Chapter 50: Beefing The Moon Goddess

The creaking and swaying of the carriage filled the air as Mirian and Ryder sat opposite each other. It would be weird if the atmosphere was peaceful or lively.

Mirian’s eyes blazed with indignation as she glared intently at Ryder, while he, on the other hand, appeared utterly relaxed, his eyes closed, and head resting against the carriage wall.

"Do you find me so alluring, Mirian?" Ryder’s voice was low and smooth, his words dripping with amusement, despite his eyes remaining shut. "You’ve been staring for over thirty minutes."

Mirian scowled, but beneath her indignation, a flutter in her chest betrayed her true feelings. She couldn’t deny the attraction she felt towards Ryder - every woman would feel some degree of attraction towards him, until he opened his mouth.

But that wasn’t the point here. For some reason, she had this growing sense to protect her Luna from this homme fatale’s allure. Her instincts told her that Ryder was bad news to the Luna.

"Unfortunately, I’m taken, Mirian," he said, his voice low and husky. Ryder’s eyes slowly opened, his gaze locking onto Mirian’s stunned face. A sly smile spread across his face. "Don’t let My Luna know you can’t take your eyes off me. She’s like a volcano when jealous."

Mirian’s face ignited with a fierce blush as she spluttered, "You - you wish!" But her pink cheeks and flustered demeanor only seemed to amuse Ryder, his smile growing wider as he leaned back into his seat, his eyes never leaving hers.

"I’m curious about something, Mirian," Ryder said, his voice dripping with intrigue as he folded his arms across his chest. "What does the Moon Goddess task you with this time?" His words were laced with subtle sarcasm.

Mirian frowned, completely lost to whatever he was yapping about.

"Does she want you to...break us up? Kill her...?" his tone suddenly took a sharp turn, eyes darkening with intensity as he leaned forward, his face inches apart from Mirian’s.

The air seemed to vibrate with tension. His warm breath danced across her skin, sending shivers down her spine. Mirian’s heart skipped a beat as she froze, her eyes locked onto Ryder’s, unsure of what he was talking about. But as she took in those icy dark blue eyes, dread sprouted from the pit of her stomach.

"Wh– what are you talking about!?" Mirian stuttered, her voice barely above a whisper, as she tried to inch away from Ryder’s invasive proximity.

Ryder’s lips curved into a breathtaking smile. The smile was so radiant that it was unnerving, and Mirian felt an involuntary tremble run through her body.

"I’m saying, know when to stop, Mirian." The words were laced with an undercurrent of menace, and Mirian felt a knot in her throat.

Mirian’s gaze faltered, and she looked away, unable to withstand the intensity of his stare any longer. The tension between them seemed to dissipate as Ryder, too, leaned back, his eyes drifting shut once more. The silence that followed was oppressive, heavy with unspoken words and unresolved emotions.

The carriage creaked and the wheels groaned. The chaotic sound of horses’ hooves echoed through the air, a steady beat that punctuated the tense silence within.

They’d been on this journey for over thirty minutes and they seemed not to be stopping anytime soon.

As the silence stretched taut, Mirian had tried to ignore him, to pretend that he didn’t speak some weird shit earlier, but curiosity got the better of her. She shifted her gaze back to the man in front of her, her eyes narrowing slightly.

She’d tried to decipher the meaning behind his enigmatic words, but they only seemed to swirl in her mind like a puzzle with missing pieces.

Ryder’s words had hinted at a familiarity. It was as if they shared a history, one that she couldn’t recall. Perhaps, he mistook her for someone else. With that, annoyance bubbled in her heart.

"Listen, Ryder, I may forgive you for mistaking me for someone else, but for threatening me, I won’t accept that," Mirian said, her voice firm.

Ryder’s response was languid, his tone dripping with nonchalance. "I have a vivid memory, Mirian."

Mirian’s eyes flashed with indignation. "Then, your memory must be shitty," she shot back, her words laced with venom.

Ryder shrugged, his expression unyielding. He wasn’t interested in feeding her anger, and his nonchalant demeanor only seemed to infuriate Mirian further. With a dismissive air, he turned his attention to the window and lifted the curtains but unfortunately, Reana wasn’t in sight. He sighed and let the curtains fall back.

Mirian rolled her eyes, a mix of annoyance and disdain on her face. "Don’t you feel ashamed clinging to the Luna like a baby wants milk?" she sneered, her voice dripping with malice. "A man should have some dignity, some pride. Not be so...dependent on a woman."

"Lucky for you, I’m not a man," Ryder said nonchalantly but never did he expect what to come next.

Mirian’s eyes widened in shock, her face pale. She hadn’t expected Ryder to reveal his true nature so casually. For a moment, she was speechless, her mind reeling with the implications.

"You’re...a woman?" Mirian stuttered, trying to process the information. She’d heard stories of men who felt like women inside, and stories of men who swung both ways. Was Ryder one of those?!

Ryder blinked, observing the dumb girl’s face for a while longer. "Seems the moon goddess made you dumb this time. Just like her."

"How dare you speak like that about the moon goddess!?"

"Isn’t she?"

Mirian rolled her eyes but said nothing.

"As I thought."

After a short silence, Mirian asked again, "You seem to have mommy issues with the moon goddess."

"The more accurate word is, hatred, Mirian," Ryder corrected, his voice dripping with venom. "And it’s not just a simple hatred, it’s a deep-seated loathing that burns within my very soul." His eyes seemed to darken, his gaze piercing through hers. "The moon goddess and I...we have a complicated history, one that is steeped in blood and betrayal."

Mirian’s eyes widened in alarm as she recoiled into her seat, her heart racing with fear. She had never seen anyone speak about the goddess with such venom, such malice. Ryder’s words sent shivers down her spine, and she couldn’t help but wonder what kind of person could harbor such hatred towards a deity.

"You’re...you’re not even afraid of the goddess’s wrath?" Mirian stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.
