Chapter 38: Episode 5.3 Talks before Dawn
Chapter 38: Episode 5.3 Talks before Dawn
Shen Yuan went home very late—too late that he found himself waltzing into their lightless kitchen at three in the morning to grab something to drink and hydrate his drying throat. The faint refrigerator light hit the tired face of the omega as he took a so-called one hundred percent real orange juice in a one-liter tetra pack. He isn’t sure how much of that was true. He is too tired, thirsty, and lazy to care about the secrets hidden by modern-day capitalism.
His mind is about to collapse after all the tossings he did for tonight.
The celestial fox spirit is tired. Right after the interrogation concluded, he sent Gu Jinpeng and Assistant Su to the private clinic owned by the Baihu Guild for treatment. Then, right after that, he dropped by the assassin’s apartment to get the information he needed in a hidden hard drive. He handed the storage device to Xiao Rong and instructed her that he wanted the identity of the asshole mastermind before sunset.
He didn’t expect that his initially free-spirited night excursion would entail much action. It was physically, mentally, and emotionally draining for him.
Shen Yuan was ready to vent his tired spirit and drink all the juice’s contents straight from the container when suddenly...
"You are late."
"Oh, Shit!" Shen Yuan accidentally made the juice box from his hand because he was startled. It was supposed to spill on his black shirt, but thankfully, his waning mental alertness awakened, enabling his quick hand to grab the container before tragedy struck.
He sharply turned his head to face Bai Tingfeng, standing at the kitchen’s entrance.
"You almost got me there," he said, his lips crooked and his eyes throwing daggers at the alpha male.
"I didn’t mean to startle you. I thought you had a sharp sense after you awakened," the alpha casually responded as he headed towards the cupboard and pulled out a bottle of premium coffee beans.
"He is getting a coffee? Is he pulling an all-nighter?" a small part of the fox spirit’s mind couldn’t help but note.
Since the incident, the man has been working at home. Most of the time, he was closed off in the study room or making conference calls in the receiving area, where the expansive front garden and the artificial lake were seen through the floor-to-ceiling glass wall.
So, it is not surprising that the alpha male is working late. As far as he knows, Bai Tingfeng oversees all the guild operations as its guild master— on top of being an active hunter himself.
Handsome, hot, and responsible. Shen Yuan couldn’t think of a way this man managed to be an excellent and hands-on father with how many duties he was juggling in his two hands.
Now that he thinks of it. Bai Tingfeng in the Manhua is also handsome, hot, and responsible— well, not that responsible with how he handles his relationship with Lei Jireh because trustworthy person wouldn’t fuck their partner at night then would proceed on treating them as air when the morning comes.
But now... Shen Yuan shamelessly studied the side face of the alpha male as he quietly put the coffee beans in the coffee maker.
"You seemed like a heart-flatterer romantic male lead in fluffy BL manhwa now. What a handsome change."
Crack!
The sound of splattering glass sounded when the coffee jar slipped from Bai Tingfeng’s hand.
"W-what did you say?" The sharp facial features of the alpha were suddenly shrouded with pink mist. "Hey! I was just pointing out your tardiness. Why are you suddenly spouting some..."
The stern, baritone voice of the man became quieter and quieter until he finally stopped. Silence enveloped the two of them, and that was when Shen Yuan made a blunder of exposing his thoughts!
He faked his calm. While deep in his mind, he is already twisting his fox ears and pulling them to opposite ends. "Pardon my nonsense. I am just too tired to think clearly, you see. I’m going to hit the bed after this."
The alpha male’s expression turned like an old pot’s bottom.
"Not without showering. You reek of something burnt," Bai Tingfeng thoughtlessly answered, making Shen Yuan look at him while the omega gulped his orange juice.
"So, you knew," the celestial fox spirit said with certainty.
"I didn’t ask for it. Assistant Su just gave me a rundown of what happened and ended up hearing it without really intending it."
Shen Yuan didn’t detect any falsehood in Bai Tingfeng’s statement. From his tone, word choices, and even the flickering of his eyes, Bai Tingfeng is genuine in his explanation.
