Chapter 348: Chapter 348: Flame Abyss(2)_1
Everyone present was startled by Feng Sanmei’s words. Wasn’t she very particular about propriety and such? Usually she set such strict family rules, and yet, now she disregarded the order of seniority, offering Dugu Qianye a seat below her. Was this useless person really so favored by her?
Seeing everyone’s expressions, Dugu Qianye said, "Great grandmother, we’ll just sit here." And with that, she and Zi Xiao took seats on the outermost chairs, while Dugu Qianlin climbed onto her lap.
When everyone heard her address Feng Sanmei as great grandmother, they were taken aback again. Feng Sanmei had always had people call her great-great-grandmother, never allowing such intimate address as ’great grandmother’ from others. Everyone felt a sudden sense of imbalance in their hearts.
Dugu Qianlin followed suit and called out, "Great grandmother, have you missed Little Qianlin? Little Qianlin has missed you a lot."
Hearing Dugu Qianlin’s words, Feng Sanmei smiled happily and said, "Great grandmother has missed you too, but it seems you prefer your Sister Qianye and don’t come to see great grandmother."
Dugu Qianlin was conflicted for a moment, but in the end, he said, "Great grandmother, I’ll sit with Sister Qianye."
Feng Sanmei did not take offense at this and, after sipping some tea, said, "Now that you have all returned, let’s have a small reunion. Qianye has been back for a while, and I believe some of you have heard about it. Now, get to know each other. Qianye, these are your grandparents." Feng Sanmei pointed to the people seated below her.
Dugu Qianye looked over and saw that her grandfather, Dugu Chenyuan, looked a lot like Dugu Yunheng, especially the domineering light that shone from his eyes. Her grandmother, Xie Bing, seemed somewhat cold, but was fairly polite to her, offering her a small smile. Rising, Dugu Qianye bowed to both of them and called, "Grandfather, grandmother."
"Mm," Dugu Chenyuan simply grunted and said no more. Xie Bing gestured faintly and said, "Please, rise."
"Thank you, grandmother," Dugu Qianye said, standing up.
"These are your second grandfather and second grandmother," Feng Sanmei pointed to two more people. Dugu Qianye once again paid her respects to them, and then Feng Sanmei continued to introduce her to others. The recognition process took half an hour.
Dugu Chenyuan had four brothers, one of whom had passed away early; three remained. Their combined offspring totaled some twenty or thirty, and with those married off, Dugu Qianye could barely keep track of them all. Then there was her own generation, with countless brothers and sisters—just in the hall, there were fifty or sixty, plus the elders, filling the hall with well over a hundred people. But only Dugu Qianlin was younger than her.
Among this crowd, there were those who looked down on her and those who were kinder to her. She didn’t pay much attention to those she didn’t know well.
Dugu Qianlan’s heart melted at the sight of Zi Xiao, and she couldn’t help but keep glancing at him. Her mother, who was also Dugu Qianye’s second aunt by the name of Nalan Feiyu, noticed her daughter’s infatuation and frowned. Following her daughter’s gaze, she saw Zi Xiao, who had come in with Dugu Qianye.
"Who did he say he is? How can he be allowed in the Dugu Family’s main hall?" Nalan Feiyu asked sharply as she looked at Zi Xiao.
All attention suddenly focused on Zi Xiao, with curiosity, astonishment, and disgust from the crowd.
Feng Sanmei looked at Zi Xiao and said, "He is Qianye’s fiancé, named Zi Xiao."
The fiancé of a useless person? How could such an outstanding man be engaged to a useless one? And since Feng Sanmei had allowed him here, it meant his status had been recognized!
"Fiancé? So young and already thinking of matters between men and women, what kind of decorum is this!" Nalan Feiyu scolded with the tone of an elder.
Hearing Nalan Feiyu’s words, Feng Sanmei’s face turned cold as she said, "I have approved of it. What, do you have an objection?"
Everyone could sense the displeasure in Feng Sanmei’s words, and Nalan Feiyu hurriedly explained, "Grandmother, you misunderstand, I was just concerned that Qianye is too young and doesn’t understand these matters, afraid that she might be deceived. After all, she can’t cultivate, and if she loses her innocence, it would be problematic for her to marry in the future!"
As soon as Nalan Feiyu spoke, the hall became so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Although cultivators didn’t value chastity as much, discussing Dugu Qianye’s body in front of so many people was a blatant insult! And she even mentioned the fact that everyone avoided—calling her a waste!
Feng Sanmei was instantly infuriated, and with a flick of her hand, she tossed the teacup in front of her, shouting, "How dare you!"
Only then did Nalan Feiyu realize what she had said; she was just jealous that such a ’waste’ could find such an excellent fiancé, while her own outstanding daughter went unnoticed. Her words had slipped out without going through her brain. Now, seeing Feng Sanmei so angry, she was too scared to say another word.
"Grandmother, I didn’t mean it that way, I was just considering Qianye," Nalan Feiyu said as she immediately knelt down to explain.
"Enough!" Feng Sanmei, angered, slammed the table and said, "The granddaughter I acknowledged doesn’t need your lessons. You know full well what’s in your heart. Don’t think that just because I’m old, I can’t hear the true meaning in your words!"
Dugu Yihong quickly knelt beside Nalan Feiyu and said, "Grandmother, please don’t be angry, Feiyu didn’t mean anything else."
"If she meant nothing else by her words, should she speak like that? If she had meant something else, would she have wished for Qianye’s death?" retorted Feng Sanmei, angrily.
"Great-grandma, my mother didn’t..." Dugu Qianlan also knelt down, cursing Dugu Qianye relentlessly in her heart.
"How presumptuous! Did I allow you to call me great-grandma?" Feng Sanmei rebuked.
"But isn’t that what Sister Qianye calls you?" Dugu Qianlan didn’t understand why even the title brought criticism.
"That’s because I permitted her to!" The implication was that Dugu Qianlan didn’t have that privilege!
When Nalan Feiyu and Dugu Qianlan heard Feng Sanmei’s words, they were so angry they gritted their teeth. The favoritism was all too clear!
"Great-grandma, please don’t be upset. Perhaps aunt truly had my best interests at heart. Thinking that I can’t cultivate, she didn’t discriminate against me but instead cared about my lifelong matters, considering my wellbeing. As for those words, please think of them in the best light. Getting angry is bad for your health and not worth it," Dugu Qianye said as she watched the drama unfold before her.
She didn’t like her second uncle’s family, but she also couldn’t let them be too humiliated. Otherwise, everyone in the family would see her as arrogant and spoiled, which could create many enemies for no reason.
"Yeah, great-grandma, don’t be angry. If you get angry, Little Qianlin will feel sad," Dugu Qianlin added, picking up on Dugu Qianye’s cue.
Hearing what Dugu Qianye and Dugu Qianlin said, Feng Sanmei stated, "Even if it was unintentional, as a wife of the Dugu Family, saying such words must be punished. Considering that Qianye has pleaded for you, I’ll penalize you by grounding you for three months and withholding three months’ salary."
"Thank you, grandmother," Nalan Feiyu quickly expressed her gratitude. Three months would pass quickly for someone who cultivated, and she certainly didn’t lack for such a small amount.
"All right, everyone go back. I don’t want to start my day with such a disturbance," Feng Sanmei said. "Qianye and Zi Xiao stay, everyone else can return to their own affairs."
