Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 209 - 209 207 The Navy's Military Doctor
209: Chapter 207: The Navy’s Military Doctor 209: Chapter 207: The Navy’s Military Doctor In the indoor shooting range of Arilan Moson Studio, Gao Yang was concentrating on shooting with a handgun specially made for him by Jack, the name of which he couldn’t quite determine.
Gao Yang had already fired more than two hundred rounds with his handgun.
Of course, the process was intermittent, firing a magazine’s worth of bullets, checking the points of impact on the target paper to see if the distribution was concentrated, then switching to another type of bullet and continuing to observe the points of impact.
Now, Gao Yang truly understood the concept of a custom gun that truly belonged to him.
In terms of comfort and pointability, he had never imagined that a handgun could be so perfect.
Holding the gun in his hand felt as if it were a part of his body.
Jack had made Gao Yang’s handgun and had done so perfectly, but Jack had not yet had the chance to test their guns.
Therefore, the testing work was just left to Gao Yang himself.
While verifying whether the gun’s various parameters were up to standard, it was also the best way for Gao Yang to get familiar with his own weapon.
High-priced quality bullets and cheaply priced bargain ones, whether frangible or armor-piercing rounds, Gao Yang had tried almost all the commonly found types on the market, and no matter the type of bullet, his gun handled them all with ease.
Moreover, Gao Yang’s handgun retained the appearance of a Colt Government Model M1911A1 on the outside, but at its core, it was a Para-Ordnance P14.45.
Jack had executed this aspect quite well.
Apart from the grip of the handgun looking a bit thicker, in terms of both appearance and inscribed markings on the gun body, Gao Yang’s handgun was just a regular M1911.
Additionally, Gao Yang’s handgun did not use the now more popular double-action trigger, instead, he had Jack keep the traditional M1911 single-action trigger.
Para-Ordnance was currently manufacturing the LDA type of P14.45, the ‘LDA’ meaning ‘Light Double Action’.
Although a light double-action trigger is lighter than a standard double-action trigger, it still requires more force than a single-action trigger.
Gao Yang was more comfortable with a single-action trigger.
Even though a single-action trigger might not be as quick and convenient as a double-action trigger in emergency self-defense situations, Gao Yang’s method of carrying a gun overcame this issue well, so even with a single-action trigger, Gao Yang’s speed in drawing and firing in emergency shooting situations was even faster than that of a double-action handgun.
All these factors together meant that Gao Yang’s gun was truly one of a kind, and it was impossible to assign it an accurate model name unless Gao Yang decided to name his gun himself.
Now, Gao Yang loved his handgun to his very bones.
After firing almost three hundred rounds, the recoil made Gao Yang’s hands so sore that they began to tremble uncontrollably while holding the gun, and only then did Gao Yang reluctantly stop shooting.
After clearing the chamber and placing the handgun on the table, Gao Yang took off his ear protection and, while massaging his wrist, turned with a smile to Yelena who had been watching him shoot all along, “Aren’t you tired of watching already?”
After taking off her ear protection, Yelena responded with a sweet smile, “Of course not.
You look so charming when you shoot, I could watch all day without getting bored.
Also, you seem to be way better than my father and his friends, their shooting is nowhere near as accurate as yours.”
Gao Yang, flattered by Yelena’s compliment, glanced around at the now deserted range and chuckled, “It seems I’ve fired the most bullets.
Let’s go, let’s take a break from here.
If there’s time, we’ll go buy a car.
What kind of car do you like?”
With a sweet smile, Yelena replied, “Right now, I’m actually more interested in buying a handgun, one suitable for girls, a pretty one.
Since you’re so proficient in shooting, I think I should try to practice as well.”
Gao Yang placed the handgun from the shooting bench into its holster and laughed heartily, “Sure, let’s go pick out a handgun that suits you.
I think the recoil on your gun has to be very small; otherwise, if it damages your hands for playing the piano, I would be devastated.”
Talking and joking, Gao Yang was about to leave the range with Yelena to see if there were any suitable handguns for her when Jack pushed open the soundproof door to the range.
Behind Jack, there was also a person wearing a baseball cap who entered the range.
“Hey, Gao, how does it feel?
Good, huh?
I can tell from your expression that you’re extremely satisfied.”
Gao Yang was about to ask Jack if he had a suitable handgun for Yelena, but seeing Jack with another person, he decided not to ask right away.
After a high five with Jack, Gao Yang smiled and said, “I now understand what you meant by a gun that truly belongs to one’s self.
I’ve truly grasped the meaning of those words, so now I’m even more eager for my EBR.
I can hardly wait.”
Jack shrugged and replied, “Just wait.
These things can’t be rushed.
