Miho the Killer -
Chapter 64: Driving Away
Chapter 64: Driving Away
I couldn’t shake off the suspicion that Shin had a hand in the sudden attack on Miho. At the least, he knew what was coming and chose to not do anything about it. How and why else would he have been in the room already waiting for it to all happen? And just sitting there in the dark, watching as if it didn’t concern him at all?
At the same time, by choice or by virtue of not having a weapon herself, I was glad that Miho managed to not kill any of the attackers. Nevertheless, it was clear that we could no longer stay at the hospital now that it seemed clear her whereabouts were known to whoever was after her - for whatever reason.
Shin took the lead and left the room first, and before I even realized that there were any further danger, he landed a sharp chop on the throat of a man who was standing on the left side of the door and kicked the kneecap of another man on the right with all his might. While the left one fell without being able to scream, the right one collapsed screaming in great pain.
This alerted the nurses on the floor and a few of them came to check, to whom Shin nonchalantly spoke.
"Patient Jin Miho will be leaving now."
Leaving the confused ladies behind, Miho and I quietly followed the old man hiding - for no particular reason - behind him. She held my hand tightly like a mother who worried that her child would get lost in a crowded place.
As soon as we got into Shin’s car and drove out of the hospital, Shin instructed me.
"Call Detective Choi now."
"Excuse me?"
"Call him now and tell him that you and Miho have been attacked by strangers and Shin is moving you to a safer place."
"Why would you want to tell him that?"
"Just do it, and tell him that I will drop by the station later. At some point."
I couldn’t read his mind at all. First I was suspicious that this tricky old man - for whatever reason I can’t understand - put us in the situation we were in. And I thought the last thing we wanted was any form of police attention. But now he was asking me to contact Detective Choi?
"DO IT NOW!"
Shin yelled at my indecision but Miho quickly came to my defense.
"Don’t yell at Sohee!"
"Tsk!" That was all he could say.
"Sohee, just do it now. Uncle knows the best" Miho leaned forward from her backseat to tell me, sitting in the passenger seat.
Still confused, nevertheless deciding to trust Miho - if not the old man, I took out my phone and dialed the Detective.
He picked it up very quickly, only after two rings.
"Ms. Han? Everything OK?"
He must have sensed that me calling him at this hour must be something unusual.
"Yes, Detective. But Miho and I have been attacked by some... strangers at the hospital."
"What happened?!"
"Mr. Shin is taking us to somewhere safe. I think. He says he will drop by at the police station at some point."
"I’ll be on my way right away! Keep in touch!"
The Detective hung up and Shin started to speed away from the hospital, faster than how he normally drives.
"Can I borrow your phone too?"
The old man asked me and without suspecting anything, I just handed my phone over - then regretted immediately as he opened the driver’s side window and threw it away.
"HEY!!!"
"You are coming with us now. It’s decided."
"I never said-"
"You stayed. That was your choice. I advised you to leave. You didn’t. Your choice."
I groaned but I knew he was right.
"Where are we going, Uncle?"
Miho asked from the backseat with a hint of excitement in her voice.
"Somewhere safe."
"Is it the place... wait... what was the name - the place with the pretty garden."
That rang a bell.
"Lily Garden? Seriously?" I asked.
"Oh, yeah! That’s the place! Have you been there too?" Miho couldn’t hide the enthusiasm.
"Yes." How could I forget that night?
"That’s so cool!"
"Sorry, Miho. We are going there but we won’t be staying there." Shin killed the fun.
"Aw..." Little kid. Disappointed.
"But we will drop by there. It’s our stopover."
"Where are we going after that?" I had a bad feeling.
"The Studio."
That instantly made my stomach turn and I opened the window to throw up. At least it wasn’t inside the car.
"God damn it! What the hell is wrong with you?!" Shin shouted.
"Hey! Be nice to Sohee. Are you OK?"
It was like being stuck between a kind mother and a mean father.
"Tsk" It seemed Shin wasn’t so good at opposing Miho either after all.
"Children, please keep quiet." the grumpy Dad ordered instead.
After that, we drove for about an hour and a half in silence on the External Ring Highway as Yangpyeong was in the South East of Seoul while Mokdong was in the North West. It was a better choice than driving through the city.
Once we arrived at Lily Garden, the reception lady I saw on my previous visit opened the gate, greeting us with a friendly smile. I noticed that the place still seemed empty with no guests, and also realized that there was a driveway that I failed to notice last time which led to an underground garage.
My heart was already beating so fast and stomach filled with the dread that I would be going to the Studio again.
Shin parked the car in the dimly lit garage and spoke tersely.
"Get out."
I got out hesitantly. Miho popped out of the car like a kid heading to an amusement park.
"Are we... really going to the Studio?"
I asked.
"Don’t be silly. We are just changing cars. I was joking."
"THAT WASN’T FUNNY AT ALL!" I protested, Shin shrugged, Miho laughed, and we moved into another car that was parked in the garage.
Just what will become of us now...?
