Chapter 164: Episode 14.7 The Favorite
Pak!
A crisp sound of slap resonated. Shen Linyu was looking at his father, eyes wide, cheek red and swelling, and asking himself why his father’s palms hit him straight in the face.
He was having a hectic day in the office when he received a call from Shen Zhaohui. It was a rare occurrence that his father would contact him personally, so when this happened, he canceled the entire schedule he had the entire day and went straight to the Shen Mansion.
Shen Linyu could still remember the smugness he felt a while ago because he thought his father would praise him because his scheme seemed effective. Just a little nudge, and he’s sure that Shen Yuan will come rolling back to them, having no choice but to do what they planned to do to expand their family’s company.
But why is he being slapped right now? His father didn’t give him time to sit on the couch.
"Linyu, my son, can you tell me what I ordered you to do?" Shen Zhaohui apathetically gazed at his pained and confused son. It didn’t matter to him if the right cheek of his eldest was showing signs of bruising. He’s just stood in their home’s expansive hall, angry.
"You told me to make Shen Yuan give up his seat, Father," Shen Linyu sounded as if drawing his every word as everything started to sink in.
"A-And I did just that. I researched what happened in the Taiyuan Ice Dungeon and found something that could be considered his weakness. It was his fault that he mistreated those hunters. Father, I just use that to our advantage!" the tall alpha male reasoned out.
By the gleam of his eyes and his confident hand gestures as he talked, it was evident that he was convinced that he had done nothing wrong and everything went according to his plan.
"Just think about it, father. Since he’s been reported for abuse of power as a government official, Shen Yuan will most likely be dismissed from whatever his position in the Hunter Association! That’s way easier than attacking the Hunter Association. We—"
Pak! Pak!
Once again, Shen Zhaohui’s hand lashed like a whip towards Shen Linyu. His jaws were clenched, showing a scary bump that only appears when he’s fed up.
The Shen Mansion was made of marble walls, so the sound of the cheeks and palms echoed.
Shen Linyu’s head was shaken. Like a fly beaten by a fly swatter, he pathetically dropped on the ground knee first.
"Father..."
"Did you know that’s why I told you to focus on the Hunter Association instead of your brother?" Shen Zhaohui’s ruthless reprimanding started.
"It was because I could see that Chairman Mao liked your younger brother. Chairman Mao is known for being stubborn. Once he sees something, he will do whatever it takes to get it, and if it’s already in his hand, he doesn’t mind butting heads with the higher-ups just to keep it."
"And right now, Yuan is his favorite. How much of a rascal Yuan is in his job doesn’t matter. As long as his strength could produce good results like what happened in the Taiyuan Ice Dungeon, Chairman Mao would be thrilled to act deaf and blind!"
"The stupid issue you uncovered would only be good in tabloid newspaper sales, Shen Linyu!"
"Shen Yuan..." Shen Linyu uttered under his breath. The fires of hate were especially scorching the younger alpha’s eyes.
What’s with that cursed omega that he gained all the favor of everyone around him? He couldn’t understand why a selfish person who only did what he pleased was well-liked.
Shen Linyu’s heart felt like rats were gnawing at it.
"But father, even if we exposed the dark side of the Hunter Association, Yuan declared in his broadcast that he’ll stick around. You know how stubborn he is, too. Remember when he went abroad?"
"You said that once he left the country, you would erase his name from all of the family property, but instead of listening to you, he blocked your contacts, and throughout five years, he never spoke to you. Nothing could change his mind once he’s decided!"
"You seemed to understand your brother well," Shen Zhaohui remained unwavering. "Then you should have known that he inherited my opportunistic tendencies. Just like me, Yuan wouldn’t do anything useless for him. He wouldn’t stay in a place where that only hurts his reputation."
Shen Linyu flinched. His father is once again comparing himself to Shen Yuan. How ironic is it that Shen Zhaohui keeps saying that his omega son is his greatest disappointment, yet he can’t stop gushing about how they sport identical traits as father and son?
