Chapter 149: Ophilia And The Block Of Ice

Mirian deflated like a balloon, her shoulders sagging, even as she left the dining hall.

She couldn’t find the words to answer the Luna’s inquiry about Marcus.

How did the Luna even know about her relationship with Marcus? Did Ryder tell her? She shook her head. Ryder might be anything but a snitch. She trusted he wouldn’t betray her.

Mirian’s head was aching as much as her heart was. The Luna had told her to consider her options well and settle the matter with wisdom to avoid causing a war between both packs.

As she trudged back to her quarters, her mind a jumble of emotions and thoughts, she missed the man leaning by the tree on her path.

"Is Mirian suffering from a heartbreak?" Ryder’s voice carried a tinge of amusement as he pushed himself off the tree trunk, walking towards her. "You and your suitor are quite...popular now. You’re a wealthy little omega, so why are you still wearing a long face instead of a luxury dress?"

Mirian’s gaze narrowed slightly, her eyes flashing with a hint of irritation. "Mind your own business, Ryder," she snapped.

Ryder chuckled, unamused. "Oh? Unfortunately, this is my business, little omega. You’re making my Luna sad. And secondly, those two idiots are having a brawl because of you. What happens if one kills the other? My Luna will have to clean up your mess. And that, I cannot stand to watch."

Mirian’s irritation flared up, her face heating with annoyance. "I’m not making anyone sad, Ryder, and I can handle my own messes," she snapped.

Ryder’s grin never wavered, but his eyes gleamed with wickedness. "Really? Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’re caught in the middle of a whole lot of trouble."

Mirian’s hands clenched into fists at her sides, her anger simmering just below the surface. She knew Ryder wasn’t wrong, but she didn’t need him pointing it out. But suddenly, she froze. Her head snapped to Ryder.

"Y– you, what did you say about people having a brawl because of me? Who?" she’d missed that part out of anger.

Ryder clicked tongue while shaking his head. "Tsk. tsk. tsk. What do they even see in you? So unintelligent."

"Tell me, Ryder!"

Ryder grinned, and he seemed to reconsider his approach. "Fine, fine," he said, holding up his hands in a gesture of surrender. "Marcus and Detroit. Their wolves are tearing each other down. One wants the other to reject you. Apparently, they’re both very... invested in you."

’Oh Detroit!’ Mirian cried in her heart.

She was frustrated and scared for those two. "Where are they fighting?" she demanded, panic rising to the surface.

Ryder shook his head, "It’s still too early to break them apart. Give them some time."

Mirian’s eyes widened in alarm, and she took a step forward, her heart racing with worry. "No, I need to stop them," she said, her voice firm.

"Oh? But I’m not interested in stopping the fight."

"Ryder, please. You already said that one of them killing the other would cause the Luna–"

"I never said I’d wait until one killed the other." He sighed, "Relax your tensed muscles. They both deserve some beating. If only I could do it myself."

He clearly warned Detroit and Marcus to not annoy his Luna. Yet, they couldn’t take their fight to the woods, outside the pack. For that reason, they both deserve some good beating.

She grabbed his bare arm, shaking it as she pleaded, tears welling up in her eyes. "Ryder, please, tell me where they are!"

Ryder stiffened, his gaze drifting to her hand that was on his and his eyes flashed with warning. Mirian suddenly felt a surge of fear as his temperature shifted, his expression transforming into something deadly and evil. She quickly released his arm, her hands trembling slightly as she took a step back.

She looked down at her trembling hands and her panic rose higher, the sound of her heartbeat echoing in her ears. "Wh– what is–"

"Old oak tree," he said gruffly, preventing her from asking questions he had no interest in answering. "Near the training grounds. But be warned."

Without waiting for her to speak, he walked away, heading to the servant quarters. His mood was ruined.

Ryder didn’t like to be touched. His body didn’t react well with surprised body contact – Reana was an exception.

Had Mirian not swiftly let go, she would have seen a side of Ryder that would have traumatized her. Or even killed her.

Mirian watched him go, still shaken by the sudden shift in his demeanor. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart, and glanced in the direction of the old oak tree.

Her worry for Marcus and Detroit pushed her fear for Ryder aside, and she hastened towards the training grounds, her footsteps quick and urgent.

As she ran, she couldn’t help but wonder what had caused Ryder’s reaction, and what lay beneath the surface of his usual teasing facade. But for now, she had to focus on stopping the fight between Marcus and Detroit.

...

"Ryder," called Ophilia. She smiled shyly, lowered her head and began walking in Ryder’s direction.

The young servant, beautiful with a nicely shaped oval face, small lips, and almond-shaped eyes, quickened her pace to catch up with Ryder.

Ryder’s gaze flicked to her, his expression cold and unwelcoming. Ophilia’s smile faltered, and she hesitated, her eyes darting nervously to Ryder’s face.

"I– I was looking for you," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ryder’s gaze lingered on her for a moment before he nodded curtly. "What do you want?" His tone was detached, his eyes already dismissing her.

Ophilia’s face fell, but she pressed on, her voice trembling slightly. "I – we need help with some tasks. We were wondering if you could assist."

Ryder’s expression didn’t change, "With what?" he asked gruffly, his tone uninviting.

Ophilia swallowed hard, her eyes darting up to meet Ryder’s gaze before quickly looking away, shiver running down her spine – he looked so intimidating and scary that Ophilia almost cried.
