Chapter 293: Episode 27.4 Miasma Problem
"So, what’s the latest news about our latest prisoner in Diyu?" Shen Yuan immediately asked upon entering the observation room of the occupied high-security containment cell of Diyu.
His long legs took big, elegant steps towards the two alphas waiting for him. The people who are the most involved in dealing with the cardinal-related work these days.
Mao Huanlong, the chairman of the Hunter Association and Shen Yuan’s boss, and Admiral Wu Jin, a fellow S-class awakener, are standing in front of a thick fibreglass that separates the containment cell and observation room. Both turned their heads towards Shen Yuan almost at the same time.
"Same old condition from three days ago," Chairman Mao flatly replied, turning his head to look at Shen Yuan. He momentarily paused and raised his eyebrow at the omega. "You... How come your skin and hair looked better and more nourished than it was in our last meeting?"
Shen Yuan meaningfully smiled. Shall he admit that his gardener watered his fields before coming here? No way, he would rather keep that to himself so he could keep the fuzzy feeling in his heart for a longer time.
"Hmmm. Probably because I am full of mana?" Shen Yuan confidently stopped before the two alphas and smiled cockily as he blatantly sized them up. "Seems like your schedules aren’t treating you right. A pound of eyebags grew from each of you since the last time we met."
Chairman Mao heaved a deep sigh and rolled his eyes. Admiral Wu was helpless.
Both of them had hectic schedules these days. Especially after they retrieved the beaten cardinal whom Shen Yuan left in the dumpster.
"Tell me about it," Chairman Mao deadpanned, "I lost count of how many meetings I attended. The damned prime minister is pressuring me to squeeze information out of the captured cardinal."
The old chairman scrunched his face as he pointed at the mysterious silhouette behind the thick fibreglass. The white cat mask is barely visible through the black gas lingering.
"But how am I supposed to do that when the person in question is like that?! He’s been in a coma for three days. We have no way to check on his condition, treat his injuries, and get his identity all because of these black fumes oozing from his body! How are we supposed to go near him when that black smoke siphons our vitality, slowly killing us?"
Shen Yuan hummed and looked at the S-class necromancer whom he did his best to capture. His foxlike eyes lingered on the ominous dark fumes hovering around the bed of the unconscious necromancer.
Danger and dread. Shen Yuan could feel those feelings crawling under his skin despite the thick glass wall. Any living thing will automatically run away from the black smoke Chairman Mao was talking about.
Others may not know what it is, but the celestial fox spirit was knowledgeable enough to identify it.
"That’s miasma, Chairman Mao. That is the tangible form of condensed death energy. It will kill any living thing that touches it, but it is actually nourishment for necromancers like that bitch. The fact that it’s lingering around him like this means that he is recovering."
"But how curious, only true nekomata can summon miasma to treat themselves. How could a human be able to..."
The celestial fox spirit smirked in disgust. He didn’t expect that the bitch of a cardinal has such a trick under his sleeves. He thought that the pink-haired omega was just a lucky nekomata-wannabe who was lucky enough to receive the powers of the nekomata. However, he was wrong.
Like his husband, Bai Tingfeng, the cardinal has a strong compatibility with the spirit who blessed him. That’s the only explanation he can come up with for the unexpected presence of miasma.
But since when did the miasma appear?
Well, answering that question takes them back to the incident three days ago.
Chairman Mao took the beaten necromancer into custody— just like Shen Yuan planned. However, the entire process couldn’t be called a smooth sailing affair since it was mired with little difficulties here and there. First, Chairman Mao found it challenging to deal with the barrier that Shen Yuan put up. He was confident that he could destroy it with one hit. However, he is not sure that the unconscious villain will stay unscathed after that.
They needed to capture the S-class necromancer alive to squeeze information out of him. They must not mince him to bits using the sharp wind blades of an S-class mage.
Thus, Chairman Mao dealt with the situation with caution.
For 10 minutes, the old chairman studied how to effectively break through Shen Yuan’s barrier, and his efforts paid off because, after one try, he successfully broke the protective talisman without chopping a single strand of the necromancer’s hair.