Deep inside, Shen Linyu knows that Shen Zhaohui’s favorite was his prodigal omega son, not him, the eldest yet illegitimate alpha son.
He may have inherited his father’s dark gray hair and all the definitive features, but that was never enough for his father to look at him.
Weakly, he stood up.
"Did you know that Yuan accepted an advertisement deal with Madam Zhen’s Red Anvil?" Shen Zhaohui raised his eyebrow at his eldest son. Seeing an alpha pathetically kneeling on the ground, discontent again crept into his system.
This son of his was really born to be his life’s regret—the reminder of his sin and the rift that opened up distance between his relationship with Shanyuan.
But no matter how discontent he was with this child, he’s got no choice but to take him in, for he’s a real Shen by blood.
"If you only delve deeper into your brother’s affairs, you would know that Yuan still values the big revenue and connections modeling provides. Now, compare that to everything Hunter Association provides. Based on Shen Yuan that we know of, which do you think Shen Yuan would keep once the public lambasts the Hunter Association for the dirt that you are supposed to expose? His lowly position in the Hunter Association or upright image that gives him a fortune?"
"Linyu, you blew everything out of proportion. Now, the only thing you should do is pray that Shen Yuan won’t catch wind of what you did," Shen Zhaohui turned his back from his son. "Because if he did learn about your little stunt, then you better get ready. He’s way better than you in exacting his revenge. That’s the only lesson from me that he applied in his life."
Shen Linyu was left watching his father retreat. He lost count of how many times he saw this in his life.
"For the Nth time, he concluded our conversation by speaking about Shen Yuan. Will there ever be a time when the conversation ends with my achievements?" Shen Linyu clenched his fist. Sadness and anger were swirling around his eyes.
"What makes me lesser than Shen Yuan? I am the fucking alpha!"

Outside the Shen Mansion, several cars stopped in front of the gate. Its windows are tinted heavily black, so the gates’s guard doesn’t know who the visitors are.
It was four in the afternoon, and there was no memo from the main house that distinguished people would be coming at the said time.
The guard politely spoke through the intercom, "Esteemed guest, can you roll down your windows and kindly state your identity and the purpose of your visit?"
The first white car slowly rolled down its side window, and a beautiful young man with striking platinum-blonde hair appeared. He looked cool and stylish with black wayfarers perfectly seated on his fine, smooth nose bridge.
With his side profile, one would think he’s a big-name celebrity.
And he is because it’s the one and only Shen Yuan.
"Y-Young Master Yuan, you’re finally home!" The guard immediately recognized the omega through the installed camera. He was a long-time employee of the Shen Mansion; thus, it’s only natural that he knows the attitude of the youngest son of their master.
The Shen Yuan that he knows abhorred waiting. And even though he’s considerably kinder to the other Shens in the mansion, Shen Yuan often lashes his sharp tongue to slackers who waste his time. Most of them ended up getting fired.
He’s the only one who lasts because he’s cautious in his job. And he intended to keep it that way.
"P-Please let me open the gates for you!"
"No, don’t," To his surprise, Shen Yuan made him stop before he could even press the control for the steel gates.
"Huh?"
"Just ensure that no living things are standing around the gate."
What did Young Master Yuan intend to do?
The guard was utterly confused at this weird demand, but before he could say anything, he saw through the CCTV that Shen Yuan had gotten out of the car, followed by Bai Tingfeng, Rong Suyin, and two scary feline monsters.
"Holy shit," He has no idea what is about to happen, but a bad feeling crept down his spine.
"You see, I’m furious right now, so I need to vent on something," Shen Yuan arrogantly said. There’s a bluish-white fireball hovering in his right hand. "I just hope my dear father has no sentimental feeling over his magnificent steel gate."
"Y-Young Master Yuan. P-Please calm down—"
The guard was panicking in his post. However, even if he begged with his life on the line, an ear-splitting explosion beat him to it.
That day, when the sun is about to set. The Shen Mansion experienced an earthquake that’s only meant for them.
All thanks to Shen Yuan.
