealed their true forms to assist.
The two sides had been locked in a standoff for a day and a night.
Zhengsi pondered. The clash still lacked intensity.
Shi Yinhua could kill the Jungle Three Cities, but the prolonged stalemate arose out of caution—seeking to capture them alive and avoid political repercussions.
A dead ordinary Taoist wasn’t the same as dead Jungle Three Cities leaders.
After a moment of thought, Zhengsi decided to escalate things further. From his sleeve, he drew forth a crystalline azure orb.
Lightning flickered faintly within, hinting at its immense power.
He hurled the orb toward the folding screen’s depiction of Xuanke Temple.
...
Mingxing Peak, a thatched hut.
Song Lin slowly regained consciousness, his gaze falling on an elderly man with a sickly yellow complexion.
"Master Zhi Xin? Why are you..."
Why did he look as though he was barely clinging to life?
"Cough, cough, an old affliction. Better worry about yourself."
Zhi Xin dismissed him with a wave of his hand.
Song Lin then recollected the memories before he had fainted.
"How long was I out?"
"A day and a night—not too long."
"Thank goodness, and thank you for aiding me, Master Zhi Xin."
Song Lin sighed in relief. He had been on the verge of ruin and was fortunate that Zhi Xin had intervened.
"Your belongings are on the table," Zhi Xin indicated the clutter on a nearby surface.
Song Lin pushed himself off the bed.
Though he had no significant injuries, he was thoroughly drained from exertion.
He approached the table to gather his things, preparing to return—he needed to check on the temple’s situation immediately.
Among the items were the white jade gourd, the Five Thunders Heavenly Master’s Token, and other magic treasures, still untouched by prying divine senses.
Not that he distrusted Zhi Xin; the elder was a man of great integrity. Song Lin only feared exposure to outsiders.
Seeing Zhi Xin’s frail state, a thought flickered in Song Lin’s mind. He retrieved seven scrolls of the Yuann Tiangang Secret from the Dragon Mansion Jade Gourd.
"What’s this?" Zhi Xin asked, puzzled.
"They’re Heavenly Books I happened across—I thought they might assist you."
Song Lin understood that revealing too much could lead to suspicion.
He believed in paying kindness with kindness, and Zhi Xin’s rescue demanded reciprocation.
Zhi Xin’s condition clearly stemmed from depleted Primordial Energy; whether he could survive another decade was uncertain.
Perhaps Yuann Tiangang’s Secret Technique held the potential to save him.
"Hmm, I’ll accept it. You have pressing matters—leave now and visit later."
Zhi Xin casually accepted the scrolls without immediately examining their contents.
