Chapter 264: Episode 24.5 Bai Tingfeng’s Past
"I don’t care if my father-in-law thinks that Fengfeng has the potential to be the most powerful swordmaster in the genealogy of the Bai family. Screw that, okay? This intensive training needs to stop," Rong Suyin angrily told his husband, Bai Weisheng.
Months after Bai Tingfeng awakened with an S-class power, the entire Bai family was boiling with mixed emotions. They are happy that they have a child who has a bright future and is strong enough to fend off potential attackers. However, it comes with the reminder that Bai Tingfeng had to acclimatize with his powers— in other words, train more.
Rong Suyin gave his full support since training one’s power is a must for new awakeners, but as it went on, he no longer liked how intense it was.
"Sparring with tamed beasts is okay since they could be stopped at command, but now I hear my son will be camping alone in the forest?" Poise was gone, and emotions were roaring. Rong Suyin pointed his index fingers to his husband’s face, seething. "No way in hell I will let my nine-year-old son stay in that forest crawling with vicious animals. We need to talk to father about that."
Bai Weisheng sighed, "I did talk to him about it since Tingfeng is way too young to follow the usual training regimen of the Bai family, but he was too stubborn. He’s obstinate in keeping family traditions."
Bai Weisheng is also angry at his father for putting his precious son in harm’s way. However, he respected his father greatly, and he couldn’t openly show strong defiance to the family head.
"I will insist on holding off the camping training until he’s fifteen. I think that’s acceptable enough for Father, as I did it at the same age."
Rong Suyin hesitated, "That’s such a long time... Do you think father-in-law will compromise?"
"I will threaten to break away from the family if he doesn’t," Bai Weisheng said firmly. He’s the father and the alpha of his family. He must protect his son and husband and do it at all costs, even if it will hurt him.
Threats are fired, and relationships suffer irreparable cracks.
Internal disputes within prominent families are as messy as anyone imagined, and the one who stands firm in the end is the one who controls the resources. Grandpa Mao pulled some strings to make the couple miserably occupied so he could take Bai Tingfeng when the time came.
The dreaded camping training happened. Bai Weisheng and Rong Suyin failed.
"The power you possess, Tingfeng, makes you a full-grown tiger. As a proud member of the Bai family, you must learn how to live in a place with constant peril because that is the only way to become stronger. That is how tigers dominate. That is how the warrior spirit of Baihu became unparalleled," Grandpa Bai told his nine-year-old grandson before he left the forest.
There was no hesitation in his cold eyes. In his head, he firmly believes that this is the best, and besides, it isn’t like he’s living the child without rations.
Nine-year-old Bai Tingfeng has a lot of ready-to-eat packs in his bag. It is enough for three-day camping.
Grandpa Bai thought he was thoughtful by providing all these things, but at this moment, young Bai Tingfeng only wanted familial compassion.
"Grandpa, I-I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can do it," Bai Tingfeng said, teary-eyed.
Unfortunately, his pleas were only met with tightened jaws and a sharp glare, "You can. The strong blessings of the Baihu reside inside you. You just need to awaken it."
And Grandpa Bai left him in the wilderness without looking back.
Bai Tingfeng stayed the entire first day, settling in the frightening forest with fear constantly looming on his back. He couldn’t eat properly for fear that the smell of food would attract the nearby predatory animals.
At night, he almost clings desperately to the campfire to stave off the coldness that’s creeping on his skin. The survival lessons he learned growing up didn’t help him from feeling lonely and vulnerable.
Bai Tingfeng was young.
The high-quality sword hanging on his waist didn’t give any feelings of comfort at all because, at the end of the day, wild animals will not avoid you just because you have several thousand yuan Mythril-mixed steel sword.
"Arghhhh!" Bai Tingfeng desperately swung his sword at the pack of wolves that ambushed him.
Throughout the second day, nine-year-old Bai Tingfeng was stalked by a massive group of wild wolves. He tried to create a barricade around the tent built for him, but what good would that be before hungry predators?
Night came, and that was the time when his lurkers staged their attacks.
