Miho the Killer -
Chapter 36: My Body
Chapter 36: My Body
"No. I can’t do that"
Shin rejected once again.
"Why not?! You were prepared to make a deal with me before all this. Remember?"
"That deal never materialized. And I never took your money. There was no deal."
"Then I can give you the money now. 15 million Won advance payment. 200 million once I sort out the house."
I was ready to put everything I could possibly cash out. I was staying at Shin’s safe house in Paju anyway and I could probably move out of the flat in the city and get some deposit back. Break the savings account. Take out some loans. Sell whatever little coins and stocks I meddled with.
"Money is not the main issue here." Shin didn’t even bother looking at my way as we drove through the night back home.
"Then what is it?"
"You are asking to do a job on a former client. That is just not something we do."
"But he wasn’t your client!"
I was getting desperate.
"It doesn’t matter. If I’m going to take over Miho’s work - which I have to now, then he is as good as my former client."
"Just what will it take for you to do it? Name your price."
"There is no price for such a job. End of story."
"But-"
"Don’t push your luck, lady!" Shin burst out. Finally losing his patience.
I looked out of the window, and saw the eerie and sparse night landscape on the way to Paju where city lights were drifting further away behind us.
"He killed my friend."
I broke the silence again.
"Oh fucking well. And remember, it was Miho who killed her. "
"Her name was Minji."
"Don’t care. Don’t want to know."
"She didn’t deserve to die like that."
"She did. You know why? Because someone paid the price for it."
"Miho only did it for her brother!"
"You gotta get this into your head. What she does with the money she makes - and the same goes for me - has nothing to do with our work. The only thing that matters is we do the job we get paid to do. Understood?"
"You are a heartless, cruel, cruel monster." I spat out my words through gritted teeth.
"And Miho is not?"
"She’s not!"
"You don’t know her. Oh, boy. You really don’t know her."
"She... she... she didn’t want to do it."
"Yeah, yeah. Just think what you want. You don’t know Miho at all. I can tell you things she’s done that’s going to haunt you for your whole life."
"I’ve already seen Minji burn to death."
"Ha! As if that’s anything special."
I snapped and slapped Shin right in the face.
"What the hell are you doing?!!"
He yelled at me. But I did not stop. I started to jab his ear with all my might. One punch after another. I don’t think it hurt this battle-hardened man who had been through hell and back countless times, but it certainly did annoy him.
"For fuck’s sake! Stop this madness!"
I started to push and pull on his arm and as he was fighting off my assault from the passenger seat, despite his best effort, the car started to swerve a little.
"Right. That’s enough!"
The car screeched as Shin pulled over to the shoulder lane. As soon as the car stopped, I kicked the door open and ran out.
I didn’t know where I was going or what I was going to do, but seeing the man who got Miho to kill Minji, and Shin’s refusal to help, just made me feel so powerless. There was nothing I could do. Maybe it was me trying to take the blame off Miho and project it onto Kwon - my way of making it possible for me to accept Miho and bring her redemption. Maybe I could not bring myself to really hate Miho despite what she has done to Minji. I hated myself for it, but the only solution I could think of now was to kill Kwon the way he deserved to die. And I was simply not capable of doing that myself.
"Where are you running off to?!"
Shin ran after me as I weaved my way through the bushes toward nowhere.
And of course, in a cartoonishly clumsy manner as idiots like me do, I misstepped on something and fell to the ground. As I was wearing a dress, my knee scratched against a twig on the ground and started to bleed. The old man caught up with me in no time and looked down at me.
"Don’t you ever try to pull off such a stunt again. I don’t care you are Miho’s whatever. I can bury you right here and get Dr. Yang to come visit Miho regularly. Don’t push your luck, lady."
I was starting to tear up.
How pathetic.
Pathetic me.
"Please, Shin... please... is there anything I can do? I’ll give anything - everything."
"We are not having this discussion ever again. You make your choice now. Get buried here right now, or drop this topic for good."
My knee stung and felt painful as it kept on bleeding, but although I was too desperate to avenge Minji that it was not a big deal, Shin looked at my blood, let out a sigh, and asked me.
"What’s your type?"
"Type?"
"A? B? O?! What’s your type?!"
"I don’t know... may...maybe... Beta?"
"What the hell are you talking about?! Your blood type! God damn it! What’s your blood type?!"
"It’s O. My blood type is O. O-negative actually..."
Shin put his hands on his hips, looked up to the moon like a wolf, took a deep breath, and let out a sigh.
"I can’t believe it. You are one hell of a lucky lady."
I sat on the ground not understanding what was going on at all.
"There is one thing you can offer. I could just take it if I wanted, but Miho would never accept it."
"What do you mean...?"
"Your body."
"NO! Get away from me!!"
"Damn it! What do you think I am?! I meant your ’body’, stupid!"
What could he possibly mean now?
"Listen. You pledge now to donate any of your organs - including your heart - if Juho ever needs it."
It still didn’t make sense.
"Juho needs a transplant?"
"Not now. But he’s fragile. It can happen any time and it’s not something we can be prepared for in advance. You are as good as it gets now. A perfect match. Bravo. You are one hell of a lucky lady."
How does getting my organs held as collateral qualify me as lucky?
"Listen. Juho’s blood type is B-negative. It’s rare. About one percent of the world’s population. 0.5 percent in Korea. If he ever needs a transplant, he can only receive it from B-negative or O-negative. Other blood types can work, but his immunodeficiency puts him at very high risk. You are as good as it gets."
"So you want me to be like organ reserve for Juho?"
"Now you get it. In exchange, I will take the deal. I will do your job."
With that, Shin bent down and offered me his hand. Maybe I should have, but I didn’t think much. I just automatically reached out and took his rough, callous hand and he pulled me up back on my feet.
"A deal is a deal. I won’t back out, and you can never back out."
"But how do I trust you? You can always just kill me any time and take what you want."
"Miho won’t have it."
"You think she would if we had a deal?"
"Miho will accept anything that is under contract. That’s how it is."
My body was no longer mine.
But at least it wouldn’t go to waste.