Shen Yuan cheekily smirked, "That’s okay, Bai Tingfeng. I intended to snap a selfie, too. Just to give you a sneak peek of what’s to come once you cooperate with me. Unfortunately, I for—"
"You didn’t bring your phone."
Shen Yuan looked weirdly at the serious-faced male and was on the verge of asking, "How did you know that?" but in the end, he just opted to say," Yeah, I think I may have accidentally pushed it under the pillow when I am making Yanyan sleep earlier. Did you find it? I hope you took the initiative to charge it because that might be drained of battery if you didn’t."
"No, I didn’t even see it." Bai Tingfeng cleared his throat as if to push back the words he was supposed to say. "Anyway, I just knew you didn’t have your phone because Assistant Su forwarded me the information about the mastermind."
"That fast?"
The alpha nodded while not tearing his eyes away from the wide-eyed and gaping omega.
"Don’t look at me like that. I didn’t bully your employees! I gave Xiao Rong more than twelve hours to get the job done so that she would have time to rest or do other jobs she needed to do."
"Xiao Rong is the capable head of our guild’s cyber security, and with a complete IP address, it wouldn’t take a half hour for her to locate and pull up the user’s identity."
Shen Yuan tossed away his tired spirit, casually grabbed a swivel bar stool, and sat facing Bai Tingfeng.
"So, who was it?" Shen Yuan asked, revealing a mischievous, lopsided smile at the alpha. He even subconsciously leaned his body forward— that is how excited he was to unmask the insolent human who tried to smear mud on his pride as the nine-tailed fox.
Bai Tingfeng silently gave his phone to Shen Yuan, and coincidentally, the coffee maker was finished brewing Bai Tingfeng’s coffee.
The aromatic scent of freshly brewed coffee dominated the atmosphere of the kitchen. It was then followed by the rhythmic sound of stirring coffee— a pleasant and cozy sound.
However, it was suddenly disturbed by a crispy, hot, yet ironically sophisticated cursing of Shen Yuan. "This mother fucking, ass-licking dog!"
"Never say any of those words in front of our son," Bai Tingfeng calmly sipped his coffee in the face of the triggered omega. The clean features of Shen Yuan distorted into a cute wild cat ready to pounce and tear certain someone’s throat.
He expected that much reaction from Shen Yuan. Even when he first saw it, he felt indescribable anger toward the man behind that half-hearted shooting. That’s why he decided to come down and sip a coffee to calm his emotions before he breaks this news to Shen Yuan once he comes home. Coincidentally, the omega was earlier than he expected.
"I don’t need coffee to calm down..." Bai Tingfeng told himself.
Meanwhile, Shen Yuan wanted to bash his head on the countertop because the person who sent the damned bullet on his way was someone who already made his annoying presence known! He just overlooked him because he was poorly insignificant in the manhua.
"What’s the deal with this Zhou Kai anyway? First, he sent that annoying petition to expose me for hyping myself up by claiming that I am "unofficially" an S Class awakener, whereas I never said it myself, nor did I post it on social media!" Shen Yuan angrily emphasized his words to prove a strong point.
"I didn’t spare him a bit of my attention because he was just some passing side villain, but it seems like he took that as a sign to further mess with me!"
Bai Tingfeng silently agreed. "I don’t know him personally, but I saw him at a function I attended and briefly interacted with him. Zhou Kai has the air of an extreme alpha supremacist that is very hard to miss."
"That’s not just about his air, Bai Tingfeng," Shen Yuan sharply corrected. "He is a through and through alpha supremacist and a sore loser who has a twisted manifestation of personality complex!"
Zhou Kai in the manhua was a brainless cannon-feeder villain who hated Bai TIngfeng for being popular among women and omega following his highly publicized separation from Shen Yuan.
As the ultimate cannon feeder, he staged a few failed attempts to mess with Bai Tingfeng inside the dungeon until the Hunter Association caught him, stripped off license as a hunter, and detained him in their facility.
It was supposedly Bai TIngfeng who gained the attention of this annoying good-for-nothing villain, not him! Shen Yuan wasn’t supposed to receive this much angst!
Bai Tingfeng watched as the angry omega became silent, and when Shen Yuan opened his mouth, he was shocked at the words that came out of his mouth.
"I think we should consider divorcing now, Bai Tingfeng."
