MATED TO THE SECRET ALPHA -
Chapter 162: Theon’s Objection
Chapter 162: Theon’s Objection
"Yes," Malric said, his voice low and cold, "and I will not let my blood destroy what generations have bled to protect."
Theon’s shoulders tensed, but he said nothing. He had done his part - spoken the truth. Now, the council had to decide if they were brave enough to face it.
A heavy silence fell. One elder cleared his throat. Another stared at the floor. Finally, Elder Inara, the only female elder and perhaps the wisest among them, leaned forward.
"We need Luna Reana. Without her alliance, the monsters will destroy us all. We cannot survive another war, not after what happened in the North." Her sharp eyes cut through the council. "Killian must step down."
Everyone knew that was the only solution, though nobody wanted to be the first to say it – a person with a defect cannot be an Alpha.
And Alpha Killian’s defect wasn’t one that could be overlooked – he had just one hand now.
Malric smiled, slow and dangerous. "Now you’re speaking sense." He continued, "I’ll assume the position of Alpha and go back to Luna Reana, at the crack of dawn. When I return, we can carry out the ceremony and formally crown me the Alpha."
The elders exchanged glances - some ashamed, others frowned. Elder Garrick’s lips thinned into a grim line, but he said nothing. Even he couldn’t argue anymore.
"Make no mistake," Malric said, his gaze sweeping across the room, "this is not a coup. It is a rescue." He stepped closer to the council table. "Killian lost more than a hand. He lost his judgment, his strength, his control. He’s putting us all in danger."
Elder Inara nodded solemnly. "Then it’s settled. The council will prepare the rites. But be warned, Malric – Luna Reana is no fool. She will not be charmed by hollow promises."
Malric’s smirk returned, sharp and cutting. "Fortunately, I never make hollow promises."
A slow, weighty finality settled over the room. Theon finally spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. "What if Killian resists?"
Malric’s smile faded. "Then he’ll be treated like any other threat to the pack."
"I’m afraid you cannot become the Alpha." All heads turned to Theon. They almost forgot he was there, because he’d been too silent.
"What are you talking about?" Malric frowned, displeased. "If I cannot be the Alpha, then who will?"
He and his Killian were the only males in the Alpha lineage. Now that Killian was no longer fit to remain the Alpha, the path should’ve been clear.
Theon stepped down from the dais, one step at a time. Normally, he wouldn’t have objected to Malric becoming the Alpha. In fact, there was a time he thought of putting him on the seat - even though Malric himself was no better than his brother.
But with his life and that of the pack members on the line, Beta Theon has no choice but to claim the Alpha seat.
Lifting his chin, he faced everyone with the force of a beta that he was. "I, will become the next Alpha."
Silence.
A stunned, deafening silence fell across the hall.
One second. Five seconds. Ten...
It took them long seconds to react.
A breathe. A sharp breath from someone.
Malric snapped, his eyes blazed with disbelief. "You?" he spat, voice laced with venom. "You’re a Beta. You were born to serve, not rule."
Theon didn’t flinch. "And yet, here I stand, the only one capable of leading this pack without dragging it into ruin."
Several murmurs rose among the elders – some in agreement, others in outrage. The Elders exchanged glances, whispering among themselves. Even the warriors at the edge of the dais stiffened, caught between loyalty and logic.
"You think you can bypass bloodline tradition just because Killian lost control?" Malric stepped forward, teeth bared. "You’re not even a blue-blood."
Theon’s jaw tightened, but his voice remained calm. "Tradition does not protect the pack. Strength, clarity, and leadership do, and I have all three."
Malric stared in disbelief. He’d done so much to get this beta to take his side. He schemed. He manipulated. He bent the rules, broke oaths, and sold half his soul to convince this Beta to ditch his brother and support him.
But this man had stood his ground and refused to stage a coup, claiming it was morally not right. And now? Now the same Beta dared stand before him, spine straight, eyes calm, daring to challenge him?
"You forget your place," Malric growled, stepping closer, the air around him tightening with rage. "Without my father, you’d still be groveling at the lowest... in the woods with your mother! "
But Beta Theon didn’t cower. Instead, he met Malric’s fury with steady defiance. "And without me, your war would’ve been lost before it even began."
He continued. "My family held the spectrum of Betas from time immemorial. And I may not be a blue-blood, but I’m half blue-blood."
"Lies!" Malric thundered. His gaze moved around the hall, expecting the elders to join in calling Theon out for lying, but none of them responded.
Beta Theon’s mother was an omega serving the Beta’s wife of her time. Then, the Beta felt attracted to her and bedded her in secret. When she got pregnant, the Beta refused to take responsibility - fearing his wife’s fury, and sent the omega away.
She bore his child in silence and for years, the child and his mother suffered alone in the woods, until one time, the Alpha went hunting, got hurt and fell off the cliff. In his terrible state, he was almost killed by wild animals. It was the child, Theon, who saved him.
The Alpha, feeling gratitude, and seeing how strong the boy was, took the boy and his mother back to the pack house and took the child under his arms.
Theon was trained by his own Beta father, and surprisingly, the boy didn’t lack. In fact, he proved to be better than his father.
The Alpha, pleased, pronounced Theon as the next Beta - no matter which of his sons became Alpha after him.