Alright, your buddies are outside cleaning their guns while I need to shoot a few rounds with my friend.
If you’re interested, how about a three-person competition?”
Gao Yang raised his hand and laughed, “My hands are starting to shake, so I’ll let you guys do it.
I need to rest a bit, but I would like to see your shooting skills.”
Jack laughed heartily and nodded to the person who followed him in.
They each took a position before a firing lane, then Jack turned to Gao Yang with a smile, “My friend wants to have a contest with me.
You can be the referee and also act as the target caller.”
Gao Yang was naturally willing to accept, and after he and Yelena put their ear protection back on, they stood behind Jack and his friend and started to watch their shooting.
Jack and his friends didn’t start competing right away but began with some warm-up shooting.
Watching Jack and the man in the baseball cap start shooting, Gao Yang immediately realized that both were quite skilled marksmen.
If he only considered handgun skills, Gao Yang thought he was slightly better than the man in the baseball cap but was a bit behind Jack.
However, there was a caveat: Jack was using his ever-present Glock 21, while Gao Yang had just gotten his hands on his gun.
As for the man with the baseball cap, he had simply grabbed any gun from the pile provided by Jack.
Both men had different shooting techniques.
Jack’s shooting style was apparently that of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC), with his very rapid double-tap shots, and the two bullet hits were extremely close together, sometimes even overlapping.
The man in the baseball cap, however, clearly had the shooting method commonly used by the military.
The styles were different, but the shooting skills were both very good.
Gao Yang watched with keen interest.
Not long after they started the formal competition, the outcome was as Gao Yang expected: Jack, more familiar with the gun and the setting, won.
But neither took the competition’s result to heart, as it was just a friendly match after all.
After Jack and his friend cleared their guns, Gao Yang clapped his hands and said with a light laugh, “Very nice.
Despite different styles, I must say both of you handle your handguns really well, better than I imagined.”
Jack laughed heartily and pointed to the man wearing the baseball cap, saying, “Let me introduce you, Bruce William, my college roommate, who just arrived here.”
Without needing Jack to say more, Gao Yang knew this Bruce William was his friend, as it was almost Christmas and the Arilan Monson Studio had already closed for the holidays.
The only ones still at Arilan Studio were Jack and a few of his friends.
Gao Yang reached out and fist-bumped the man named Bruce William, smiling, “Judging by your shooting style and technique, you must have been a professional soldier, right?”
Bruce nodded and said, “I served in the Navy but was always detailed to the Marines, so I spent most of my service time with the Marines.”
Jack shrugged and added, “Bruce is a medic, so that’s why he’s officially in the Navy but mainly served with the Marines.
The Marines are like stepchildren when it comes to equipment procurement, always behind the Army, but not even having their own medics is just ridiculous.”
The term “medic” caught Gao Yang’s attention.
As soon as Jack mentioned that Bruce was a medic, Gao Yang perked up his ears, and while thinking about how to inquire more about Bruce’s background, his satellite phone suddenly rang.
After a brief apology, Gao Yang answered the call, and as soon as he did, Little Donnie’s voice came through.
“Hey, Ram, there’s a job I think might suit you.
The pay isn’t very high because it doesn’t carry a high level of danger, so the price is correspondingly lower.”
Gao Yang, full of interest, asked, “What job?”
“Escort duty in the Gulf of Aden.
I know someone from a security company who has regular business with a shipping company, but they’re short on manpower.
So, I’ve negotiated a deal.
You guys split the commission.
Basically, for each escort mission, the payout is between thirty to fifty thousand US dollars.
Even after splitting it, you can make fifteen to twenty-five thousand US dollars per mission.
Plus, if work is plentiful, these kinds of missions can happen nearly every day, so I think it’s worth considering.”
Gao Yang said gravely, “If there’s no rush, I’d like to leave after January tenth, so if the timing works, I’ll seriously consider it.”
“The date is flexible.
It’s a long-term job, with freedom to start or stop any time.
I’ll send the details over to you later.”
Still intrigued by the idea of a medic, Gao Yang said eagerly, “Alright, that’s not a problem.
Let’s say twenty thousand US dollars a day.
Although the price is a bit low, escorting in the Gulf of Aden comes with almost no risk apart from the possibility of seasickness among us.
I’ll give it some serious thought.”
After hanging up the phone, Gao Yang was pondering how to inquire further about Bruce’s background when he noticed Bruce looking at him in surprise and saying, “Are you in security?”
Gao Yang hesitated for a moment before responding, “Yes, that’s right.
There are some differences, but it’s essentially the same idea.”
After taking a glance at Jack, Bruce hesitated but then said with a resolute expression, “Sir, may I ask if you need a medic?
If by any chance you do, can we talk about it?” (To be continued.