"Go away!" Bai Tingfeng roared as he brandished his white aura sword. Ideally, these normal wild wolves should pose no threats to his S-class powers.
But his situation is less than ideal. He’s in an unfamiliar place. The tall trees and broad, clustered, leafy shades stopped the moonlight from illuminating the location he was in. He hadn’t had the time to rest properly ever since he arrived.
He’s tired, super tired.
Everything seems to be working against him. Despair is closing on him.
"Argh! Don’t come near me!" Young Bai Tingfeng was overwhelmed with emotions that he shouldn’t have felt at the tender age of nine, and it was one of his emotional outbursts that caused him to blackout while fighting.
That was the first time he experienced total darkness. It was chilly and eerie. He didn’t like it one bit.
At that time, Bai Tingfeng didn’t realize he lost complete control over his body. It was the first time Blood Curse made its presence known in his life. He didn’t know that his entire body became covered with black stripes resembling a tiger, and his eyes glared with fearsome golden light.
All he knew was that he needed to save himself from the pack of angry wolves and shake off the frightening darkness that consumed him.
"Stop!" Young Bai Tingfeng screamed repeatedly like a chant. His desperation is growing every time he said the damned word.
And it worked— or so he believed because he seemed to hear it from a distance. It could be his voice resonating with his will or someone else here to save him. It’s a pity he didn’t have the time to ponder as his emotions were running amok, and when he finally regained consciousness, the first thing he saw before him was the familiar forest he hated.
However, something has changed, and it is impossible to miss it because it’s all over him.
"W-what happened here?" Young Bai Tingfeng’s immature voice was shaking.
How could he not when everything around him fits the description of carnage?
Broken parts of his sword are plunged into the soil. The trees around him were razed to the ground. The earth is filled with blood and flesh, giving off a dizzying smell.
Young Bai Tingfeng need not think deeply about where the rancid blood came from. The pack of wolves is already gone, and that realization throws him into panic, narrowing his vision.
"D-Did I do this?" The nine-year-old asked in a shaky breath. The hilt of his broken sword hit the ground with a soft thump as he accidentally let it go due to his strength leaving his body.
He trudged through the sticky red pool around him, and not far from him, he’d seen another despair-inducing sight.
"Xiaojun?" He uttered weakly.
A big black shadow panther is lying miserably under a destroyed tree. Its entire body is drenched with fresh blood, but he is familiar with the beast since it’s one of the beast guards following his dad. It is also his beast sparring partner.
"Meow," It mewled weakly. Its bright eyes that show its intelligence slowly dimming.
"No! No! D- Did I do this to you too?" Young Bai Tingfeng’s tears burst like a dam. "W-where is Daddy? He should be around since you’re here! We need to send you to the vet! We—"
A realization hit him like a charging bulldozer. The voice telling "stop" that he thought to be his imagination and the shadow panther’s presence indicated that his Daddy was here.
"Daddy?" Young Bai Tingfeng called desperately. His heart bows as he searches for his Dad’s figure.
He had to find his Daddy.
Why is his Daddy not answering?
Panic and desperation almost choked Bai Tingfeng when he finally saw tracks where his father should be. It is a shallow, narrow cavity on the ground. Unlike the others that appear to be created by a powerful slash of sword, this one seemed to be made by something forcefully pushed away.
With his short, weakening legs, Bai Tingfeng clumsily followed, and once he saw the end of the shallow ditch, his heart immediately dropped.
"No way..." Young Bai Tingfeng felt like his world was crushing for the first time. His eyes trembled as they reflected his unconscious Dad, Rong Suyin, bloodied and sprawling lifelessly on the ground. "What did I do? Daddy!"
~~~
"I don’t know what to say, Bai Tingfeng," Shen Yuan speechlessly leaned on the headboard of their bed as Bai Tingfeng finished recounting his past.
At this moment, the celestial fox spirit’s heart is aching for Bai Tingfeng. He never had such intense desire to console someone until now— and right now, he just wanted to hold the big alpha man before him in his arms.
