Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 87 - 87 86 Bomb Terror
87: Chapter 86: Bomb Terror 87: Chapter 86: Bomb Terror Gao Yang and Li Jinfang made their way to the window facing the street.
Gao Yang opened the night vision scope and swept a glance over the streets that were yet to be controlled.
Although he didn’t see any signs of thermal activity, the unsettling feeling inside Gao Yang’s heart remained very strong.
With the scope, Gao Yang thoroughly searched every observable area again, sparing neither the streets nor the buildings; then he quickly noticed several red figures appearing on the rooftop of a building about five hundred meters away from him.
There were five people gathered on the rooftop.
Even though Gao Yang had no idea what they were up to, he didn’t think several people would show up on a rooftop in the middle of the night out of sheer boredom.
Gao Yang handed his gun to Li Jinfang beside him and said with a puzzled tone, “Take a look at this, I have no idea what these people are up to.
They seem rather sneaky, but we’re so far away, it should be fine, right?”
After locating the figures Gao Yang mentioned with the night vision device, Li Jinfang spoke softly, “Hmm, can’t tell what they’re doing.
But, why do their movements look so familiar to me?
Sneaking around, acting suspicious, one person squatting still, four others on alert, that’s the drill, yeah, it’s quite similar to when I did reconnaissance filming or laser guidance in the army.”
Having said that casually, both he and Gao Yang were stunned.
Then they looked at each other with widened eyes and said in unison,
“Laser-guided bomb!”
After speaking, Gao Yang’s voice trembled as he said, “Damn it, these guys can’t really be doing laser targeting, can they?
Give me the gun, I remember this scope has a feature that allows you to see wavelengths of light invisible to the naked eye.
Let me check.”
Gao Yang found the switch on the gun scope and turned on an additional feature, but after another look, he found nothing new—still just the five red figures on the rooftop.
Gao Yang breathed a sigh of relief and said, “Good, no anomalies found, should be no problem.
I’ll keep an eye on them, see what they’re up to…
Wait a minute!
What’s this?
Damn!
A laser!”
Gao Yang couldn’t help but shout out loud.
His heart, which had just relaxed a bit, felt like it was being squeezed by a hand because he saw a fine beam of light coming straight at him from one of the people on the rooftop through the scope.
Following the beam’s path, Gao Yang saw the laser’s point of impact was not far from him, which meant the building they were in had been targeted for laser-guidance.
If nothing went wrong, they would soon be welcoming at least one laser-guided bomb.
Gao Yang bellowed, “Laser-guided bomb, bomb!
Run!”
Gao Yang’s first instinct was to run, but Li Jinfang immediately shouted, “Can’t run, there’s no time.
Find a way to take out the guy doing the targeting, destroy the laser emitter.
I’m going to call for help.”
Li Jinfang immediately turned and ran, screaming at the top of his lungs, “Laser-guided bomb, counterattack, take them out!”
Coleman’s men were in charge of nighttime security.
Li Jinfang had barely shouted a few times when someone yelled in English, “Who’s shouting, what’s happened?”
After hearing this, Li Jinfang immediately switched to English and yelled, “Bomb, laser-guided bomb, fight back.”
Li Jinfang had also learned English in the military; although his conversation still needed work, he could blurt out the military terms he knew.
After Li Jinfang finished yelling, chaos quickly ensued inside the entire building.
It was unclear who fired the first shot into the darkness, but soon nearly everyone was pressed against the windows firing off rounds wildly.
Although no one knew where the enemy was, they instinctively chose a direction and began blind firing.
Seeing that someone had started shooting, Gao Yang cursed and fired a shot as well.
However, he had not yet zeroed his night vision device, and while that wasn’t a big problem at close ranges, his shots missed the target at the distance he was firing.
Gao Yang was frantic, pulling the trigger over and over, but the operator of the laser emitter didn’t move an inch, and the laser beam still pointed at the building.
What Gao Yang was even more afraid of was the thought that after startling the enemy, what if they just dropped the laser emitter and ran?
Although Gao Yang didn’t know how a laser emitter was operated, he guessed it didn’t need continuous manual guidance.
What Gao Yang did know was that from the start of the laser emission to the time the bomb would arrive, it could be as long as four to five minutes or as short as several seconds depending on the aircraft’s bombing range and the type of laser-guided bomb.
About thirty seconds had already passed, and if the laser beam’s direction couldn’t be changed in time, he would be counting the rest of his life in seconds.
While Gao Yang was burning with anxiety, Glolov ran over with a machine gun.
Li Jinfang, with his AK47, began shooting toward the direction he remembered, and Cui Bo also took an AUG and followed Li Jinfang’s lead in a wild spray of bullets.
They only had one night vision device, and now they were relying on luck.
Glolov had no time to speak before he mounted his machine gun on the window sill and began to fire.
Only then did he shout loudly, “Guide the rounds!”
Gao Yang, as if waking from a dream, roared, “There are tracer rounds in the M2, let’s go there!”
