MATED TO THE SECRET ALPHA -
Chapter 219: Height Of Disrespect
Chapter 219: Height Of Disrespect
"That’s a heavy accusation, Alpha Dennis. One made without evidence," Theon said calmly, but there was an edge to his voice. However, Alpha Dennis didn’t deem Theon fit to have his response. He ignored him.
Marcus chuckled. Not out of amusement. No. It was that brittle kind of laugh you use to keep your sanity from cracking wide open. His claws itched to carve a lesson into flesh, but he held the line—for now.
His Alpha might be dead for all they knew, and his Luna was breaking apart. Every one of them was trying hard to hold themselves back from tearing this place apart, because it is apparently...sacred, yet their so-called goddess couldn’t fortify this place from a monster’s attack.
That’s right. Marcus suspected that whatever Alpha Snow fought, could only be that monster they encountered on their way here. Otherwise, nothing else best explained what happened.
"She owes you?" Marcus repeated, his eyes narrowing. "Was it your warriors who ran into that mountain when it split open like a beast’s mouth? Was it your pack member who risked everything to stop whatever ancient hell just woke up in there? No? Then how dare you speak of owed, Dennis."
Alpha Dennis bristled. "Watch your tone, warrior. You forget your place."
"No," Marcus said, stepping closer, the air crackling with tension between them. "You forget yours. This isn’t some council debate over territory lines. Something powerful...a monster like no other had clawed its way into our world, and the words of appreciation you could utter for Al— Ryder sacrificing himself to keep your sorry asses safe was to suspect his woman?"
Well, Marcus lied, and he knew. Alpha Snow would rather cut off his hands than fight for these fools, but hey, anything to make these vultures leave Reana alone.
"He’s not dead," Reana hissed and Marcus’s lips thinned.
Dennis’s lips curled in disdain, but before he could speak, Rena beat him to it.
"You want answers?" Her voice was soft at first, like a thread barely holding. Then it snapped taut. "Then go in there and find them yourself."
The gathered Alphas flinched. None moved.
Reana’s gaze flickered to Dennis, her eyes wild with grief and rage. "You all stood and watched. You felt the battle. You saw the mountain quarter collapse. You felt that power. You knew it wasn’t something of this world." Her lips curled bitterly. "And yet you point fingers at me—as if I summoned it. As if I understand it."
"Summon..." Alpha Dennis reasoned, then he sneered. "You do have a reason to summon a monster, Luna Reana," he began. "This council meeting was held because of you in the first place. And when everyone was present, you weren’t. Perhaps, you heard that Alpha Snow would join us, so you tried to summon a monster, in case the verdict wasn’t in your favor."
A few gasped at the assumption and some frown. For example, Alpha Julius.
"How did you know that monsters can be summoned, Alpha Dennis of the South Wood Pack? Is that what your pack does? Is that why your pack is safe from monsters?" He asked calmly, but the edge in his voice couldn’t be mistaken for clout.
"Perhaps, he’s the reason the West Wood Pack is being attacked religiously by monsters." Marcus chimed in and huffed, "Who knows if he’s not jealous and after the West Wood Pack’s resources? Heard his pack members love plundering, raiding, and killing powerless humans to steal resources."
The jab hit the mark and Alpha Dennis growled low as he took a threatening step forward, but Marcus did the same, not backing down.
Dennis’s eyes flicked to Marcus’s hands, noticed how still they were. Too still. His fingers twitched. He could see the young man fighting the urge to throw a punch at him, and Dennis’s heart trembled, but he bared his teeth anyway.
Alpha or not, it would take nothing for Marcus to put him in his place —beat him to a pulp— but fighting was the last thing the Zeta engaged in while in a terrible mood, because it took more than just a miracle for his opponent to not meet a devastating end.
"You dare—"
"Yes," Reana interrupted coldly, her voice low and deadly. "He does. And I suggest you let him."
Their banter was grating on her nerves, but even so, she was impressed with Marcus’s sharp tongue.
Alpha Dennis scoffed. "So the widow grows claws now?"
Truth be told, Dennis was scared of Marcus. He was an Alpha, but Marcus gave him a bad feeling.
Something about the Zeta’s aura was wrong — too steady, too unreadable. Like still water that ran dangerously deep. He didn’t want to engage Marcus in a fight, knowing fully well that he might not stand a chance, so he hoped that someone would bail him out of the awkward face-off and save him face.
And when Luna Reana intervened, he subtly breathed a sigh of relief, but didn’t back down. He intended to tear her down, to discredit her before the meeting.
Reana had been silent, reason he thought she would take every punch, every dirt he threw at her silently, but to his dismay, she turned, eyes unfocused at first, but after a blink, they zeroed in on him and all the rage, grief, and power behind them slammed into Dennis like a hurricane. "I’ve always had claws. Want to feel how fast they could rip out your treacherous tongue?"
Alpha Dennis’s eyes saw red. The vein on his forehead bulged. He tried to salvage his image with a witty retort but Alpha Julius didn’t give him that chance.
"I assume we still recall why we’re here?"
Another Alpha cleared his throat awkwardly. "Let’s focus on the matter at hand. Monsters—"
Reana didn’t pay them heed anymore and returned her gaze to the destruction ahead. Seeing the dust was settling and her warriors’ figures could be seen, she moved and behind her, Marcus followed.
Silence fell. All eyes turned to her retreating back. Some scowled, some glared, other deadpan.
The matter about such a powerful monster that could cause such unrest attacking their sacred ground—something that had never happened before, should be treated as paramount, but the good Luna turned her back on them.
"The height of disrespect!" Alpha Dren hissed.
