Chapter 163: Chapter 104 Follow Me_2

Su Fu still had a cold expression but suddenly said, "Come with me."

"Where to?" Ran Yan was taken aback, and then furrowed her brows. It couldn’t be another midnight call to examine a body, could it!

The room fell silent. Su Fu stood like a statue, not making even the slightest movement, just steadily gazing at Ran Yan, his lips slightly pursed. After about two moments, he slowly said, "I’ve thought it over, and it’s nothing important. I don’t need your help."

Ran Yan watched as he stood up, brushed aside the curtain, and walked out. The bamboo curtain swayed. Outside the curtain, Ran Yan glimpsed a figure in black pausing momentarily. Suddenly her eyelids grew heavy. She quickly grabbed the handkerchief by the couch’s side to cover her nose and lips but still collapsed onto the couch.

Su Fu stood outside the curtain for a while, then walked back in, his cold gaze seeming a bit softer.

"Ah Yan," he said softly, uttering just those two words.

While feigning unconsciousness, Ran Yan’s heart trembled. His indifferent yet magnetic voice made her name sound particularly pleasing, making her want to open her eyes and see what expression Su Fu was using to call her name. But, to find out why he had used sedatives again, she forced herself to resist.

That single "Ah Yan" made Ran Yan feel as if they were old friends who hadn’t seen each other for many years.

"For the first time, I regret not having chosen to take office," Su Fu leaned forward, his long fingers with thick calluses gently brushing across Ran Yan’s cheek. "If I had taken office, things might have been very different now. Perhaps I would have had a complete family. Even if I met you then, we would still be just two parallel lines."

In the dim light, Su Fu raised his hands to his eyes, carefully examining them, just as Ran Yan often spaced out while remembering the past and staring at her own hands.

Ran Yan did not open her eyes, but she could feel his subtle emotional shifts.

The room was quiet. Ran Yan thought she could no longer sense Su Fu’s presence and was just about to open her eyes when she suddenly felt a breath close to her cheek. He murmured in a hoarse voice, "If I were to kiss you now, would it count as taking advantage of someone?"

Ran Yan’s heart clenched, still hesitating whether or not to open her eyes, Su Fu’s breath was already near her lips. He merely hovered above her lips for a moment before moving away.

"Still pretending to be asleep?" Su Fu’s voice was tinged with a hint of amusement.

Ran Yan suddenly opened her eyes, meeting the visage of a handsome face with a smile as vibrant as summer flowers, emitting a dazzling glow in the darkness.

A gentleman rogue, radiant as the stars.

"When did you administer the sedative?" Ran Yan was puzzled. She hadn’t seen him make any suspicious gestures. The most dubious moment was when he sat down, his robe fluttering, creating a slight breeze.

"Weren’t you sitting by the window just now, drinking water?" Su Fu constrained his smile and said to her, "Your guard is still as weak as ever, but your sense for concocting antidotes isn’t bad. Soaking the antidote in the handkerchief was a good idea; if it weren’t for your unstable breath while pretending to faint, I really would have been fooled by you."

Ran Yan’s eyes lit up. She immediately understood that Su Fu was teaching her how to protect herself.

Seeing her expression, Su Fu took out a thin booklet from his bosom and tossed it on the couch, "It’s a method of breathing and exercise, to strengthen the body."

"Didn’t you say you only knew how to kill people?" Ran Yan unapologetically accepted the item, taking the opportunity to ask if she could also learn a few techniques of murder.

"One does not need to be taught to kill. If you truly despise someone and wish them dead, you will naturally find every possible way to lead them to their demise," Su Fu adjusted his robe and stood up to leave.

Outside the curtain, his low voice came through, "But when you find yourself able to casually put someone to death, you will notice that the blood staining your hands grows ever more, until... you yourself feel filthy. Do not kill lightly."

This was a path of no return.

"You understand everything, yet why do you choose this path?" Ran Yan pressed.

Su Fu paused in his steps and said indifferently, "My mother was a Death Soldier raised by others. Is it strange that I can kill?"

"That skeleton is your mother," Ran Yan stated, not as a question but as an affirmation.

She didn’t know whether the bones examined that night were the same ones Su Fu had brought back, but the skeleton he would rather die to retrieve must be that of his assassin mother.

Su Fu neither admitted nor denied, his figure flashed, and he disappeared inside the house like a ghost, leaving only a faint noise from the front window.

Ran Yan had not yet looked away when she felt her eyelids grow heavy. She collapsed onto the couch without touching the antidote.

Before falling into a heavy sleep, she thought about when he had administered the sedative! Could repeatedly being sedated have side effects?

A dreamless night.

Ran Yan opened her eyes in the early morning and saw a plain oil-paper umbrella and a long flute next to her couch. She remembered that the umbrella handle was a sword, so this flute must also be more than just a musical instrument.

Ran Yan reached out to find the hidden weapon within.

"Wife." Wan Lu rushed in, panic evident in her voice. Seeing that Ran Yan was awake, she hurriedly said, "The Government Office has sealed off Yingmei Temple, and it’s surrounded by government soldiers who say they’re going to search the entire temple. They’ve already started the search, and the slave is here to help you get dressed. They might reach our courtyard at any moment."

Ran Yan wasted no time, set down the flute, stood up, and let Wan Lu help her into her clothes, then sat at the vanity, where Ge Lan had already brought in water.

Just as she was ready, someone knocked heavily on the door.

"Search the courtyard! Search the courtyard!" Ran Yan stepped out of the room, and a group of government soldiers had already stormed in, lining up at the entrance of the courtyard.

The Team Leader glanced at Ran Yan wearing the mask and bowed with hands clasped, "I am on official duty. If there is any offense, I seek the indulgence of Lady Ran Shiqi."

Ran Yan hummed indifferently and stepped aside.

The Team Leader waved his hand, and the two rows of government soldiers quickly entered the house. Ran Yan put on her shoes and stood in the courtyard to wait. Sounds of rummaging came from inside the house, but it was evident they were being restrained.

"I heard an old acquaintance was here, so I came to visit," a rich, slightly lazy voice called out from the entrance, its leisurely pace brushing softly and ticklingly at the heart. (To be continued.
