Chapter 134: Chapter 85: The Mysterious Autopsy

Su Fu felt a bit embarrassed by Ran Yan’s direct gaze, but fortunately, his resolve was steadfast, and he regained his composure in an instant. However, regarding Ran Yan’s request, he truly did not know how to respond. Should he agree, would he really have to strip naked for her inspection afterward?

After a long silence, just when Ran Yan thought he had given up, she heard that cool voice say, "Alright."

Ran Yan looked at him in surprise. She did not understand Su Fu, but he did not seem like a man without pride. Could it be that the corpse they were to examine was particularly tricky, to make him agree to such a request?

"I would like to inquire about something. May I ask if Mr. Su can resolve my doubt?" Ran Yan suddenly thought of something.

Su Fu’s eyebrows knitted slightly. "What is it?"

Ran Yan still remembered the situation in East Market when they took shelter from the rain, "Since Mr. Su is the future husband of a certain household’s wife, won’t I be causing any trouble by seeing you bare and naked before me?"

Su Fu asked coldly in return, "That day, the servant said: ’Pharmacist Su is the future husband favored by my family’s wife.’ Is that so?"

Ran Yan felt a blockage in her heart. Such an obvious meaning, yet she was misled by the term "future husband." What did it matter if his family’s wife favored him? If all the wives in Suzhou City fancied him, should they all be accounted to him?

"I’ll go get the tools," Ran Yan decisively answered, turning back to walk to the courtyard.

Although her request had been more in jest, since the other party had agreed, Ran Yan could not go back on her word. Not to mention she could not bring herself to do such a thing, even if she were to renege, she could not do it in front of a dangerous person like Su Fu. All she could do was to enhance her wellbeing within the bounds of not angering him.

Ran Yan returned to her bedroom and quickly found a simple narrow-sleeved garment to put on, tied her hair up into a ponytail at the top of her head, picked up her toolbox, and headed back to the orchard.

Su Fu had actually returned even faster. Unseen, he had put on a narrow-sleeved round-necked black garment and covered his face with a black cloth, leaving only a pair of cold and serene eyes visible. When he looked at someone, he resembled a leopard lying in wait for its prey, completely different from his slightly cold and leisurely demeanor before.

Su Fu nodded slightly at her, "Excuse me." As his chilly voice sounded, his hands were already circling Ran Yan’s waist. With a tip of his toes, he soared out like a hawk.

Ran Yan could only feel the wind whistling past her ears, the scenery on both sides blurring as it rapidly receded behind her. After dozens of rises and falls, the environment around them had completely changed. On the flat ground, there were few trees, only waist-high grassland, with occasional, gently rolling mounds.

Such an environment made Ran Yan feel somewhat nervous, and she couldn’t help but reflect on her own impulsiveness. What if, after examining the corpse, Su Fu suddenly decided to silence her, murder her on the spot, and discard her body in the wilderness?

After what felt like half a teacup of time under the moon, Ran Yan saw lights nearby. The lights were dense, shining as bright as daylight, yet there were clearly no villages or farms on this desolate plain!

When they were about a hundred yards away from the fire, Su Fu stopped, set Ran Yan down, and took out a mask to hand to her, "Put this on. Later, you mustn’t speak; just perform the examination according to my instructions. After the examination, write on the paper they have prepared... It would be best if you could change your handwriting."

With the mask on, Ran Yan felt a thrill. She typically performed simple examinations on-site, with in-depth autopsies and careful inspections mostly conducted on an operating table or in a pathology lab. Sometimes, she would have to perform an examination under harsh conditions, but this was her first time experiencing such a mysterious investigation—it was like knights of the greenwood gathering in the deep of night.

The mask prepared by Su Fu covered the whole head, exposing only the eyes, with wide ribbons hanging down to the waist, long enough to cover her hair when draped behind.

After making preparations, Su Fu helped Ran Yan pick up the toolbox and led the way, guiding her toward the fire.

When the distance was still about ten yards away, Ran Yan finally saw the scene by the fire clearly. Four men in black were kneeling around the fire, dressed very similarly to Su Fu, except their statures varied slightly. Next to the four of them stood a pitch-black coffin. In front of the coffin was a seat, on which incense and candles were set up, along with a blank sheet of paper held down at each end by paperweights, and a writing brush rested on an inkstone.

The four men seemed to have already noticed their arrival. When they were less than two yards away, they all stood up and saluted Su Fu with a fist clench.

"Is this the person?" one rough-voiced man slightly sized up Ran Yan before asking.

Ran Yan was petite and dressed in a round-neck, narrow-sleeved shirt. Many forensic doctors were short men with poor physiques, so the men did not doubt Ran Yan’s gender.

"Yes, let’s examine the corpse now," said Su Fu.

Among the four, three of them turned to look at a man in black of a size similar to Su Fu. That man looked at Ran Yan indifferently and nodded slightly. The other three hurriedly stepped forward and moved the lid of the coffin.

Ran Yan only approached the coffin after receiving a gesture from Su Fu. The first thing she noticed was not the body but the fine nanmu wood of the coffin, the lid, and walls made of whole pieces without a trace of connection; surely, the bottom was the same.

Someone snapped their fingers from behind, and the surrounding bushes rustled as over ten black-clothed, masked men emerged.

It was the same rough-voiced Han who said, "Light the torch for illumination."

"Yes!"

All of them responded in unison, lighting their torches from the fire before standing around the coffin.

Over ten blazing torches lit up the scene as bright as day. Although there were some troubling shadows, it was still barely possible to examine the body.

"The more detailed the examination result, the better, mainly to check if she was pregnant and the cause of death," Su Fu instructed.

Out of the corner of her eye, Ran Yan glanced at the blank paper on the seat and thought that if the details needed to be thorough, not only would that one sheet not suffice, but ten more wouldn’t be enough either.

The leader seemed to be very observant, noticing Ran Yan’s gaze. He whispered a few words to the man in black beside him, and soon, a thick stack of paper was added.

Ran Yan was slightly startled in her heart, hastily refocusing and becoming even more cautious in her actions, lest that person discern anything.

The soft tissues of the flesh and muscles on the corpse in the coffin had already completely disappeared, and there was slight weathering, indicating that this person had been buried for at least ten years. Moreover, the inside of the coffin was very clean and carried a faint scent of wood, showing that it had been recently made to house these bones.

The pelvic bone of the skeleton was low and wide, clearly that of a female. However, because the burial had been so long and some weathering had occurred, it was relatively difficult to find more useful information.

Ran Yan first conducted a general examination of the skeleton and found that a toe was missing from the left foot of the female corpse. Other than that, the rest of the parts were well preserved.
