Chapter 110: Chapter 69: Worship Buddha and Purify the Body

"True, it’s just that life after returning to the mansion won’t be easy, but don’t worry, with Shilang here, as long as the family elders don’t punish you by making you kneel in our ancestral hall, everything else can be blocked for you," Yunsheng comforted.

Ran Yan nodded, "Thank you, Shilang."

The two talked for a while longer, and then Yunsheng got up to return to the mansion to see the family’s reaction.

Today, Ran Yan planned to go to Cai Xiu Hall. The issue of syphilis had been dragging on for a long time, and they hadn’t sought her out, probably controlling it well with traditional medicine. For someone like Yan Niang with a mild condition, there might be a possibility of cure, but Zi Xu probably still needed penicillin.

After Ran Yan changed her clothes, she was about to have breakfast when the maid reported that Lady Eighteen had arrived.

Ran Yan sneered, really unable to wait! It just so happened that she hadn’t had breakfast yet, so she ordered the meal to be brought to the main hall, eating while waiting for Ran Meiyu to enter.

From the front gates to Ran Yan’s courtyard took at most half the time it takes to drink a cup of tea. Ran Meiyu seemed to be in a very good mood, leading several maids on a leisurely stroll into the hall.

Ran Yan glanced at her casually, noticing that she was accompanied by two other elaborately dressed women, both around fifteen or sixteen years of age. After thinking for a moment, Ran Yan recognized the one in the miserable green skirt as Lady Fourteen, Ran Qian, and the one in pale white was Lady Fifteen, Ran Meixi.

From Lady Fourteen to Lady Eighteen, all were about the same age, especially Lady Sixteen, who was born on the exact same day as Ran Yan, so their ranks in the family were squeezed together,

Lady Fourteen, the legitimate daughter of the third branch, had a haughty look just like Ran Meiyu, truly birds of a feather. Lady Fifteen, a concubine daughter from the same branch, wore a plain pale white skirt with just two simple hairpins in her updo, her eyes downcast, maintaining a demeanor that was neither cold nor warm, impassive like a block of wood.

Ran Meiyu entered the hall with a look of disdain, seeing Ran Yan eating by herself without any intent to greet her stirred discontent in her heart. Her eyes scanned over Ran Yan’s meal, and she sneered, "I suppose this breakfast is yet another purchase by Yunsheng! I don’t know how you cling to him these days, milking him for all sorts of benefits!"

The news of Yunsheng taking Ran Yan on a massive shopping spree at the East Market had already spread throughout the estate. Although Yunsheng also gave gifts to each sibling, it was merely out of courtesy; they never thought that the usually gentle and courteous Yunsheng could splash money around like a prodigal son.

Ran Yan gave her a cool glance and continued to eat.

Ran Meiyu and Ran Qian directly took their seats on the mats, Ran Meixi dullly followed suit.

An awkward atmosphere filled the hall, with Ran Meiyu feeling the most embarrassed. She kept talking half the time, but Ran Yan did not respond even once.

"Seventeen, how can you be so rude? We kindly came to visit you, and you don’t even bother to stand up!" Ran Qian couldn’t stand it anymore. As she was with Ran Meiyu, disparaging Ran Meiyu was indirectly disparaging her as well.

After finishing her meal, Ran Yan took the handkerchief handed by little Man to wipe her mouth carefully and rinsed it before finally sitting upright, saying, "You all come bright and early with such enthusiasm; do you have some bad news to tell me? You can speak now."

"You!" Ran Meiyu slammed the table and stood up abruptly, but recalling the cold, indifferent expression Ran Yan wore that day at the Yin residence when she instantly subdued her, she somewhat cowered and turned to Ran Qian instead, "See, Sister Fourteen, I told you she bullies me, and you didn’t believe it. Now you see she doesn’t even regard you."

Ran Yan looked Ran Qian up and down, dressed in a miserable green skirt, with ordinary features, not even as pretty as Ran Meixi, and certainly not comparable to Ran Meiyu.

"So it’s Sister Fourteen. Meiyu has grown into a beauty, increasingly captivating; it’s no wonder I didn’t notice Sister Fourteen at first. I truly have been negligent," Ran Yan said with a twisted smile.

Ran Qian, being a legitimate daughter, had a powerful maternal family which gave her much influence in the clan. Unfortunately, her plain appearance was always a sore point for her. Seeing Ran Yan, even more beautiful than Ran Meiyu, had already filled her with envy intense enough to mar that pretty face; now her face could barely hold the facade.

"Sister Fourteen, don’t listen to her trying to stir trouble," Ran Meiyu stared fiercely at Ran Yan.

Ran Yan’s smile remained faint as she picked up her tea and took a gentle sip, then turned her head and asked, "Why hasn’t tea been served to Lady Fourteen and Lady Fifteen?"
