Chapter 255: Chapter 161: Fresh Corpses Available
Although Lady Su wasn’t particularly beautiful or charming, her demeanor and immense family wealth meant that it was hardly surprising some gentlemen paid her attention.
However...
Ran Yan felt a vague sense of unease in her heart as she looked again at the vague silhouette of the Su residence, where she could still make out the figure of someone standing at the gate. Was someone being that attentive? Or was it a deliberate entanglement...
When the carriage reached the main road, nearing the inn, the coachman suddenly pulled over to the side of the road. After a moment, the sound of orderly footsteps could be heard passing by. Peering through the gap in the curtain, Ran Yan could see a group of Government Officials passing by, heading in the direction of the Su Family residence to the east.
Following them, someone rode by on horseback, one of whom was a man as thin as a bamboo pole, bobbing unsteadily on the back of his horse, easily recognizable.
After thinking for a moment, Ran Yan called out, "Doctor Liu!"
Liu Qingsong pulled in the reins, and the horse turned half around before moving towards the carriage. With a beaming smile, Liu Qingsong said, "Lady Seventeen! I am on my way to apprehend a suspect, would you like to join us?"
Ran Yan lifted the curtain and asked with puzzlement, "A suspect? Has one been found so quickly?"
"According to my personal analysis, this person is most likely not the murderer, but the County Magistrate wants to make an arrest, and I’m just going along for the excitement... The thing is, I heard that the Su Family has a beautiful woman in charge." Liu Qingsong laughed so hard that his eyes disappeared, an unknowing person would think that Lady Su was a wife he’d long cherished.
"Are you saying Lady Su is the suspect?" Ran Yunsheng asked incredulously.
"Lady Su doing business is naturally bound to offend quite a few people, perhaps someone wants revenge against her. There has been someone lingering at the Su residence door for many days now," Liu Qingsong said.
From his words, it seemed this had nothing to do with the murder case. Ran Yan felt increasingly frustrated; two people had died in a previous case and hadn’t caused such a stir, yet it seemed the County Magistrate couldn’t wait to show his attentiveness before the Su Family had even reported it.
The value of human life is unequal; it has always been so.
"Just arresting someone at the door, don’t tell me you really think Lady Su will come out to welcome you personally?" Ran Yan said indifferently, and let the curtain drop.
Liu Qingsong was stunned for a moment. The County Magistrate had not personally taken the field this time, only sending an arrest officer. Following along, he would only be able to watch the excitement. With this thought, his interest waned, and he turned back to join Ran Yan at the inn, feeling that it would be more interesting to delve into how the cloud hairpin came to be in Ran Yan’s possession.
As night fell, the shops along the road had closed their doors, with only a lantern hanging over the entrance of the medical hall.
After returning to the inn and freshening up, Ran Yan was about to practice the flute when she heard the sound of a zither from the back courtyard. Without even looking, she knew the fluid and clear zither music came from Sang Chen’s hands.
Sang Chen was like a piece of pure, white jade; Ran Yan neither wanted to hurt him nor get too close. She was not the kind who could suffer in silence for the sake of others’ feelings.
After listening for a while, Ran Yan pushed open a crack in the window, allowing the watery moonlight and the cold night breeze to spill into the room. Beneath a white plum tree in the courtyard, a figure in a gray robe sat cross-legged with the hem of his garment fanned out around him, his slender hands playing the zither, each lift and flick of his fingers exuding ease and grace.
His fair and clean face had become more angular than it had been more than a month ago, revealing a mature man’s air.
In his silent and unsmiling demeanor, there was a lonely charm that was distinctively attractive.
Ran Yan hesitated for a moment, reminded that people of ancient times matured early; she truly had forgotten that Sang Chen was just a boy of eighteen or nineteen.
After watching for a while, Ran Yan picked up a large overcoat and stepped out the door.
The moonlight was lovely, and the poignant zither music, combined with the chilly breeze, complemented the autumn moon. The figure in gray was coated in a faint white halo; Ran Yan stopped in front of him.
The sound of the zither abruptly ended.
"Put this on," Ran Yan said as she handed the overcoat to him.
"Wife..." Sang Chen suddenly became nervous, not knowing where to place his hands. After hesitating for a while, he quickly reached out to take the overcoat but didn’t put it on. Instead, he held it in his arms.
Looking at him holding the overcoat, Ran Yan said, "You’ve had a hard journey bringing Huan Kong all this way."
"No... it wasn’t hard," Sang Chen replied, casting his eyes downward. He didn’t know what else to say, afraid that if he said the wrong thing again, it would upset Ran Yan. Although he didn’t know why Ran Yan was angry today, he could feel her anger.
"Do you like me?" Ran Yan suddenly asked.
Sang Chen’s face flushed with a rush of blood, his earlobes nearly seemed to bleed, yet he mustered the courage to nod his head.
