Chapter 115: Episode 10.5 Special Counterterrorist Task Force
Hunter Association’s Special Counterterrorist Task Force or SCTTF. That is what Chairman Mao calls this newly organized group of talented individuals combatting the threats of the rising global terrorist group called the Cardinals.
This information was presently kept from the media for the time being to avoid unnecessary panic from the public.
Seven powerful individuals spearheaded the SCTTF. Each of them plays an important role in combatting and weakening the influence of the Cardinals in the country.
First on the list was Admiral Wu Jin. A young yet talented official in Country C’s navy who was fabled as the Guardian of the Eastern Seas.
Due to his bloodline that belongs to the Black Tortoise, he’s an S-Class tank-type awakener who rules over the water and is said to be capable of using sky-high waves as his shield and armor.
Chairman Mao assigned him to monitor the sea borders of Country C.
Based on the information that the Hunter Association milked from the individuals that Shen Yuan caught, the Cardinals have a massive smuggling scheme in the seaboards of the country.
The firearms, weapons, and dungeon materials that come from this illegal ring contribute significantly to their finances and their operation as a terrorist group.
And Admiral Wu Jin’s mission was to cripple that aspect and weaken their operation ultimately.
The second member is Xia Jinhai. He’s an S-Class esper-type awakener with a monstrous psychokinesis ability, capable of manipulating things to their molecular level. He currently works as the department head of Hunter Association’s Intelligence Department and now.
He’s the main person involved in investigating all the Cardinals.
The third talented individual that Chairman Mao recruited was Mo Zhu. An A-Class awakener came from the prestigious Mo Family because of the blood blessing granted to them by the Vermillion Bird. He’s a versatile mage-type awakener who could fight using the fire and heal others using the phoenix’s crimson flame.
He’s an experienced manager working around the affairs of the dungeon industry, so Chairman Mao instructed him to guard the dungeons all over the country strictly.
This is because Gao Qiang, or as Shen Yuan called him, Haichong, could use summoned insects despite him not being documented as an S-Class awakener in the country.
It won’t be a stretch to assume that the Cardinals must have access to dungeons that the Hunter Association hasn’t documented yet.
Possessing one dungeon boosts their economy and, at the same time, makes their members stronger.
Mo Zhu’s mission was to find it and report it to Chairman Mao to snatch this advantage away from them. That is on top of being the support and nominated medical personnel for the SCTTF once a massive stand-off happened between the members and the Cardinals.
Fourth was Lai Quan, a young but veteran mercenary-hunter. He’s an A-Class talented marksman who can manipulate and fire at most four different firearms at the same time. It’s close to psychokinesis. However, it is solely applicable for weapons, and he can coat his bullets with mana to reinforce their toughness, making it possible for the bullets to work on the tough skins of the monsters from the dungeon.
Chairman Mao didn’t scout him for his marksmanship skills or experience as a mercenary.
He’s exceptionally great at espionage and has a connection in the underworld. Someone that Chairman Mao thought they needed for the team.
Lai Quan’s goal was to penetrate the inner circle of the cardinals and cooperate with other members in providing the intel he found.
Since the Special Counterrorism Task Force is a cooperation of various government agencies, the fifth and sixth members of the SCTTF are representatives of the Phantom Leo Unit of the Armed Police Force.
Major General Zhao An and Colonel Dai Jie belong to the unit that deals with counterterrorism. Their function in the SCTTF is to deal with the insurgents affiliated with the cardinals.
And the seventh but not the least, Shen Yuan.
"I can’t believe I’m studying these documents late at night!" the platinum-haired omega couldn’t help but raise his voice. "I should have known that when Chairman Mao said that I’ll be the main force of the SCTTF, it means that I’ll be doing mountains of work, god damn it!"
He’s currently in their home’s study room. With mountains of papers that contained all the information he needed to familiarize himself with as an agent of the Hunter Association.
Actually, the contents he’s reading are the bare minimum he needs to know in their work in Hunter Association and SCCP. Like the protocols, the organizational structure of the Hunter Association, and the operation of the Special Counterterrorism Task Force.
