Chapter 309: Chapter 280: Wu Family Spear, The Spear King of a Generation

On January 4, 2021, Wu Li struggled to finish his final exam.

Under extreme anger, a person can do many things they’re not usually capable of, but that doesn’t include advanced mathematics; the same goes for professional exams...

On January 5, Wu Li and the Seeking Martial Arts production team once again headed to the United States.

After arriving in New York, Wu Li went alone to the Hongmen Zhiyuan Hall’s private hospital to visit Li San.

Li San was already able to walk on his own. When Wu Li saw him, he was slowly practicing Tai Chi in the yard.

Wu Li didn’t interrupt him and only approached after he had finished a set.

"Here you are," Li San said with a smile on his face as he saw Wu Li.

"Look at you, making my sister confess to you publicly."

Wu Li was startled and felt a bit embarrassed. During that live interview, Tina and Li Li had both confessed to him, and although he knew Li Li probably wasn’t serious, he still felt a little awkward about seeing Li San afterward.

Li San pointed at Wu Li and laughed, "If you really became my brother-in-law, that wouldn’t be bad."

Wu Li: "..."

Li San scolded with a smile, "What’s with that expression, my sister isn’t good enough for you?"

Wu Li: "Can we not talk about this?"

Li San shook his head, "Tch, that tone deserves a beating. If I weren’t injured, I would definitely have a fight with you."

Wu Li: "Cut it out, there will be a chance in the future."

Li San said discontentedly, "Say it, what do you need from me?"

Wu Li moved closer with a smile, attempting to ingratiate himself, "You know I’m shooting a variety show related to Martial Arts. Now that I’m in the United States, I was wondering if you, as a Double Flower Red Stick, could introduce me to a few masters from Hongmen to visit."

Li San: "You want masters?"

Wu Li nodded, "The higher the level, the better. Ideally someone like you, a Double Flower Red Stick."

Li San pondered for a moment before saying, "In the American Hongmen, including myself, there are only five people who qualify as Double Flower Red Sticks. It’s unlikely these people would come out into the public spotlight. As for Hongmen from other countries, I’m not very familiar."

"Mhm."

Wu Li had also considered this issue before coming. People like Li San, with his status as a Double Flower Red Stick, played their biggest role by helping in fights and deterring opponents in secret. Therefore, it was unlikely they would come out for an open interview.

"Then, are there any older Hongmen elders who were very skilled in their youth?" Wu Li asked.

In fact, Zhao Lixin’s master, Gu Qing, was previously recommended to Wu Li as such an elder, but that Hongmen predecessor had already passed away.

Li San thought it over, "There are many skilled Hongmen elders, but I’m not sure which ones would be willing to be interviewed publicly."

Wu Li: "Then, could you please ask around for me?"

Li San nodded, "Mhm."

After a moment, Li San suddenly said, "Oh, I just remembered someone. You could try him."

Wu Li: "Who?"

Li San: "He’s a retired Hongmen predecessor who was quite the legend back in his day."

Wu Li’s eyes lit up, "Tell me more."

Li San said with a smile, "When I had just started out, that predecessor’s fame was already spreading throughout the American Hongmen. My master used to say one line about him: ’A generation’s Spear King!’"

Wu Li immediately became interested, "A master spearman?"

Li San nodded, "That’s right, he practices Wu Shu’s Wu Family Spear."

Wu Li: "The Wu Shu who wrote ’Arm Record’?"

Li San: "Yes."

Wu Li expressed surprise, "The Wu Family Spear has a successor!"

Wu Shu, a Martial Artist from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, authored ’Arm Record’.

’Arm Record’ is a culmination of Wu Shu’s experiences and insights from his journey learning the Big Spear. It documents the teaching lineage, training routines, and methods, and also analyzes the features, strengths, and weaknesses of various spear techniques of that era. It clearly and methodically describes the differences between spears and sticks, the application of power, and theoretical explanations of spear techniques, making it easier for students to grasp spear skills.

Therefore, ’Arm Record’ is considered a comprehensive, well-documented, and theoretically sound masterpiece. It’s unmatched by any other ancient work on Martial Arts, remaining a pinnacle reference for anyone studying Spear Technique.

Wu Li had also read ’Arm Record’, and some of its content greatly inspired him.

Wu Shu’s ’Arm Record’ expressed his views on different spear techniques, but it didn’t detail the spear technique he himself practiced. Many later speculated based on the content of ’Arm Record’ that Wu Shu must have mastered and synthesized various spear techniques to create his own, the Wu Family Spear.

However, historical records do not mention any disciples of Wu Shu, leading many to believe the Wu Family Spear had been lost to history.

Wu Li’s Martial Arts System, claiming to encompass all Martial Arts from past to present, included only hand-to-hand combat and not specialized weaponry, so he could not acquire the Wu Family Spear. He had always regretted this, but now Li San mentioned that the Wu Family Spear indeed had a successor.

"Is it true? Are you sure he’s a successor of the Wu Family Spear?" Wu Li asked excitedly.

Li San understood Wu Li’s excitement; as a fellow Martial Artist, and one who practices Spear Technique, the chance to witness the legendary Wu Family Spear was indeed a great fortune.

He said, "It’s just rumors, as no one has seen the Wu Family Spear. However, that predecessor’s Spear Technique is indeed divine. Later, people said he used the Wu Family Spear, and he never denied it, so we eventually accepted it as true."

Wu Li nodded, regardless of whether it was the true Wu Family Spear, just the fact that Li San hailed the Spear Technique as divine was reason enough to visit. After all, Wu Li had firsthand experience of Li San’s spear skills.

"What’s the name of this predecessor, and where is he now?" Wu Li asked.

Li San: "His name is Sun Yiquan, and he currently runs a Chinese restaurant in New York’s Chinatown."

"A Chinese restaurant?" Wu Li was a bit surprised.

Li San chuckled bitterly, "Ten years ago, when I had just become a Double Flower Red Stick, that was the peak of Sun Predecessor’s fame. But due to certain events, he suddenly announced his retirement, and he was only 37 at the time. Later I visited him, and he said he wouldn’t use a spear again."

Wu Li frowned, "Why?"

Li San shook his head, "I don’t know. Only some of the elders know the details, and when I asked Sixth Brother, he didn’t want to talk about it."

"And yet you suggest I visit him?" Wu Li looked at Li San.

Li San smiled and said, "Who knows, maybe you’re lucky and Sun Predecessor will make an exception and demonstrate a move or two. Just give it a try."

Wu Li: "Actually, you just want to see Sun Predecessor in action, don’t you?"

Li San glared, "Don’t you want to witness the Wu Family Spear?"

Wu Li nodded, "Indeed, I do."

PS: Well, let’s stop the Chapter here. I’ll need to think through the next part of the storyline as it’s a story I’ve wanted to write for a long time.

I still owe two Chapters, and with National Day almost over, I’m quite anxious. I’ll try my best to release three Chapters tomorrow...
