Chapter 94: Chapter 59 Penicillin
Upon returning to the courtyard, Ran Yan saw Maid Xing kneeling on the porch cutting fabric, looking dejected, and occasionally sighing.
When Maid Xing saw Ran Yan had returned, she hurried over, took the mask from her, looked at Ran Yan’s face, and said with sympathy, "Wife must be exhausted, right? In a few days, when we return to the main house, the number of people seeking your medical help will likely decrease a lot."
"Yes, Maid Xing, please prepare a bath for me. I want to bathe," Ran Yan said.
Maid Xing smiled and replied, "It has already been prepared; it’s indeed time for you to bathe and rid yourself of the illness."
Ran Yan had only recovered her strength not long ago, and she was inherently frail. Having diagnosed two patients and dissected two corpses that day, she was indeed a bit overwhelmed.
Soaking in the warm water, Ran Yan felt somewhat drowsy.
"Wife, Maid Xing has ordered this slave to attend to you during your bath," a crisp voice sounded from outside.
Ran Yan was not accustomed to having someone watch her bathe, but she was too fatigued this time and could let the maid help wash her damned long hair, so she said, "Come in."
The person who entered was Xiao Man, who had helped Ran Yan with her makeup in the morning. She was holding a small bath bucket with a wooden lid, from which steam was faintly rising through the cracks, and a scent of flowers wafted through the air.
"What is it?" Ran Yan asked.
Knowing that Ran Yan was not as fearful as she appeared, Xiao Man smiled gently, revealing the dimples on her cheeks, "The slave saw the honeysuckle in the courtyard blooming nicely, so I picked some for the Wife to use in her bath. It’s great to bathe with honeysuckle in the summer!"
Ran Yan nodded, still thinking to herself, Xiao Song had indeed guessed right; Fan Chun had probably been drowned in a bath bucket, but... whose bath bucket was it?
Seeing that Ran Yan had not responded, Xiao Man bravely stepped forward and said, "Wife, may the slave wash your hair?"
"Alright." Ran Yan agreed.
Xiao Man pulled a high stool from the corner and placed it beside the bath bucket, then placed the small bath bucket on top of it.
Ran Yan, while splashing water on herself, watched Xiao Man’s movements, her pupils suddenly constricted—high stool! Wooden bucket!
The high stool in the bathhouse was a bit roughly made, but it looked very similar to the stool that had toppled under Wan Lu the day she was hanged. People in the Tang Dynasty still knelt; their tables were very low, and the only seat-like furniture with legs was the Hu bed, which was nowhere near as high as this.
And then there was this bucket lid...
"Xiao Man, come stand opposite me," Ran Yan said slowly.
Xiao Man was pouring flower petal bath water into the bath bucket. Hearing Ran Yan actually remembered her name, she happily responded and joyously placed the remaining half-bucket of water on the high stool beside the bath bucket, and stood opposite as instructed.
Ran Yan stretched out her hand from the bath bucket, touched the small wooden bucket, and poured all the water inside it into the bath bucket. Then she started to study the body of the bucket and the lid, occasionally holding the two items above Xiao Man’s head, making Xiao Man tremble, fearing she might actually throw them at her head.
The mouth of the wooden bucket was wide and the base narrow, but it was very heavy; whether it was the base or the rim, being hit on the head with it would cause more than just swelling; at minimum, it would break the skin. The wound on Fan Chun’s head was curved, likely caused by this bucket lid.
The size and curvature of the bucket differed, and presumably the murderer had hit Fan Chun in the face with the bucket lid in a moment of desperation, then immediately realized she had not died, nor had she fainted...
Ran Yan abruptly stood up from the bucket, reached out, and grabbed Xiao Man by the neck.
Xiao Man stared dumbfounded at Ran Yan’s shapely body, her skin as smooth as mutton-fat jade, glistening with water and standing amidst the swirling steam, stunningly captivating.
While she was entranced, Ran Yan suddenly grabbed her neck, forcibly pressing her down to the edge of the bath bucket, her face almost touching the water surface, and she desperately shouted, "Wife, spare my life! Wife, spare my life!"
Ran Yan came to her senses, realizing she was standing naked in the bath bucket, coughed awkwardly, and silently sat back down in the water, explaining to the still-panicked Xiao Man, "I... just thought of something."
Hearing such an explanation, Xiao Man was far from reassured. What had she thought of that made her gesture with the bucket lid at her head one moment and try to submerge her in water the next?
But... the Wife’s body was truly a sight to behold! Xiao Man peered with her sparkling, beady eyes at the slightly visible body beneath the water, and whispered softly, "Wife, let the slave wash your hair."
Ran Yan nodded. She had figured out a few more things by then and no longer dallied, allowing Xiao Man to help wash her hair, which was long enough to drape over her back and hips.
