Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 106 - 106 105 Old Friend
106: Chapter 105 Old Friend 106: Chapter 105 Old Friend Sitting in the room with nothing to do, Gao Yang felt terribly idle, and in his boredom, he went through his packed items again to check if anything had been missed.
As he rummaged through his things, Gao Yang indeed found something amiss—his personal knife.
Gao Yang had two cold weapons on him, an axe and a hunting knife.
The axe was Gao Yang’s lucky charm, his amulet.
He could leave anything behind, but his axe was a must-have.
Meanwhile, the hunting knife held a place in his heart no less esteemed than that of his axe.
Gao Yang had deep affection for his hunting knife; it was with this knife, found on a guide following his plane crash, that he had killed his first person.
He could say that were it not for his current knife, he would have died in Sudan long ago.
Over the three years on the Sudanese Grasslands, he never parted with his knife, relying on it as both a weapon and a tool.
On the modern battlefield, there aren’t many occasions to use a knife, yet a good knife, especially, is an indispensable item.
Aside from being a weapon of last resort, a knife often serves more importantly as a tool, one of the most essential ones at that.
Gao Yang’s knife was quite nice, finely crafted and expensive, but it was somewhat ill-suited for battlefield use.
Though he felt reluctant, Gao Yang felt he should switch to a more suitable tactical knife for battle.
Looking at the crude leather sheath he had sewn by hand, observing the blade now lined with white, as he considered what knife to exchange it for, he naturally thought of the days and nights spent in Sudan with this hunting knife.
And when he thought of the times it had saved his life, he naturally remembered its previous owner, that South African white man.
During the days he spent at home accompanying his parents, Gao Yang’s father had mentioned the plight of those who perished on the same plane as Gao Yang.
Since the plane belonged to a hunting company, after the crash, none of the victims had received any compensation; the owner of the hunting company had absconded at the first opportunity.
The hunting company was owned by a Huaxia person, and the majority of the passengers were from Huaxia, with only the pilot and that South African guide not being Huaxia People.
Regarding the compensation issue, Gao Yang’s father and the relatives of the other victims had exchanged detailed contact information, all to collaborate on a lawsuit against the absconded owner when he was found.
Having a connection with that South African white man, Gao Yang had looked through his father’s address book and made a note of the previous owner’s family address and contact information.
The South African white man’s name was John Smith, a very typical English name, suggesting descent from the British rather than the majority Boer population of South African whites.
John, or rather his family, lived in Krugersdorp.
To Gao Yang, this was once a distant and unfamiliar place name.
But now that had changed, for after spending some time in Johannesburg, Gao Yang knew that Krugersdorp was a satellite city of Johannesburg, nearby on the outskirts.
It could be said that Gao Yang was now only a stone’s throw away from John’s home.
With this thought, he was suddenly struck with the idea to go see John’s family, to visit his relatives.
Though he felt reluctant, Gao Yang thought that perhaps he should return the knife John had left behind to his family.
In a sense, one could say John had saved his life.
Therefore, Gao Yang felt a duty to visit John’s relatives and, if possible, to express his gratitude at John’s grave.
Gao Yang was a man of action, and at this moment, he could no longer sit still.
Seeing that there was still plenty of daylight, Gao Yang immediately shouldered his bag, packing both the knife and his phone.
Grateful for Johannesburg’s terrible security situation, he also put his pistol into the bag and carried all his South African Rands on his person.
However, considering his Rands amounted to less than a hundred US Dollars, Gao Yang added two thousand US Dollars into his bag just in case.
Once prepared, Gao Yang ran to the bedroom door of Li Jinfang and Cui Bo, shouting, “I’ve got something to do and need to step out.
Anyone want to come with me?”
Cui Bo immediately popped out, excitedly saying, “I’ll go, I’ll go.
What are you going to do?
I’ll come with you.”
Li Jinfang looked at Gao Yang, puzzled, and said, “What’s going on?”
Gao Yang replied, “No big deal, just going to find someone.
Not sure if I’ll be able to, so just treating it like a fun outing.”
Li Jinfang thought for a moment, then immediately said, “Wait for me a second at Rabbit’s place, I’ll go with you.”
Gao Yang didn’t think much of it, and after sitting in Cui Bo’s place for a while, Li Jinfang hurried back with a sly grin, “Brother Yang, I’m really sorry, but something’s come up and I can’t go with you anymore.
Rabbit, you shouldn’t go either.”
“Ah?
Why not?”
Li Jinfang’s face turned stern and he said, “Quit the nonsense, if I say you shouldn’t go, just don’t.
I need to talk to you.
Oh, by the way, can I practice fighting with you later?
Since you’re not going to the shooting range today, you should take the opportunity to practice fighting instead.
Let’s go, right now.”
Cui Bo turned pale with fright.
He had always wanted to practice fighting with Li Jinfang, but after seeing Gao Yang’s miserable state, Cui Bo never brought it up again.
He hadn’t expected that Li Jinfang would come for him this time.
“No, not today, really, it’s not a good day.
Don’t forget I’m a patient, I am a patient!”
“So what if it’s an STD?
Cut the crap.
Since you can’t see for yourself, I’ll have to open your eyes.
Come on, don’t make me get physical.”
Looking at Li Jinfang’s righteous face, Gao Yang felt confused.
They had agreed to go out together, and suddenly, for no apparent reason, he started to hassle Cui Bo.
While he was pondering this, he heard Yelena cheerfully say from outside the door, “Hi, I’m ready, can we set off now?”
Seeing Yelena’s excited demeanor, Gao Yang and Cui Bo immediately realized what Li Jinfang had been up to.
Cui Bo said with tearless grief, “Damn Toad, I don’t mind you creating opportunities for Yelena.
If you had told me earlier, I wouldn’t have gone.
Why did you have to find such a high-sounding excuse?
Jinfang, brother, I get it, really, you don’t need to practice with me anymore, right?”
Li Jinfang gave Gao Yang a flattering smile and said, “Hurry up, Brother Yang, she’s waiting for you.
Bye, I’m not seeing you off haha.”
After saying that, Li Jinfang grabbed Cui Bo by the back of his neck, without a word, dragged him toward the back door.
Poor Cui Bo couldn’t resist Li Jinfang’s clutches and was resigned to his pathetic fate as he was carried off to the backyard.
Yelena, looking at Li Jinfang and Cui Bo, asked in amazement, “Yang, wasn’t it you who invited me?”
Gao Yang replied without hesitation, “It was me who invited you.
Yeah, those two probably didn’t want to third-wheel.
Let’s just go, the two of us, and not worry about them anymore.”
Yelena, clearly delighted, naturally took Gao Yang’s hand and said, “That’s great, let’s hurry out.
I haven’t been out since I got here and I’m almost suffocating.”
Gao Yang wanted to let go of Yelena’s hand but couldn’t bring himself to do it.
He just let her hold his hand and, looking down, walked out with her in silence.
Inwardly, Gao Yang prayed that Glolov and Natalia wouldn’t see him holding hands with Yelena.
He nervously looked around, didn’t spot Natalia, and then quickened his pace, wanting to get away quickly.
However, just as he was about to leave the living room, he heard Natalia’s voice from somewhere saying loudly, “Have fun, and don’t bother coming back for dinner.
If you don’t come home tonight, remember to call.”