However, these are all official documents, so they are only a little less than the books of law.
It’s a bummer that he’s cramming the knowledge that could be studied for months, but what else could he say? This goes hand in hand with the job that he accepted.
Now, thinking about it, Shen Yuan had mixed feelings as he remembered what had happened just hours ago.
After finding out what the enemy wanted, Chairman Mao went his way and pulled up the lists of the suspected descendants of the Wei Clan—the possible targets of the Cardinals who bear the blood of fox spirits.
Actually, calling it a "list" makes it sound grand because the profiles he showed are only five individuals.
"What? Whatever happened to the Wei Family is a mystery at its peak. These are the results of utilizing the connections of my Qing Family, my authority as chairman of Hunter Association, and the collaborated efforts of all the best private investigation companies in Country C," Chairman Mao reacted when Shen Yuan looked at him like he was a disappointment.
"I’m not saying anything," Shen Yuan replied. With a not-so-serious sigh, the celestial fox spirit lowered his eyes to the documents and studied each profile as fast as possible.
And there, he saw his and Yanyan’s profile on the first page. It really wasn’t a surprise that their profiles were included, but what caught his attention was the faces of the other three people.
"Wow! They are incredibly good looking..." Lai Quan commented. As a mercenary, he’s always on the field, so he didn’t know that the other three on the list were an actor, an idol, and a top hunter streamer who uploads dungeon-diving content to a popular video-sharing website called Veu.
Shen Yuan wasn’t sure if they had the blood of fox spirits, but he must say they had a suitable gene to be considered a fox spirit cub, at the very least.
"Do you feel any special feeling when seeing them, Yuan?" Chairman Mao asked, his eyes pointedly looking at him as if saying: well, you know what I mean.
And seeing how suggestive Chairman Mao looked and understanding what the senior alpha male thought about him, it was impossible for him not to get an idea. Chairman Mao thinks that Shen Yuan belongs to the Wei Family because of the outline of tails and fox ears he sees through his Azure Eyes.
It was said that familial connection doesn’t stop in blood. It goes deeper than human eyes, or science could tell.
Chairman Mao is asking whether looking at these profiles makes him feel like family.
Well, since asks at the peak of the fox spirits, being the celestial fox spirit with nine beautiful white tails, he’s completely capable of sense if the other is of the same species. However, he needs to be physically close to them, like a few meters close.
So, he shook his head and said no. Chairman Mao calmly accepted his answer and told Shen Yuan his appointment.
"Then you would be the one responsible for protecting them."
"Only me?"
"Yes?"
Everyone looked at Chairman Mao with shock.
"Chairman Mao, you..." Admiral Wu Jin doesn’t know how he should react.
Obviously, he knew why these talented and skilled people looked at the chairman like he grew two heads.
Protecting these people means receiving all the brunt of the Cardinals. With his and his son’s experience, it is not a stretch to say that the Cardinals would send their best fighter to secure these other three. They failed twice, so their attacks would be stronger and more desperate once they struck again.
Unlike other tasks, which are done covertly, he was literally facing off with the Cardinals. He’s exposed.
In addition to that, Shen Yuan will only do it by himself.
Undoubtedly, this is more arduous than the other mission.
But to everyone’s surprise, Shen Yuan just accepted it with ease.
"It’s okay. I accepted this job to keep my baby safe, so just consider it like I’m adding three more dependents to my employee profile." Shen Yuan declared that it was just a piece of cake.
"Besides, judging by how hot my pictures are on social media, it’s not suitable for a face like mine to act covertly." Shen Yuan’s words were full of irony. Because if he wanted, he’s the best person to move stealthily.
"Perfect! Then let’s start by teaching you the fundamentals of our operation here in Hunter Association!" Chairman Mao said merrily.
Oh, how much he wanted to turn back time to slap Chairman Mao for his delighted tone.
But since he can’t, he has no choice but to do the task.
Working isn’t new for him, so he just soothes himself by thinking this is just an onboarding program before the actual work.
All of a sudden, three knocks sounded on the study’s door.
"Yuan?" man called
It’s Bai Tingfeng
