Chapter 516: Chapter 516 Memory(2)_1
In the days that followed, she watched the little child slowly grow up, learn to speak, learn to walk, learn to let go of her hand and walk alone. With him, she was no longer lonely, taking him to see the world she had created. One day, he lay in her arms and said, "Why is it always just the two of us? I want someone to play with me."
She too felt lonely, and so she used her spiritual power to create four more beings, three male and one female. Because they lacked her blood, they were of a much lower grade than him.
Now that there were five of them, it became difficult to tell them apart. So, she gave each of them a name: Hen Xi, Mang Qianjun, Rong Xiu, and Yong Xing. The child who had grown up, now with thoughts of his own, named himself Zi Xiao.
Later, she created many more humans using other materials, men and women, and placed them around the world. Then she created many spiritual beasts. The spiritual beasts had a rapid breeding rate and often set off huge wars. Back then, humans did not know how to cultivate, and countless of the humans she had painstakingly created perished in the wars caused by the spiritual beasts. In order to maintain world stability and peace, she created the Vermilion Bird, Azure Dragon, White Tiger, and Dark Tortoise. Then she created humans capable of cultivation, and once they grew up, they could fight against the spiritual beasts, and the world finally settled down.
She had expended so much effort in creating this world that, before she knew it, Zi Xiao, Rong Xiu, and the others had grown up quite a bit. One day, Zi Xiao, who appeared to be around ten years old, ran up to her and asked, "Why do the people you create die?"
"Because their lifespans come to an end," she tenderly said, looking at Zi Xiao, the first human being she had created.
Zi Xiao looked at his still short stature and asked, "Why are we four still so small?"
"You were created with my spiritual power, so your growth is much slower," she touched his head and replied.
"Will we grow up?" he looked up at her.
"You will," she affirmed.
"Then will we die like they do?"
"..."
She fell silent, and the clever child spotted the answer immediately, tears as big as beans uncontrollably falling from his eyes.
"Why are you crying?" she gently wiped the tears from Zi Xiao’s face.
"You will live forever, but I will die," Zi Xiao said, crying.
"Life and death are normal," she consoled him.
"I don’t want that, I want to live a long time like you," Zi Xiao cried even harder.
Seeing Zi Xiao’s tear-streaked face, she said helplessly, "Then shall I create a method for retaining the soul after death and reconstructing the body for you?"
"Yes." Zi Xiao finally lifted his face and smiled, his youthful face already showing signs of breathtaking beauty.
So, she created a secret technique for soul retention and body reconstruction after death and taught it to all five of them. Zi Xiao and Mang Qianjun were highly talented and quickly mastered the technique. After a while, Rong Xiu and Yong Xing also got the hang of it, leaving only Hen Xi, who still hadn’t learned it because he was always playing.
Hen Xi, being the only girl among the five, was deeply beloved by everyone. Her personality was lively, and she loved to run around everywhere. Possessing great talent, she however did not like to cultivate, and her spiritual power was the weakest among them by far. But because of her special identity, no one dared to bully her; instead, it was often she who bullied others quite miserably. She did not take this secret method to heart and, seeing everyone’s questioning looks, she smiled sweetly and said, "Isn’t it better to just go with the flow? I don’t want to live forever like that, it’s so tiring!"
As the scene in her mind continued to change, Dugu Qianye watched the world transform, observed the Creator God creating methods like alchemy, artifact refining, beast taming, etc., and granting them to the mortals; witnessed her spending a long time and much effort refining the ten great divine artifacts; watched the world change dramatically, as Zi Xiao and the others grew up to adulthood.
One day, she lay under a peach tree, and the stunningly beautiful Zi Xiao came to lie beside her and said, "You created this world, you watch the people in it be born and die, do you still feel lonely and bored?"
The Creator God pointed in the air, and petals fluttered down, dancing mid-air, a beautiful sight to behold. She caught a petal and said, "Life and death are merely the cycle of the world, just like these petals, blooming and bearing fruit, then blossoming and fruiting again, in an endless loop. Watching other people’s stories, I still feel a sense of emptiness. However, seeing you all grow up fills me with satisfaction."
"Have you never wondered why you feel emptiness inside?" Zi Xiao asked.
The Creator God shook her head and said, "I don’t think about it. Even if I came up with an answer, I would only feel more empty inside. If I couldn’t find an answer, I would surely feel even worse; better to let things take their natural course. Hen Xi is right, going with the flow is best."
Zi Xiao did not pursue the topic further and, looking at a couple passing by in the distance, asked, "Why did you create humans as male and female when you created them? Why allow them to marry and reproduce?"
"..." The Creator God fell silent; she did not know why either, perhaps because she had created heaven and earth, she felt these beings should also be like heaven and earth to be balanced. Indeed, many things she had created had male and female, yin and yang, and only then could the species of the world prosper and multiply.
"When I grow up, I will marry you," Zi Xiao said after a while.
The Creator God turned to look at Zi Xiao’s devilishly handsome face and asked, "Why?"
"You don’t know what you are seeking, and I don’t know why humans must become husband and wife; perhaps if we were together, we would both understand," said Zi Xiao, then turned to gaze at her and asked, "What do you think?"
The Creator God looked at the still-floating peach blossom rain and said, "Good."
She did not take Zi Xiao’s words to heart and had never thought that one day the children around her would leave her one by one.
"I am tired," Mang Qianjun said one day as he came to her side.
"What are you tired of?" she asked.
"I am tired of this eternal youth, tired of an endless life, tired of having only us few in our lives," Mang Qianjun said, "I have been pursuing cultivation all my life, but now, I’ve realized I missed out on a lot. I want to be reborn once, to experience life anew."
The Creator God looked into his earnest eyes and said, "Good."
So, Mang Qianjun left. On a night known to no one, he dispersed all his spiritual power and left behind a body as a vessel for his eventual return.
The Creator God preserved his body and sometimes found herself staring at it, wondering where he was now, what kind of life he was leading, and if he was experiencing the joys of life as he said he would?
After a few thousand years, she saw Mang Qianjun again. She recognized him at first glance, but he did not remember her. He bowed to her respectfully, addressing her as the Creator God.
