Chapter 147: Chapter 94: Bloodstained Clothes

Ran Yan and her servants gathered inside the house for an entire afternoon, only stopping when the little nun came to deliver their dinner.

After finishing the evening meal, Ran Yan sent them all to bed early as she lay on the couch, struggling to fall asleep for a long time. Ge Lan was an intelligent woman, unlike Mrs. Xing who was swayed by emotions, nor was she as careless as Wan Lu. It was foreseeable that sooner or later, she would realize that the soul residing in this body was no longer the same.

Ran Yan didn’t want to harbor mutual suspicion with such a loyal person, so she planned to tell Ge Lan the truth. If Ge Lan could accept it, she would continue to stay; if not, Ran Yan would arrange a proper solution for her. The worst-case scenario would be the secret being revealed. Such gambles were not common for Ran Yan, but in the journey of life, there are always one or two occasions where there is no choice but to bet.

However, today didn’t seem like the right moment. Wearing only a simple white undergarment, Ran Yan carried a lantern to the porch and looked at the side room, which was already dark, before sitting down on the floor of the porch.

It was already autumn, and the rainy weather meant there were fewer mosquitoes than usual. Ran Yan stared quietly at the curtain of rain connecting heaven and earth, a hint of melancholy surfacing in her heart. Her past life seemed like smoke and clouds, like a dream. Every time she woke from that dream, she felt particularly lonely in this unfamiliar world.

Ran Yan, illuminated by the faint light of the lantern, stared intently at her delicate, boneless hands. The hands from before had dissected a total of a thousand corpses, certainly not the delicate fingers she had now.

After an unknown amount of time, soft footsteps sounded on the porch. Ran Yan looked up to see Ge Lan carrying a satin dress and walking towards her.

Ge Lan sat down beside her, spread out the satin dress for Ran Yan to put on, and looked at her quizzically, as if to ask, "Wife, why haven’t you slept yet?"

"Can’t sleep, and you can’t either?" Ran Yan asked.

Ge Lan smiled and nodded.

"Let’s talk then," Ran Yan said.

Ge Lan nodded, quickly went inside the house, and brought back paper, inkstone, and a brush.

Once she was seated, Ran Yan said, "If you have any questions, just ask."

Ge Lan looked slightly surprised, emotions rippling quietly in her clear, spring-like eyes. After watching Ran Yan silently for a while, she lowered her gaze, spread out a sheet of paper, and wrote while lying on the floor: "Slave feels that the Wife seems both familiar and strange. Has the Wife suffered a lot these past two years?"

Ran Yan glanced at the content on the paper, knowing that Ge Lan was currently just puzzled and guessing. Having been very close to the previous Ran Yan, if the conjectures grew deeper over time, they would definitely become more profound.

"Yes, I have suffered a lot, and I was even bedridden with illness in June this year," Ran Yan said slowly, her calm gaze meeting Ge Lan’s, "Do you believe in the existence of souls?"

Ge Lan’s expression froze, her already pale face turning deathly white in an instant as she stared at Ran Yan in disbelief, as if trying to see into her soul through those tranquil eyes.

As if identifying something after a long scrutiny, Ge Lan’s hand shook as she hurriedly spread out a sheet of paper and wrote: "Is she gone?"

Ran Yan watched as Ge Lan tremblingly wrote down those three words, and she inwardly sighed. With just a couple of ambiguous sentences, Ge Lan had guessed the harsh truth, proving to be even more intelligent than Ran Yan had thought. By having this frank conversation, Ran Yan realized she had bet correctly, at least in part.

"Yes, she died in early June. And I was reborn in this body." When Ran Yan spoke these words, she suddenly felt relieved, perhaps because she had died once before and now simply sought peace of mind, caring less about the outcome.

Ge Lan’s hand, holding the brush, froze mid-air; a drop of ink that had gathered at the tip fell onto the paper, spreading into a black flower. Following that, one drop after another splashed onto the paper, and Ge Lan’s hoarse voice broke the quiet of the rainy night, sounding particularly harsh.

Ran Yan watched her frail body curl up, burying her face in her legs, her shoulders shaking non-stop, seeming utterly heartbroken.

It was understandable. Aside from deep-seated emotions, she had sacrificed her life to save that Ran Yan. Just as she was grateful for her narrow escape and the prospect of seeing her wife again, she discovered that all the suffering endured for two years had been in vain, as that person was already dead!

The immense joy turning into sorrow in an instant—how could she not cry? Ran Yan felt heartless, but she believed in cutting the Gordian knot, that it was better to face pain sooner rather than dragging it out. Revealing this now might be good or bad for Ge Lan, and similarly, for herself, it was just her usual way of handling things.