The problem should be gone after that. But little did Chairman Mao know that the dilemma was just starting.
Chairman Mao instructed three properly geared and armoured agents to get the beaten terrorist. However, the moment these three agents approached the injured villain, the entire person suddenly convulsed and started leaking the black miasma from their body.
Everyone was caught off-guard, especially the three agents. They failed to move away from the creeping gas. Several parts of their body were leaked by the ominous gas, and their body instantly showed signs of aging— skin and flesh became visibly dry and wrinkled until they looked like dry tree branches. In an instant, the vitality from their exposed body parts was stolen at such an astonishing speed.
If it weren’t for Chairman Mao’s timely save, all three of them would lose their lives, breaking the zero fatality record the Hunter Association is boasting.
The threat of miasma was showcased flamboyantly. This is why they are in this situation where the hateful necromancer is isolated in a heavily guarded and enclosed room.
With Xia Jinhai abroad, Admiral Wu Jin, who was known for his invincible defensive abilities, was tasked to watch over their only S-class prisoner.
"You seem to be knowledgeable about miasma. Do you have any method to make it go away? With your fire, I think you’re able to remove it." Admiral Wu Jin said. As a navy, he was more used to being in action rather than watching over prisoners. If he can, he wants to excuse himself from monitoring duties as early as possible!
It’s a pity that he’s bound to be disappointed.
"Well, I do have a way to make the leaking miasma go away, but..." Shen Yuan and Chairman Mao exchanged knowing looks. The pair, who are usually bantering, is showing exceptional connection with each other— they just give a look, and that’s already their conversation.
"We will not rely on Shen Yuan’s flame this time. We want to keep the cardinal alive."
Admiral Wu Jin gave the two a confused look.
Shen Yuan sighed before providing an explanation. "While Heavenly Foxfire is strong enough to purify the leaking miasma, it doesn’t fundamentally solve the problem. We need to go deeper into the origin of the miasma. Which means I need to purify the necromancer’s body."
"And that is a problem because..." Admiral Wu Jin.
"It is a problem because death energy is intricately linked with the bitch’s mana reserves and spirit. Once I touched the death energy, there’s no saying what could possibly happen to our dear sleeping beauty. Maybe he will be forced to eternal slumber, never to speak about the teas within the Cardinal. Or worse, his mana goes berserk, killing him on the spot." Shen Yuan explained 0like it’s not his business. Well, it really isn’t because he’s not interested in what’s going to happen with an enemy he has already beaten.
"The chances of any positive outcomes are abysmal because remember, the mana flowing inside that person’s body is irregularly thanks to the Mage Killer blade that stabbed him."
Chairman Mao sighed exasperatedly, "We don’t have any choice but to do this obnoxious waiting game."
Admiral Wu Jin inhaled sharply, "The Cardinals were probably saying; "You just can’t have your cake and eat it."
The atmosphere instantly became gloomy among the three S-class awakeners.
However, Shen Yuan is not here to do a pity party with these alphas. He clapped his hand, dispelling the blue veil hanging on people’s faces. "Well, it’s not up to them how we treat this sleeping kitty that they sent to us. We may not be able to squeeze information out of an unconscious prisoner, but we can at least uncover their identities."
Chairman Mao and Admiral Wu Jin whipped their heads towards the omega. It has to be said that they tried multiple times to remove the mask covering the cardinal’s face and take DNA samples but all of them fell through.
The tools they use all mysteriously break during their attempts. It is unknown if it is caused by the miasma or something else.
Necromancy and death energy are very tricky for these first-timers.
Stuck, the alphas had no other choice but to rely on the omega even though this part of the investigation was supposed to be their responsibility.
"How?"
"I might need to work harder," Shen Yuan said, winking at the two.
Moments later, the three S-class awakeners are inside the containment cell wearing sterilized gowns out of consideration for the patient’s wound that’s currently treated by death energy.
Shen Yuan stood beside the bed, a meter away from miasma. "I will try to destroy the cat mask your patient is wearing using my fire."
