Chapter 937: Chapter 937 Preparing for Battle Chapter 937: Chapter 937 Preparing for Battle The Archangel continued, “The second phase of the competition will start tomorrow morning and last until two winners are identified. Participants can view the detailed rules in their mission logs; I won’t go into them now. There’s still some time before the competition starts, so all guilds should take this opportunity to prepare.”
The Chieftain nodded and added, “The Angel has made it very clear, and I won’t elaborate further. You’ve all demonstrated your capabilities by reaching this stage. I hope you can go even further.”
The King of the Light Faction snorted and said, “You make it sound so easy, not even mentioning those from the sub-dimensions who are glaring covetously at us. I have only one request–to teach those beings from the sub-dimensions a harsh lesson.”
The other two gave a wry smile but said nothing.
Subsequently, the NPCs of the three major factions settled their camps, and the players disbanded, each checking their mission logs to understand the detailed rules.
The members of Starfire gathered to study the rules in the mission logs as well.
Sister Li frowned and said, “The second phase seems a bit chaotic.”
Li Yao nodded, the second phase was indeed complex.
The second phase: Wilderness Conquest.
Details:
1, The goal is military merits. Within three days, only those with the most military merits qualify for the third phase of the competition.
2, Earning military merits is similar to the first phase: killing a player from one’s own faction earns 1 merit, killing a player from an opposing faction earns 1.3 merits, and killing a player from the sub-dimension earns 1.5 merits. Additionally, destroying appropriate offensive or defensive equipment also earns corresponding military merits.
3, The military merits from the first phase can be exchanged for supplies and equipment before the competition starts; those merits will be void once the competition begins.
…
“This military merit exchange table is quite interesting; though it seems complicated, there are still patterns to follow,” said Unparalleled Beauty.
Sister Li raised her eyebrows and asked, “What do you mean by that?”
Unparalleled Beauty pointed to the military merit exchange table and said, “Look, these items are offensive and defensive, and you can even exchange them for strongholds. This means at the start of the competition, there are generally two strategic options: either exchange for offensive items like siege catapults to earn points by attacking strongholds or exchange for a stronghold and some defensive items to guard it and wait for others to attack.”
The Guardian Angel chuckled and said, “We’ve got quite a few cards up our sleeve; we should definitely go on the offensive. This giant stone thrower looks supremely domineering; it’s bound to be thrilling.”
“I also think attacking is the most exhilarating. Guarding is so boring,” added the newcomer Mu Zi.
Li Yao nodded and said, “What do the others think? Let everyone share their thoughts.”
The group then burst into a lively discussion, with most favoring offense.
Those who chose offense argued simply that since elimination wasn’t based on extermination but on military merits,
one must earn the most military merits in the shortest time to advance. Defense was too passive.
Those in the minority who chose defense argued that since Starfire had many enemies, defending was a viable option. If they went on the offensive, they risked being bogged down by other guilds in the wilderness, and if that happened at sea, Starfire would be in peril.
After all, being at sea and on land are completely different; at sea, with warships and magic shields, Starfire was unafraid of facing more enemies, but on land, even if Starfire were better equipped, they were still limited and facing an assault, they probably couldn’t even last three days.
If wiped out, their hopes of topping the military merits would be nothing but a pipe dream.
After a lengthy debate, Sister Li noted down all the valid points.
“Guild leader, we’ve been talking for a while, and you haven’t yet shared your thoughts,” said Sister Li.
The other members realized this too, since Li Yao hadn’t yet offered his opinion.
Li Yao nodded and said, “I do have some thoughts, and everyone has made good points, but we can only choose one path. Even though we have a lot of military merits, if we’re distracted, it won’t do us any good. Let me share my thoughts.”
“I personally lean towards defense. Of course, it’s not that I prefer defense, but rather, we have no choice but to defend. The recent sea encirclement is still vivid in my mind; if we hadn’t been well-prepared, we would have been eliminated already. The guild master of Half-Moon Guild hit the nail on the head; it’s not that Starfire is hated, but everyone wants the stronghold. And in this battle, who is the most likely visible champion?”
The members’ faces showed sudden comprehension.
“You must understand by now, Starfire is too dominant, and although our naval battle in the first phase was victorious, it also made many more wary of Starfire. If someone leads another charge against us, not just the guilds from the three major factions but also those foreign players might band together to eliminate us, the biggest threat,” said Li Yao.
“I personally think that while attacking is good, we don’t lack enemies. Don’t forget, our military merits are almost the sum of the second to the tenth ranks. With so much we can exchange for, we are undoubtedly everyone’s prime target,” continued Unparalleled Beauty.
Eventually, they unanimously agreed that defending was the safest option.
“Now let’s choose a stronghold. There are quite a few places where we can establish a stronghold. A standard stronghold costs only 0.5 units of military merits, but the costlier ones in good locations go up to more than ten units. We should pick an excellent stronghold,” Sister Li, pointing to three spots on the map, said, “I think these three are quite good.”
Sister Li’s chosen locations indeed had strategic advantages. One was on the top of a small hill, and adjusting the map displayed that the hill had cliffs on two sides and one extremely complicated terrain, leaving only one accessible path to the hilltop. If armed with defensive machinery, it would certainly be a fortress–easy to defend and hard to attack, costing 5 units of military merits.
Given the cost of this stronghold, apart from Starfire, it was unlikely that any other guild would consider it since five units of military merits were nearly all of their total.
The second stronghold was in Thorn Forest. According to the map, this area was home to numerous Wild Boars, and the stronghold was across a vast chasm with only a thorn forest serving as a bridge.
Though the site was small, it was more than sufficient for a minor stronghold.
And looking at the terrain, it was even more defensible than the first, although it would be challenging to position many defensive items, and if it were breached, there would be no room to retreat. It was practically a dead end…
