Melting Her Cold Heart -
Chapter 31: I will tell you
Chapter 31: I will tell you
The weekend had come and gone without any issues, much to Sara’s relief. As she prepared for the workweek ahead, she felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. It was finally time to confide in Alex about the mysterious man claiming to be her father and to ask why he had suddenly reentered her life. What were his intentions after all these years? Sara’s mind was a whirlpool of questions, and she was eager for Alex’s insight.
She was hesitant to share details about her alleged father with her friends, unsure of where to begin or what to disclose. Deep down, she suspected that his sudden interest in her life was a facade, hiding his true motives. To protect herself and her friends, Sara felt the need to dig deeper and gather enough information to expose his intentions and prepare them for any possible manipulation or danger. Only then could she sound the alarm, equipping her friends with the knowledge they needed to stay safe.
Sara arrived promptly at Legend Corp. headquarters, looking forward to the day, but her expectations were dashed when she found Alex already seated at his desk, engrossed in the documents before him. His head was bowed, and he seemed completely absorbed in his work.
As Sara scanned the office, everything appeared immaculate and organized, which left her feeling unsettled. This was her domain, yet someone had clearly taken over her responsibilities. Her gaze shifted to the man standing beside Alex, who wore a scowl directed at his boss. However, when Sara entered, his expression changed as he focused intently on her, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her feel like an intruder.
As their eyes met, a slight smile appeared on his lips, quickly followed by a look of confusion. But then, understanding seemed to dawn, and his expression shifted to one of recognition. Suddenly, the perfectly arranged office made sense—he was the one responsible for the transformation.
"Miss Ambrose," he said in a smooth, low voice, addressing her with a tone that suggested he held her in high regard. Though Sara wasn’t surprised he knew her name—after all, he was her superior—his respectful tone caught her off guard. It was as if he was speaking to someone of greater rank, stirring her curiosity about his demeanor.
As she approached them, Sara smiled warmly. "You must be Secretary Skylar, the one I’ve heard so much about," she said, her voice inviting. Their eyes met, and Alex finally lifted his head, narrowing his gaze as their eyes intersected. The air felt charged with an unspoken tension, creating a sense of anticipation between them.
Secretary Skylar stepped forward, his eyes crinkling with a smile as he extended his hand to Sara. "I’m honored to hear that, Miss Ambrose," he said warmly, his handshake firm but not overpowering, striking a balance between professionalism and friendliness.
While Sara shook his hand, her focus was already shifting back to Alex, who wore a scowl. His furrowed brows and narrowed eyes sparked Sara’s instincts. Raising an eyebrow in a silent challenge, she communicated, "I’m not intimidated." It was a bold move, almost insubordinate, but Alex’s behavior had emboldened her. After all, if her boss was acting like a distant stranger, she felt entitled to respond in kind.
Secretary Skylar felt the weight of Alex’s piercing gaze on him but refused to release Sara’s hand. He was intentionally provocative, daring Alex to react, his eyes smoldering with unspoken challenge. The atmosphere grew tense as Alex’s scowl deepened, and despite the growing friction, Skylar maintained his grip, testing the limits of Alex’s possessiveness.
With a subtle motion, Sara freed herself from Skylar’s grasp and turned her attention to Alex, nodding her head respectfully. "Good morning, President," she said, her voice steady but imbued with quiet strength. This gesture blended respect and self-assurance, acknowledging his authority while asserting her own presence.
As she spoke to Alex, Secretary Skylar sensed a shift in the atmosphere, and the intense gaze that had been locked onto his back finally eased. He turned to Alex, his expression transforming from challenging to confrontational, as if daring him to return the hostility. The silence between them hung heavy, thick with tension.
"Leave us, Secretary Skylar," Alex said abruptly, his voice low and commanding. The unexpected dismissal startled both Skylar and Sara, their eyes widening as they processed the command. Skylar’s gaze lingered on Alex, searching for some explanation, before he turned to Sara.
With a charming smile and a playful glint in his eye, Secretary Skylar bid Sara farewell, his voice smooth. "I’ll see you around, Miss Ambrose," he said, offering a slight bow that Sara interpreted as an attempt at gentlemanly charm. As he exited, his confident stride suggested he felt he had made a lasting impression, leaving Sara and Alex alone to navigate the lingering tension in the room.
Alex rose from his seat, his eyes locked onto Sara with an intensity that made her step back, momentarily halting his approach. But his determination soon overcame his hesitation, and he closed the gap between them, his presence overwhelming. Memories of restless nights filled his mind, yearning for her warmth, while his thoughts were consumed with the desire to be close to her. Yet, with her so near, he resisted the urge to pull her into an embrace, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.
"Did you have a good weekend?" Alex asked, his voice filled with genuine curiosity and concern. His eyes seemed to search her soul, seeking to uncover the truth behind her façade. He was invested in knowing if she had found peace in the last few days or if her experiences mirrored his own restless nights.
Sara hesitated, her eyes wandering around the room as if seeking an escape from the intensity of his gaze. "My weekend... was..." she trailed off, unease creeping into her voice. Despite sensing Alex’s genuine concern, her discomfort in their closeness made it hard to articulate her feelings. The truth was that her weekend had been anything but peaceful, plagued by worries about her father’s legacy and the threats looming over her and her loved ones.
Sensing her reluctance to share, Alex gently wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. This tender gesture surprised her at first, but a wave of calm washed over her as she relaxed into his embrace. His gentle whisper encouraged her to voice her fears.
"Open up to me about your troubles," Alex whispered. "I want to help ease your burden." Sara’s heart fluttered at his words, but she struggled to trust him. "Share your worries with me," he urged again, his voice gentle and encouraging. Sara’s breath caught as she searched his eyes.
Why was she still in his embrace? She wondered inwardly, yet she made no effort to break free.
"Sweetheart," Alex said softly, his fingers gently cradling her face as he tilted her chin up. His warm gaze met hers, and she found herself mesmerized.
"Talk to me. I am here for you," he coaxed. Sara didn’t know when he had spun her around to face him directly. He pressed a gentle kiss on her forehead, and she involuntarily closed her eyes, relishing the feel of his lips against her skin.
"I... it’s just... I wanted to ask about my... Mr. Goldman," she stammered, studying his reaction for any hint of what he might reveal, but his expression remained calm and patient. It surprised her that he was willing to do something like this for someone who often turned him down without a second thought. "What do you know that I don’t?" she finally asked, his steady gaze remaining fixed on her as he pressed his forehead against hers, his thumb gently stroking her cheek.
Though she maintained a stoic facade, inside, she was a whirlpool of emotions. The gentle pressure of Alex’s forehead against hers and the soft stroke of his thumb sent shivers down her spine, making her feel as if she were melting into his touch. Her defenses began to crumble, and despite her best efforts, a tiny spark of attraction ignited within her. She quickly suppressed it, unwilling to acknowledge the feeling.
"I’ll tell you everything you need to know," he said, and though she had anticipated it, it still took her by surprise.