Gao Yang could only speak as succinctly as possible, and Glolov still understood, dropping the machine gun in his hand and sprinting downstairs.
The problematic M2 heavy machine gun on the third floor had, after the building was taken, been moved to the other side of the building by Coleman’s people, and Gao Yang remembered that its belt was loaded with tracer bullets.
It took Gao Yang and Glolov less than ten seconds to run from the fourth floor to the third floor, and when he reached the M2 machine gun position on the third floor, the M2 had already started firing under the control of Coleman’s men.
Glolov reached the machine gun, yanked the shooter operating it, and roared, “Out of the way, let me do it.”
After pulling the machine gunner aside, Glolov immediately started firing with the M2, and Gao Yang swiftly turned his scope horizontally and held it in front of Glolov, yelling, “Do you see it?”
Glolov didn’t even glance at the machine gun but adjusted the trajectory through the aiming scope Gao Yang held up.
The M2’s ammunition was configured with one tracer bullet for every three regular bullets, clearly showing the ballistic trajectory at night.
Glolov fired a long burst and found the trajectory.
When he fired the second time, the 12.7mm bullets rained precisely toward the people operating the laser emitters on the rooftop.
The tracer bullets fired by Glolov made a clear ballistic indicator, and without needing anyone’s command, all the guns in the building adjusted to Glolov’s trajectory, firing simultaneously in a deluge.
Although most of the bullets were harmless by five hundred meters and had lost accuracy, at this point, it was all about guessing.
Coleman’s men were also in a panic, knowing that as soon as the laser-guided bomb fell, nobody in the building would have a chance to escape, so they weren’t thinking about conserving ammunition.
They had four RPG rocket launchers, and at this moment, nobody cared that you shouldn’t launch rockets inside a room.
Those with the launchers found a sufficiently large room and immediately fired the rockets toward the place Glolov indicated.
Four rockets were launched in succession, but only one hit the distant rooftop, and that’s when the M2 operated by Glolov stopped firing.
“Change ammo!”
Glolov’s finger, which had been on the trigger, never let go, and he quickly ran through the one hundred and ten bullets in the belt.
Glolov burned through two ammunition belts, and while those nearby scrambled to load a new belt, Glolov suddenly shouted, “The laser has shifted, keep firing, keep firing, don’t give them a chance to adjust!”
Only Glolov could see the situation on the rooftop; everyone else blindly followed his trajectory, firing away without knowing if they had taken out the people on the rooftop or hit the laser targeting them.
The most crucial concern was whether the fatal laser had been destroyed.
Hearing Glolov’s shout and knowing the lethal laser beam had deviated, everyone relaxed slightly, but now was not the time to let down their guard entirely.
If the laser beam returned before the bomb fell, they would still end up dead.
The belt was quickly replaced.
Glolov didn’t need to adjust the trajectory again.
He hadn’t moved the machine gun an inch while he stopped firing, so all he needed to do was resume shooting.
Seconds after Glolov’s machine gun roared back into action, a blinding flash of white light was followed by a deafening explosion.
About two seconds later, there was another intense blast.
The laser-guided bombs had finally fallen.
Compared to the power of two laser-guided bombs, the rockets that had terrified Gao Yang during the day were mere child’s play.
The laser-guided bombs had fallen on a building, about six or seven hundred meters from the one where Gao Yang and his men were located, on the right side of the same street, slightly larger than their hideout.
It was supposed to be the primary attack target of the Sandstorm Mercenary Corps tomorrow, but now, a guided bomb from an unknown country had done them a huge favor.
After the two explosions, the shooting in the building ceased.
Everyone was stunned by what they had just seen.
If they hadn’t noticed the laser targeting in time, not a single person in the building would have survived.
Glolov finally ceased firing and said distractedly, “I hit the guy targeting with the laser, he fell, but the laser didn’t move.
Then I don’t know why, I think maybe a bullet hit the laser emitter.
The beam hit the building behind them, but they still had people alive trying to readjust.
Thankfully, he got shot.
I think everyone on the roof is dead, I’m not sure, I think we need to send someone to check, it’s too dangerous.
I’m scared, I just saw my daughter and wife, I don’t want to die, it’s too terrible.
How could they think of using a laser-guided bomb?
I almost couldn’t make it back home, guys, I think we need to leave this building.”
Glolov’s rambling murmurs continued, and he said a lot, but no one laughed at him.
Everyone was immersed in the joy of their narrow escape and were also overcome with extreme panic and fear.
Everyone wondered what they would do if the guided bombs had hit them, or what they would do if someone tried to use guided bombs against them again.
A mercenary also murmured to himself, “We’re just mercenaries.
Laser-guided bombs, aren’t they only used between countries?
We’re just some mercenaries, why use that against us?
Is it really necessary?
Just to blow up our building?
Is it necessary?”
Green Mamba came up behind Glolov, patted him and Gao Yang on the shoulders and said distractedly, “Thank you, you saved everyone.
Now we need to disperse; we can’t stay in this building any longer.”
