Chapter 50: Punishment (Warning: Gore)

It took a while for Kwon to gain full awareness of his surroundings after getting abruptly snapped out of a blissful unconscious state courtesy of boiling water on his wound.

He looked around with an animal instinct, searching for survival against impossible odds, probably forgetting that he was fixed on the cross until the pain registered again.

Then the inevitable happened.

"Ms.... Ms. Han?!!"

My heart stopped instantly and I felt every hair on my body stand up. Shivers ran down my spine as our eyes met.

"Oh thank God! You are here! HELP ME! PLEASE! HELP ME!!!"

Theoretically, I could.

I could perhaps talk Shin out of it. Or even attack him in some ways for a dramatic rescue - although I probably didn’t stand any chance, but who knows... maybe a lucky hit on the right spot could put him to sleep and I could act as a hero who saved Kwon.

But my lips were saying something else.

"Why did you kill Minji?"

Then I saw the last glimmer of hope in his eyes slowly fade away. I think he might have already realized what put him in this predicament. Perhaps the questions that followed were just his desperate attempt to keep himself in denial because sometimes life - and death - was easier to live by turning a blind eye to the inevitable.

"You know... Minji?"

"Yes."

"How do you know her?"

"Minji was my friend. You had her killed right in front of me."

"FUCK!"

As soon as Kwon shouted, Shin landed a heavy punch on his stomach.

"Watch your language in front of a lady."

It looked like the crucified man wanted to apologize but words weren’t coming out very well from his drooling mouth.

"I’ll ask you again. Why did you kill Minji?"

"I... I’m so sorry... I didn’t mean to..."

That made me snap.

"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN YOU DIDN’T MEAN TO?! YOU CONTRACTED MIHO TO KILL HER!!!"

Kwon started to pant heavily.

"Shhhh. Breathe in.... Breathe out... Shhh... Breathe in... Breathe out..." Shin instructed Kwon in the most soothing voice I’ve ever heard from him, one that I wasn’t even aware he was capable of, and magically, Kwon listened to the instruction and calmed down.

"I have to do that because otherwise, he might hyperventilate" Shin explained.

Saving lives now, are we?

"You want to know who else I know? Suyoung is also my friend."

Seeing that Kwon wasn’t going to recover quickly enough to ask me questions that I would have been happy to answer, I took the initiative to talk some more. He looked at me now with growing despair in his eyes. Every dot was connecting in his mind now too, but the constellation he was seeing was a constellation of death.

"Actually I don’t even care why you had Minji killed. All I want you to know is that you will meet the same fate, shortly."

I don’t know what came over me, but I was growing bold and the thumping of my heart now wasn’t out of fear.

"You will die."

"PLEASE! MS.HAN! PLEASE!!! SPARE MY LIFE!!!"

"Sounds like the perfect reason why you should die now." Shin joked. Bad taste.

"I have... I have a wife and a kid. Please have mercy. If I die now, they will be left with no husband - no father!"

I knew this moment would come. But surprisingly, it didn’t make my heart waver. Instead, it fueled the fire in me.

"You will die."

"Oh no... please no... I’ve suffered enough. Please let me go..."

"Mr. Kwon," I called out his name. Politely.

"Yes?! Yes?! Tell me. Tell me anything you want me to do! I will do it!!"

"Aren’t you a man of faith?" I asked what I already knew.

"Yes! I am! I’m a good man! I’m a good Christian! Are you as well?!"

"Perhaps now is the time you make a sincere prayer."

"Yes! Yes! That’s right! Oh, dear Lord! Please save me. Please forgive me for any and all of my sins. I have wronged. I have committed sins. I have strayed far from the path of justice. I gave in to the temptations like a weak man. I’m a sinner! I confess! I have done things I shouldn’t have done. Please forgive my infidelity. Please forgive my obscene acts. I have been perverted. I have been led astray by the evil. I was blinded. Now I see the light!"

I was disgusted. I looked over at Shin and nodded my head. He went to the corner of the room where he had large white plastic containers. Perhaps a gallon each. He put them on a cart and started to wheel toward Kwon.

Kwon continued to pray.

"I dedicate my life to you, dear Lord! Please save me from this monstrosity. I will work hard. I will work day and night. I will pray every day. I will pray in my every waking moment. I will donate seventy-five percent of EVERYTHING I earn to the church. I will never, never ever do anything wrong again! I will stay away from tempting women. I will stay away from promiscuous girls. Dear my Lord! I’m just a lost lamb. Please have pity. Please show me mercy! Save me! Save me! Save me! Oh, dear Lord-"

"Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities-"

I started to recite what I had committed to my heart now. Kwon’s eyes went wide and he started to convulse all over his body, shaking his head frantically left and right, screaming and praying harder.

"I will NEVER, NEVER EVER do anything wrong EVERY AGAIN! My LORD-"

Shin opened the first container and splashed the acid on Kwon’s feet.

"AAAARRRGH!!! SAVE ME!!!!"

"-which likewise indulged in sexual immorality"

Shin this time splashed the liquid on Kwon’s body.

"I’ve done NOTHING WRONG! I’ve done NOTHING WRONG! Why is this happening to me?! My Lord!"

"-and pursued unnatural desire"

"NOTHING! NOTHING! I’m a VICTIM! SAVE ME!"
