Chapter 85: Chapter 83: The Grandmaster’s Silhouette

Wu Li introduced the characteristics of Xingyi Fist, incorporating the Training Method of the Five Elements Fist, the power-delivery techniques, and the Stance Training Method of the Twelve Forms into the introductory course. These were the essence he compiled from various schools of Xingyi Fist, showing the significant effort he had put into it.

In addition to that, in the teaching of the Twelve Forms, Wu Li added several practical techniques to each form, which were not Killing Moves intended for real combat, but Techniques that could be used in the ring, such as Bear Form Elbow Strike, Chicken Form Stepping, Horse Form Stepping Knee, Snake Form Rib Strike, and so on.

The fighting techniques of Traditional Martial Arts didn’t consist solely of Killing Moves; some Techniques could also be used in the ring, and some Killing Moves could be slightly modified for use in the ring as well. Wu Li planned to differentiate the Killing Moves and fighting techniques of Traditional Martial Arts in the future, one for actual combat, the other for ring competition.

In fact, as early as 1979, when Sandboxing became a competitive sports event in our country, the state organized many experts of Traditional Martial Arts to do just that, summarizing and compiling the kicking, striking, and throwing Techniques from various styles of Traditional Martial Arts specifically for competition, while the Sandboxing promoted in the military and police was based on the Killing Moves of Traditional Martial Arts, focusing on capturing joint techniques and striking vital areas.

Early Sandboxing competitions emphasized spectacle, and to reduce injuries, many restrictions were applied, focusing mainly on scoring. Thus, all the Killing Moves of Traditional Martial Arts were abandoned, as were some joint techniques and capturing, especially leg techniques, since groin kicks were not allowed, making the springing kicks of Traditional Martial Arts almost entirely unusable.

Later, as commercial competitions like Boxing, wrestling, and Muay Thai demonstrated their potent money-drawing power abroad, domestic competition formats began to lean towards those overseas. It was evidently more convenient and easier to integrate the rules by directly borrowing and learning from the existing foreign Martial Arts techniques, so domestic Sandboxing began to adopt and absorb various techniques from foreign Martial Arts.

By now, domestic Sandboxing has evolved from the original Sandboxing. To better adapt to the current competition rules, it has absorbed numerous foreign Martial Arts techniques and has become a comprehensive fighting style. Consequently, many practitioners feel that what they learn has no relation to Traditional Martial Arts.

Indeed, not only they think so, but many of the older generation of Martial Artists also didn’t recognize Sandboxing as Traditional Martial Arts. They believed Sandboxing lacked Stance, forms, unique Fist characteristics, and philosophies, being solely for ring competition and unable to represent any Traditional Martial Arts style.

Take Yan Baili, whom Wu Li had encountered earlier. Although this Yong Chun master also once taught others Sandboxing, he ultimately went on to open his own Martial Arts school to refine Yong Chun Fist, striving to adapt it for the modern combat sports arena.

There are probably quite a few Martial Artists like Yan Baili in China, and Wu Li could be considered a junior among these people because he too wanted to make a mark in the modern combat sports arena with a distinct style or several styles from Traditional Martial Arts.

Compared to his seniors like Yan Baili, Wu Li’s advantage was unique because he possessed the most complete Traditional Martial Arts heritage in the world, with an accumulation of Martial Arts Techniques to reference and summarize that surpassed that of anyone else!

Just with Xingyi Fist alone, Wu Li could summarize what he needed from forty-seven different schools. The variety of Techniques and Killing Moves he could reference and refine was sufficient for him to establish an entirely new system, a system specifically designed for the ring!

The major difference of this system from modern Sandboxing lay in the different forms and expressions of Martial Arts power delivery.

Modern Sandboxing or modern combat sports almost entirely rely on exhibiting Ming Jin in the ring, requiring space for power delivery, even in close-quarter grappling it’s mainly Ground Skill-based. It can be said that at least under the rules of ring competitions, modern combat sports have developed the Ming Jin style of fighting to its pinnacle.

If Wu Li’s newly summarized Traditional Martial Arts system wanted to compete with the pure Ming Jin style of modern combat sports, it undoubtedly wouldn’t have much advantage.

Several UFC champions who researched and studied Traditional Martial Arts had, as practitioners of National Martial Arts would say, honed their Ming Jin to the peak and wanted to begin training in Dark Force. Thus, they borrowed and learned techniques from Traditional Martial Arts that utilized the power of muscles and bones; since it was quite difficult to further improve muscle power, they sought to enhance their muscle bone power; and since their grasp of space and distance had already reached exquisite precision, it was time to strengthen their short-range explosiveness.

For Wu, he was determined to establish an entirely new system, which would take the opposite approach, focusing primarily on the Dark Force power of Internal Fist, complemented by Ming Jin, with the addition of Grappling and Joint Techniques; this would be a system with its own unique advantages that also reflected the distinctive qualities of the Traditional Martial Arts system!

Moreover, Wu wouldn’t limit himself to just Xingyi Fist. In the future, he planned to summarize, improve, and innovate Martial Arts from various schools and styles, integrating them into the new Traditional Martial Arts system, allowing Traditional Martial Arts to flourish spectacularly in the arena!

As for the killing moves of Traditional Martial Arts, Wu intended to compile those as well, but he wouldn’t initially teach them in the gym. First, they could easily lead to accidents, and second, he feared that some might take advantage of this aspect to cause trouble.

However, this didn’t mean that Wu would shelve the Traditional Martial Arts’ killing moves. He already had some vague ideas about how to apply these moves, but for now, his energy was wholly devoted to the critical task of refining the Traditional Martial Arts techniques and establishing the new system.

In the introductory phase of his teaching, Wu incorporated some of his improved techniques. He believed that anyone who had previously learned Xingyi Fist or modern Martial Arts could easily recognize the practicality of this course in the arena, provided they purchased the course and studied it diligently.

In the upcoming advanced courses, Wu would introduce even more techniques. Of course, there would also be corresponding training methods and physical fitness exercises, culminating in a physical fitness test during the final advanced assessment.

If Traditional Martial Arts wished to achieve good results in the arena, they had to focus on physical fitness training just like professional fighters in modern Martial Arts, not just on maintaining good health. When the students later advanced to the higher-level classes, Wu would not be stingy in passing on the most precious Bone and Muscle Strengthening Method of Xingyi Fist. He even planned to have the gym sponsor the best students in the future, providing them with the necessary medication for Body Training free of charge!

In the past, Traditional Martial Arts were passed down from generation to generation with a sworn oath of secrecy, allowing only one or two true disciples per generation. This had resulted in the loss of much of Traditional Martial Arts. When Wu learned Xingyi Fist from his grandfather, there was no longer any demand for secrecy, but he was admonished not to use or lightly teach the Martial Arts killing moves.

Wu’s conclusion of the new Traditional Martial Arts system deliberately omitted the killing moves, so he had no intention of keeping it a secret. On the contrary, he hoped that more and more people would come to learn it.

If Traditional Martial Arts continued on this path without teaching the real techniques and failed to produce talents, it would be impossible for Wu alone to build a strong reputation for Traditional Martial Arts. Thus, he hoped that in the future, more and more of his gym’s students would achieve results in the modern Martial Arts arena using Traditional Martial Arts techniques.

One day, when he had summarized and perfected the new Traditional Martial Arts system, and his students had made their marks on Martial Arts stages around the world, would he then truly be considered a Grandmaster?

Wu looked out into the night, catching glimpses of the future Grandmaster’s silhouette.
