MATED TO THE SECRET ALPHA -
Chapter 43: Passing A Message
Chapter 43: Passing A Message
Madam Katherine was having breakfast when a knock sounded on her door. Her gaze shifted from the table spread and called out to a servant, "Check who that is."
The omega hurried to the entrance and returned with a wooden box and a short note tuck on top. "It’s a delivery for you, Ma’am."
"A delivery for me?" Madam Katherine’s brow furrowed in puzzlement. She wasn’t expecting anything. But as the possibility dawned on her that it could be from Kael, her eyes lit up and she waved the servant over, "bring it here, quickly." She said, clearing a section of the table.
The omega doubled her steps until getting to the dining table. She carefully lifted the box and placed it on the table before Madam Katherine. As the servant stepped back, Madam Katherine’s fingers reached for the box but halted mid-way. Turning to the servant, she waved her hand.
"You may leave," she said. If Kael had sent it, it was likely something sensitive, something meant for her eyes alone. Her son had gone away from the pack for close to a month and should be returning soon.
Her lips curled into a smile, watching the omega returned to her previous doings. Madam Katherine couldn’t wait for Kael to return and put Reana in her place.
She pulled the box to herself and the note caught her attention. Plucking it from the lid, she opened it to read.
[See this, it’s as a result of an unsafe pack. Stepmother, rogues are roaming the pack lately and it’s very dangerous. If by chance Vivian stopped at your place to catch a breath, tell her to return to my protection. I’d be devastated if her head was suddenly brought to us...]
The smile drained from Madam Katherine’s face, replaced by a sense of foreboding. She knew immediately who had sent the package, and her instincts screamed that it wouldn’t be anything good. Her brows furrowed in trepidation as she halted reading the note mid-sentence, her hands trembling slightly as she flung the lid of the box open.
The content revealed itself, and Madam Katherine’s world shattered. She jerked back with a blood-curdling shriek, "Ahhh!!"
Her chair scraped against the floor as she tumbled backward and fell off, her body crumpling in a heap, eyes widened in abject horror, as color drained fast from her face.
The omegas and two guards, alerted by Madam Katherine’s anguished cry, rushed over.
"Madam, what—" one of the guards began, but his words died on his lips as he took in the content of the box.
The room fell into a deafening silence as the servants and guards stood frozen, their widened eyes fixed on Ryan’s severed head, their faces ashen and horrified.
"G-get it away from here!" Madam Katherine’s voice trembled, her words filled with horror. "Take it away! Now!" she demanded, her eyes wide with terror.
As she watched a guard hesitantly approach the box, Madam Katherine’s mind recoiled in terror. She recalled the way Beta Ryan’s lifeless eyes had seemed to stare at her with malice, as if his severed head had somehow sprung to life. As if blaming her for his death.
A chill rushed through her spine, leaving her feeling icy cold.
The guard’s hands trembled as he reached for the box, but in a horrific twist of fate, his foot slipped on the polished wooden floor. The box flew from his grasp, its lid bursting open as it crashed to the ground. Beta Ryan’s severed head with fresh blood, bounced once, twice, before coming to rest on Madam Katherine’s lap.
"AHHH!!" Madam Katherine’s scream was a raw, animalistic sound, torn from the depths of her terror-stricken soul. She frantically pushed the head away, her hands shaking violently as they slid through the warm, sticky blood that now soaked her hands and elegant gown.
And then, in an instant, her eyes rolled back, her pupils disappearing as her body went limp. A faint whisper escaped her lips as she slumped forward, unconscious, her elegant form crashing to the floor amidst the chaos and blood.
...
Reana let out a contented sigh, her eyes closing in satisfaction as she savored the last bite of her breakfast. The meal was exceptionally delicious on this day, and she couldn’t help but feel that it was a fitting reward for her double victories. First, she’d eliminated the insufferable Beta Ryan, an eyesore she was forced to tolerate for three years.
And secondly, she’d sent her stepmother, Katherine, tumbling into unconsciousness - a tiny but sweet revenge for sheltering Vivian.
That’s right. Reana had planted a spy within her stepmother’s household, and the spy had confirmed that Vivian was hiding in Katherine’s home. With that knowledge, Reana had sent the gruesome package to send a message and create chaos.
Ryan’s head would undoubtedly be shown to Vivian and would make her lose her senses, causing her to act impulsively. Reana couldn’t wait for the drama.
"Tee-hee," she chuckled, her lips curled into a ruthless smile as she thought of Vivian’s unhinged reaction. That idiot would certainly come for revenge.
...
With her breakfast concluded, Reana held a meeting with the pack’s high-ranking warriors to select a new beta. The hall was abuzz with murmurs and speculation as all warriors assumed that Kira would be the choice for obvious reasons - she was the Gamma - next in line, and had good relations with the Luna.
The notion of two women occupying the pack’s highest positions felt strange and unsettling to the warriors, yet they couldn’t deny the system.
However, in a shocking turn of events, Reana chose the grizzled old warrior, Thane, one of the Deltas, as the new Beta. The unexpected decision raised eyebrows throughout the hall.
According to the pack’s rigid hierarchy, the positions of power were clearly defined: Alpha, Luna, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Zeta, followed by the warriors, guards, and finally, the omegas.
Thane’s appointment bypassed Gamma Kira, leaving many to wonder why. After all, Kira was a formidable warrior.
Reana knew they needed an explanation, so she gave them one;
