Melting Her Cold Heart -
Chapter 143: Let Her Go
Chapter 143: Let Her Go
Sara stared at him, almost in pity. Did he just reiterate how valuable she was in his life now that she was no longer a part of it? Sara had always found it amusing each time she thought of it. But that aside, she needed to answer his question and make it crystal clear to him.
"Alex never cheated on me, Adam. He never found to not be enough for him. He never sought a harem. So yes, I have no problem going back to my past with him."
"And I seek a harem?" Adam asked, flabbergasted. Why and how did she come to that assumption that he sought a harem?
"Don’t you?" Sara asked with a raised brow. She looked at him not for an answer but so that he could understand what he had been doing and she wasn’t wrong to say it that. "With what you’ve been doing, what were after if not a harem? I have no intention of being part of a harem, so I left. You can gather as many women as you’d like now. There will be no Sara to get in the way again."
Adam opened his mouth but couldn’t find the words to say to her. He just stared at her wordlessly for a while before he realized the passing time. But before he could speak, Sara spoke,
"What we had is in the past, and I’ll like it if it stays that way. I am a married woman, and I am happy with my marriage. So please keep the distance and all ulterior motives aside. As we are now, we are aunt and nephews, and nothing will change that." she said.
Adam stated incredulously at her upon hearing her words. Not that she was wrong but because he never expected her to say that to him.
After a while, he finally found his voucher and asked, "Did you ever love me, or was I just there as a stand-in for your lover?"
Sara frowned. She knew she loved him then, but now, she didn’t think she could answer that with a straight yes or no. Her love for him before was strong, and she was willing to bear anything except for cheating. But this king about it now, she couldn’t imagine herself loving him if she had her memories then. The heartache she experienced turned to be a blessing in disguise. One that set her back on the right tracks.
A subtle smile crawled up her lips, and she pressed them into a thin line before looking up at him again and then asked,
"Does it matter anymore?" She watched him but didn’t get an answer. "That’s right, it doesn’t matter anymore whether I loved you or not. Don’t try to raise the dead."
Sara smiled mildly at him before walking past him, and all he could do was turn and follow her with his eyes until she was standing next to Alex. His fists clenched, but he soon released them in defeat.
"So that’s how it is? " he muttered and chuckled self depricatingly.
"Don’t raise the dead," she says.
"Just how quickly did all the feelings you once confessed to me die? Were they so shallow that it didn’t stand a chance in the presence of your first love?" He continued in a hushed tone.
"Let go, son," Adam heard his father’s voice before he felt the hand that landed on his shoulder and squeezed mildly on it. "She isn’t yours anymore. Let her go."
"Why should I...?"
"Adam..." Dominic interrupted him, silencing him with a meaningful gaze. "Let go."
Adam, who had been looking over his shoulder at his father, looked away with gritted teeth and clenched jaws.
"I know you regret and and I also know you hate losing to Alexander," Dominic continued, hoping to get to him. "To be honest, I hate it too. I despise losing to my younger brother. But even I can’t deny that he is capable. He has proven that time and time again. So, I have learned to live with it. To deal with, even though it hurts my pride," Adam still didn’t look at him, and he was not at all bothered by that.
"But you, Adam, you are different. Your age and his may be close, but do not forget that it is your elder and uncle. If the need arises, he could harm you in the name of discipline and at that time...." Dominic grits his teeth as it still hurt him knowing thay he couldn’t do nothing if that time ever comes. "....there would be nothing that I and your mother can do. So, while you still can, let go before it is too late."
"The same way you did?" Adam asked. He turned abruptly and faced his father, who stared at him with a look of understanding, a complete contrast to that if Adam had been dark and accusing.
"No," Dominic shook his head. "I never let go. If I did, I would be as bitter as I am now. Seeing everything he has achieved and accomplished wouldn’t have made me this jealous...envious....and.... bitter. But you still can," his voice softened before he said, "You don’t have to end up like me."
"What exactly are you trying to say, Father?" He felt like he understood it but also felt like he couldn’t understand. Those were simple words for comprehension, but why was it so hard for him to do so? His father wasn’t the first person to talk to him about this. There was his grandfather, Williams, and then his friends, Chris and Austin.
But this time, it felt different. Maybe it was because he and his father shared sentiments and could understand what the other felt, or perhaps it was just the fact that they were parent and child.
"You don’t have to worry about it so much. And don’t try too hard. All I ask is that you give it some thought and walk towards that." Dominic said, patting Adam on the shoulder and was about to leave when Adam spoke.
"He has my woman, Father. How am I supposed to let go of that and make peace as you have asked?
Dominic stopped and looked at him, and a bitter, sad smile graced his lips. "Trust me when I say I have once been in your shoes," Afam brows pulled together, but all Dominic did was smile at him. "I had lived someone who I could only watch as she marrued someone and someone who I didn’t dare to oppose. There was nothing that I could do. But guess what," Adam just stared at him even though he was asked to guess.
"I moved on. I had you. And many years later, Olivia. And now, here we are."
Adam turned around, ready to head out when Dominic stopped him.
"Promise me you will give it a try. You could learn from him." Dominic pleaded.
"The woman you loved, and the man she married, who are they?" Adam asked instead, but Dominic only smiled subtly and let go of his shoulder, but didny reply.
"That is not important because she has already passed away," was all he said before he walked away, and Adam turned and stared at his father’s back with furrowed brows.
"I am not you, Father," Adam uttered in a whisper b3fire he turned around and once again stared at Sara. Alex’s wound around her waist, and she was smiling as beautifully as he had always remembered her smile to be. Except that this time, she was smiling because of another man.
He was not the one responsible for that smile.
When she looks at him now, she frowns and looks annoyed.
"Is there really no other way?" He still couldn’t see himself becoming friends with Alex. He didn’t mind being friends with Sara, i it truly proved futile to get her back, but Alexander? He couldn’t even imagine a time like that ever existing or coming into reality.
He sighed in frustration and walked away from there only to be stopped just moments later, and his annoyance knew no bounds. Couldn’t people just leave him when he wanted?
"What do you want?" He asked aftertaste g a second look at the young man who had approached him. He didn’t seem to be a journalist but a regular staff of Apex Tower.
"I am sorry, sir. Master Sean asked me to give this to you. It is truly not my invention to disturb you."
Adam looked at the white piece of paper that was being given to him for a second before he took it and dismissed the messenger.
