Chapter 168: 168

Six years ago,

"I am sorry that I have to leave like this," Annabelle’s face was filled with Sadness as she gently caressed the baby’s cheek and her eyes turned glassy with unshed tears. "I have to leave you because if I stay, you and your papa will be in danger."

Annabelle cradling a baby barely a month old. On her face was a bitter smile and behind it were any emotions she tried hard to suppress. The weather took a turn as it started raining heavily. The one beautiful night with a full moon and many stars now looked so gloomy as if sharing in her pain.

The baby stirred, then stretched ever so lazily followed by a toothless yawn. Her little fisted hands raised adorably, earning a smile from its mother.

She blinked many times, stopping the tears from falling from her eyes, and then kissed the baby’s forehead before letting her down. "I’ll miss you, Julia," she said before leaving the room. Casting one last look inside the room from outside the door, the baby slept soundly beside her father. Her face was as serene as ever."Goodbye Lloyd," she whispered and slowly closed the door making sure that there was no sound made and the rain beating against the roof made that possible.

As soon as she stepped out of the apartment, two men stood before and she frowned but sighed in relief inwardly.

"I told you I would return home myself," she said to the two men before pushing them aside and walking between them. They quickly followed behind her, one of them holding an umbrella for her but she was not at all interested in staying under it. "Drive," she ordered as soon as she entered the awaiting car.

The bodyguards exchanged glances but then nodded and bowed their heads. She closed her eyes without acknowledging them. Her mind is still occupied with the pain of separation from her child. After many hours of driving, the car finally stopped at the parking lot of a hotel and she opened her eyes and descended the car without waiting for the bodyguard to open the door.

"What’s her room number?" she asked. Her voice was still as cold as when she met them at the front of the door. If they were not mistaken, it seems her anger increased even more.

"Number 112," one of the bodyguards replied.

She went away without wasting another second, heading for the said room. Her mother had crossed the line today and she wanted to give her a piece of her mind. Whatever happened after that can happen. Reaching room 112, she turned the handle and luckily for the door, it wasn’t locked.

"I told you I would leave on my own, mum, what’s the meaning of this?" She demanded but her mother still sat flipping through the pages of the magazine in her hand until she reached the last page before closing and tossing it aside.

"And I told you not to make me wait," her mother replied. Her expression mirrored that of her daughter’s, her brows pulled together and a look of disappointment in her eyes. "Why do you still cling to that nobody, Anna? He has nothing to offer you."

Anna clenched her fists tightly as she fought against her emotions. "You have never once tried to understand me or take a second to look at him. You don’t care about what I want, Mother, why? Why do you resent him so much when you know nothing about him?"

"I know he has nothing to offer you. He can’t give you a future and I won’t allow you to throw away your future for him, nor will I let him leach on you. On our family," she emphasized. "I have worked too hard to let nobody feed for free," her mother said with finality, leaving no room for argument. " We will leave Empire City by morning. If you still want him alive, be a good girl and obediently come with me."

"What...?"

"The next room is yours. A new set of clothes have been made available. Change out of those rags," her mother said, not giving her any room to speak. "You can leave now. I have had a long day and I’d like my rest."

Anna stared at the woman who just so happened to be her mother. Was this how she had always been? Then how come she hadn’t noticed it before?

"Do you not wish to keep him alive anymore? All it takes is a phone call and he’ll be dead in no time."

"Mum..." Anna was at a loss for words.

"Go to bed and forget about him. Once we leave this city, I will make sure you get your life back. My daughter will only interact with people of her status." she said dismissively. Left with no other choice other than to obey or risk having the man she loved and her daughter killed, she left. She knew very well that her mother, Evelyn Henshaw would keep to her words. It was probably better to keep the knowledge of her child from her.

As thunderstruck, little Julia was startled awake and her cries filled the room, waking her sleeping father. Following his instincts, he picked up the baby before looking around for her mother but she was nowhere in sight. He frowned but decided pacifying the baby was more important now.

"Sshhh, it’s okay. It’s just thunder. It can’t harm you," he said as he rocked the baby from side to side. He repeated coaxing words until she finally stopped crying.

After trying for almost an hour, and she finally slept off, he sighed in relief before taking her to her crib and leaving the room to find her mother. But even after searching every corner of the apartment, he was met with an empty house and silence to his every call.

"Anna..." he called again, as he exited the kitchen. He returned to the room and found all of her things still where they should be and he calmed down a bit, thinking that perhaps she stepped out for a moment. Although he felt that something was wrong, he chose to believe that she would return. It wasn’t the first time she had gone out late like this and each time, he had always overreacted. This time, he wanted to trust that she would come back, like always.

"Anna, where are you?" He couldn’t help but wonder.
