Chapter 291: Chapter 291: After Drinking (5)_1
Acting on her decision, Dugu Qianye arranged for everyone to gather at the plaza because it was a collective celebration. The execution pyre had been taken apart, and over a hundred tables were set up, laden with sumptuous food and drink by evening.
"Miss, on behalf of our tribe, I thank you! I toast you with this bowl," said Wuchangxin, approaching Dugu Qianye with a brimming bowl.
Everyone was brimming with joy, and Dugu Qianye was no exception, swept up in the cheerful atmosphere and laughed heartily, "Good, cheers!"
After Wuchangxin left, Wumeng, Wuyan’s mother, came up to Dugu Qianye and said, "Thank you, miss, for saving Yan and everyone! This bowl is for you."
"Auntie, you’re too kind. I’ll drink first as a sign of respect!" Dugu Qianye finished speaking and downed the freshly filled wine in her bowl.
As soon as Dugu Qianye put down her bowl, someone filled it for her again. She reached for it, but Zi Xiao stopped her, saying, "Drink less."
"Hehe, it’s fine, today I’m happy!" Dugu Qianye replied and started drinking again with Wuyan, who had come up to offer a toast.
Sitting not far away, Wumeng said, "This wine doesn’t seem like much now, but it’ll hit you later. You should really drink less, Miss."
Dugu Qianye drank a few more bowls, until Zi Xiao wouldn’t let her continue. Instead, she took out the fruit wine from her Refining Demon Pot and shared it with everyone, saying, "Then, I can drink this, right?" She then told the others, "This is the Spiritual Wine brewed by my Beast, come on, everyone give it a try."
Dugu Qianye distributed a jug to each table. Dudu had been worried that there was too much wine with no takers, but upon hearing that Dugu Qianye would be sharing the wine, he promptly provided ample amounts, enough for two jugs per table.
Zi Xiao was quite familiar with this wine, having been swindled out of a good deal of money because of it back in the Cangqiong Empire. He hadn’t expected that it was brewed by her Contract Beast. But since the wine wasn’t intoxicating, he let her drink freely.
They drank late into the night, and even Zi Xiao couldn’t hold out any longer, having consumed his fair share. He had fended off quite a few drinks for Dugu Qianye earlier, and after being coerced into drinking a good amount of Spiritual Wine, he was feeling a bit tipsy.
"Alright, everyone head home and tidy up. Tomorrow, I’ll take you all to a new place! You won’t have to hole up here anymore. Time to disperse," Dugu Qianye waved to everyone and announced.
People began to head home in small groups. Dugu Qianye and Zi Xiao’s courtyard had been prepared in the afternoon—an independent small yard that no one had lived in before, cleaned up just for them.
Wuyan and Wumeng supported the drunken Wuchangxin as they left, while the rest staggered home; Dugu Qianye declined any offers to be escorted, telling them to rest up on their own, and she walked back with Zi Xiao. Beneath the full moon, their two figures slowly proceeded, casting long shadows on the ground.
"You’ve been planning to win them over from the start, haven’t you?" Zi Xiao said.
"Hehe, that’s right," Dugu Qianye chuckled and replied, "I thought it would take some effort, but it turned out to be surprisingly smooth."
"Are you planning to take all of them with you?" Zi Xiao asked, supporting Dugu Qianye, whose steps were a little unsteady.
"Of course! A big reason I took them in was for their strength. It’d be a loss not to bring them along!"
"But how will you manage with so many people?"
"Hehe, you’ll find out tomorrow, umm..."
She had already drunk quite a bit, and the cold wind made Dugu Qianye’s tongue feel like it was spinning, her footing becoming unstable. As she reached the door, which was a bit elevated, she stumbled, plunging forward.
Zi Xiao, with quick reflexes, pulled her arm back and wrapped his other arm around her to catch her.
"Be careful."
Dugu Qianye, feeling even dizzier after the jolt, looked up only to see Zi Xiao’s smooth chin, and his lips, reddened from the alcohol. She propped herself on his chest, gazing at his face, and after a pause, she blurted out, "You’re so devilishly handsome!"
"Is that good enough to be your husband?" Zi Xiao caressed her delicate face, his voice laden with charm.
"Hmm, do you like me?" Dugu Qianye asked.
"I do," Zi Xiao replied.
"Why do you like me?"
Zi Xiao, looking at the bewildered Dugu Qianye, said, "The first time I saw you, you were playing the flute in the forest. The sound of your flute, the peace about you, it suddenly made my heart feel the warmth of home, the sense of belonging I’ve always sought. Later, your flamboyance, your personality, your decisiveness in killing, all made me like you more and more. Little Yeye, you’ve enchanted me."
The next day, Dugu Qianye awoke quite late. She felt a headache coming on and was a bit woozy, reaching out instinctively to rub her temples.
What was she holding? Dugu Qianye abruptly opened her eyes and found herself staring at a man’s clothed chest, cough. Her head was resting on an arm with another draped over her shoulders. Her own hand wrapped around his waist, and one of her legs draped over his!
What was going on here?
"Morning!" Zi Xiao’s voice came from above her head.
