Chapter 150: Chapter 96: Jade Orchid

Jiangnan rain, the wind carries it across the long river. Green roof tiles fade into the shadowy willow banks, and the scent of red silk freshens the plum-scented air. It sprinkles, distinctly brisk.

Autumn rain in the mountains swept away the remnants of the day’s warmth and also washed away the bloodstains left by Su Fu as he fled from the ambush. The pursuers reached near Yuncong Temple and then lost the trail.

Su Fu lay on his side on the ground, carefully discerning the movements of those people until the sound of footsteps gradually faded and disappeared before he slightly relaxed.

Ran Yan stared straight at the ceiling, not a hint of sleepiness. She turned over and peered through gaps in the bamboo curtain at Su Fu, who lay with his back to her, motionless. It was unknown whether he was asleep; the cloth bag containing the bones was still by his side.

For the sake of those bones, Su Fu had actually been willing to sell himself for five years—it was truly inconceivable. Who was inside that bundle?

The room was quiet; both of them gradually relaxed from their vigilance, sleep beginning to take over their consciousness.

Perhaps because she thought too much about her past life before sleeping, the moment Ran Yan fell into a slumber, that incessant nightmare emerged.

In an old factory building, more than a dozen lecherous men with sinister smiles approached a young woman around twenty-four or five. Ran Yan’s heart leapt to her throat; she longed for something different this time. Unfortunately, it was the same—an attentive young man in the front catching the woman’s attention while a skinny middle-aged man sneakily attacked from the side.

Ran Yan yelled, "Yunlin, that skinny man has lime powder! Dodge it!"

Qin Yunlin paid no heed to her cries. He spun and delivered a flying kick straight at the young man’s neck. The skinny middle-aged man saw his opportunity and quickly pulled a plastic bag from his coat. He ripped it open and hurled the contents at Qin Yunlin’s exquisite face.

The dozen men, seeing their chance, immediately swarmed in and subdued Qin Yunlin. They taped his mouth shut.

Someone produced previously prepared cooking oil to cleanse his face of lime powder, grinning wickedly, "Such a pretty face, what a pity if we couldn’t see it later!"

Ran Yan, sweating all over with urgency, rushed forward to kick and beat those beasts, but her body was intangible and could not affect them at all.

"Quick, put the police uniform on her." Another man pinched Qin Yunlin’s chin and sneered, "You cops, always strutting around in your uniforms, let’s see how grand you are now. How about it? Later, you’ll serve all thirteen of us—make sure you keep up that cop’s spirit and hold on!"

Two men roughly tore Qin Yunlin’s clothes off, exposing her white underwear and prominent breasts, and forced her into a set of imitation police uniform. One of them, finding his mouth dry with lust, couldn’t resist any longer. He reached into her underwear, roughly kneading and then probing with his fingers, exclaiming in surprise, "Ha! Boss, this chick is still a virgin!"

"Tsk! It’s rare to find a virgin of this age these days, so appetizing!" The lead man quickly stripped and turned to the others, "Bring out the camera! Their robust team captain will surely love this exciting footage!"

Ran Yan watched Qin Yunlin struggle in utter despair, sweat drenching her back.

"No!" Ran Yan screamed as she saw a man put on a mask to cover his face and crudely spread Qin Yunlin’s legs and lunged forward.

Then, she heard the soft sound of drizzling rain outside the window; a cool breeze blew under the quilt, letting Ran Yan realize her entire body was soaked, a chill seeping into her skin.

"You had a dream too," the cold voice outside the curtain said wearily.

Ran Yan uttered in exhaustion, and Su Fu outside handed her a cup of water through the bottom of the curtain, "Have some water."

Ran Yan sat up, took a sip of water, and recalling his use of "also," asked, "You have nightmares too?"

"I often dream," Su Fu paused, "but they’re not nightmares."

For Su Fu, no dream was more cruel than reality; all that was beautiful was sealed in memories of the past, savored alone in the quiet of the night.

"Although you appear very cautious, you are still not wary enough of strangers," Su Fu observed as the figure inside the curtain began to slump, the cup about to fall. He swiftly entered, deftly caught the cup with a neat hand movement—half a cup of water still steadily inside.

He sat beside her bed, unblinkingly watching Ran Yan’s sleeping face, murmuring, "I never trust anyone..."
