Chapter 83: Chapter 52 A Special Visit

Gems piled like jade, pines lined like emerald. Young man unmatched in radiance, in this world there is no second.

Ran Yan didn’t know where she had read this phrase, but at the moment when she glanced at him, it surged from the depths of her memory.

Dressed in a dark purple silk robe with broad sleeves, his chest and neckline adorned with light-colored floral patterns, both arms and the tips of his sleeves embroidered with colorful floral designs, he wore a white jade belt. This lavish attire fitted him perfectly, accentuating his broad shoulders and narrow waist.

Under the flickering and soft light, his face appeared exceptionally three-dimensional, his eyebrows slightly raised, his deep eyes, like the night, seemed to sparkle with bright cold stars, his fine nose above lips that were slightly moist and curved upwards in a polite nod to Ran Yan.

The word "radiant" may not quite suit him, it is only the phrase "unparalleled" that he truly lives up to.

Ran Yan’s gaze fell on his purple attire. It was well-known that during the Tang Dynasty, there were strict regulations on the colors of men’s clothing. Only princelings and officials of the Third Rank and above were permitted to wear purple. Anyone else who dared wear purple could be accused of presumption and punished for the crime.

They had said they wanted to enter the city before curfew, but knowledgeable people understood that such restrictions were only for ordinary citizens. Someone like him would simply need to reveal his identity and naturally, he would not be kept out of the city. Did he not wish to expose his identity, or was it something else? Ran Yan became discreetly cautious.

"My surname is Xiao," he said, his voice still enchanting.

Ran Yan bowed slightly, "I have seen you before, Young Master Xiao." Yet in her mind, she thought, there were no influential families or high-ranking officials with the surname Xiao in Suzhou, nor were there any Third Rank officials.

They stood in silence, while Xing Niang and Shu Niang on the other side were at odds with each other. It was unexpected that Shu Niang’s explosive temper hadn’t flared up. Ran Yan curiously looked over and saw Xing Niang’s eyes slightly reddened, her gaze filled with quiet resentment as she stared at Shu Niang, her handkerchief twisted tightly in her hand, clearly trying hard to endure.

Shu Niang, angry yet not explicitly showing it, suffocated by her irritation, turned her mouth away in a huff, deciding that what you don’t see doesn’t bother the heart.

"Xing Niang, go arrange the rooms," Ran Yan interrupted the silent battle between the two.

Xing Niang withdrew her gaze, acknowledged with a sound, and followed the corridor to the next courtyard. The estate didn’t have many courtyards, just four small ones, while the rest were large flower gardens, fields, and isolated houses. Other courts hadn’t been inhabited for a long time; they were cleaned once at the beginning and once in the middle of each month. Now, at the end of June and the beginning of July, the courtyards should be clean and wouldn’t require much effort.

It wasn’t hospitable to let guests stand in the hallway. Ran Yan said, "We seldom have many visitors in the estate, so it may take a moment to tidy up. Young Master Xiao, why not accompany me to the tea room to sit for a while?"

"Certainly," Young Master Xiao replied with a faint smile, his serious and steady demeanor suddenly becoming lively. He didn’t seem to be an indifferent man at all.

Ran Yan turned to lead Young Master Xiao and Shu Niang towards the tea room.

This side courtyard was the closest to Ran Yan’s own, separated only by two doors. Her courtyard was small, with no spare rooms, so she usually stored her myriad of jars and bottles in this tea room. Thus, this courtyard had only this one place suitable for entertaining guests at any time.

A flicker of confusion passed through Young Master Xiao’s bright eyes. It seemed odd to him that this woman, who appeared to be a Noble Lady, could handle even trivial tasks like lighting lamps and tidying up with such ease, which wouldn’t be possible unless she did them frequently.

A faint scent of herbal medicine permeated the room, and on a low table near the window stacked jars and bottles of varying sizes; the tools used for autopsies were kept in a small box at the corner of the wall.

Shortly after seating themselves indoors, two Maids came in with curd juice and black plum juice. These were commonly consumed during the summer months. Curd juice, a byproduct of cheese-making from cow or sheep milk, had a sour taste, which was quite refreshing, but Southern people generally found its flavor too strange to enjoy.

Both types of juice were placed before each guest, and Shu Niang, without a second thought, chose the curd juice.

"You know Medical Skills?" Young Master Xiao, seemingly uninterested in the juices, brought his gaze back from the various jars and looked at Ran Yan.

His handsome face was tinged with a faint smile, creating an aura of nobility without pretense. Even someone as reserved as Ran Yan couldn’t ignore it, thus she replied, "I have some knowledge."

Ran Yan’s demeanor was neither warm nor too aloof, and though she constantly wore her mask, Shu Niang thought this attitude was an insult to their Young Master, and she glared indignantly.

The sharp look from Shu Niang gave Ran Yan the impression that if her next action displeased her, a knife might just fly her way, but Ran Yan didn’t mind because Shu Niang’s demeanor, although more restrained than what was witnessed earlier in the day, clearly wouldn’t dare to act out in Young Master Xiao’s presence.
