Chapter 272: Chapter 248: Choices Regarding Charm
"Wow, that was impressive. It was like watching a movie, a lone man infiltrating enemy lines, unstoppable."
"Just as they say he’s a superhero, he really is like one."
"A 24-year-old captain, he’s got a bright future ahead of him."
"And he’s quite handsome, too."
...
American netizens were all expressing their opinions, growing fonder of the newly introduced Eric, especially after Jia Wei’er recounted exploits that certainly sounded legendary.
Wu Li examined Eric, thinking that the main purpose of this interview was to boost his popularity in the United States, so what was the meaning behind suddenly bringing on such a guest?
...
"Director, what does this mean?" Chen Gang asked the talk show’s director irritably from inside the studio.
The somewhat overweight director sat in his chair, looking through the glass window at the broadcasting hall. Raising his head and frowning at Chen Gang, he asked, "What are you talking about?"
Chen Gang pointed at Eric on the stage: "Why is there a second guest?"
The chubby director looked towards the stage: "There’s no why. It was planned to have two guests for this episode."
Chen Gang became angry, raising his voice, "Then why didn’t we know? Why didn’t you tell us in advance?"
The director got angry as well, standing up to face Chen Gang: "This is my show. I don’t need to explain why to anyone!"
"Ha?" Chen Gang let out an incredulous laugh. "Do you even know what you’re saying?"
The director’s face soured, pointing towards the door: "Get out!"
"You son of a..."
Chen Gang was about to grab the director when the staff on both sides rushed to stop him.
"Hey, don’t mess around!"
"Stop it, we’re going to call security!"
"Calm down, Director Chen."
"Keep cool, keep cool, Wu Li is still broadcasting live. We’ll talk after the show is over."
...
Meanwhile, in the broadcasting hall, people were oblivious to the chaos as the interview continued.
"Eric, why did you go in alone to rescue the hostages?"
"There were seven people on the other side, why did you dare to rush in?"
...
Jia Wei’er kept asking questions about the new guest Eric, and the audience’s focus had quietly shifted.
Gradually, an image of a brave, kind, upright soldier with immense capability and willingness to sacrifice emerged in front of the audience through Jia Wei’er’s questions.
"Wu, what do you think of Eric?" Jia Wei’er switched topics, suddenly turning to ask Wu Li.
Wu Li responded: "Without a doubt, an excellent soldier."
Jia Wei’er nodded, the familiar smile of his appearing on his face, which the audience knew meant he was about to ask some tricky questions.
"Wu, from my introduction of the things Eric did, do you think you could have done them?"
Wu Li didn’t hesitate, replying directly: "Of course."
Eric furrowed his brows slightly at the answer, but Jia Wei’er next to him exaggerated his expression, "Wu, I like your confidence."
Then Jia Wei’er turned to Eric: "So, I must ask you the same question, Eric. Could you do what Wu Li did during the terrorist attack on September 22?"
"Of course," Eric replied without any hesitation either.
Jia Wei’er made a goofy face towards the audience and shrugged, prompting laughter and teasing cheers from below.
"Both men are quite confident. Eric, can you dodge bullets too?"
Eric nodded: "Bullet evasion training is part of our daily routine, evading bullets with zigzag movements—something me and my comrades can all do."
"Wow!"
Applause and cheers burst from the audience.
Jia Wei’er asked with a smile: "Wu Li says he dodges bullets by intuition. What about you?"
Eric looked at Wu Li: "I don’t believe in intuition. I only know that in real combat, only the most scientific method of bullet evasion combined with rigorously practiced step technique actually works!"
Wu Li’s lips curled up into a smirk as he looked at his opponent, not in a rush to retort.
Jia Wei’er of course wanted to hear Wu Li’s thoughts, so he turned to him: "Wu, what do you have to say?"
With an almost teasing smile, Wu Li looked at Jia Wei’er: "I’d like to know if you’ve prepared any guns?"
Jia Wei’er was taken aback by the remark, while the audience immediately burst into cheers and catcalls.
"Wow, are we going to see a live demonstration?"
"They’re really going all out, huh?"
"Awesome, are they actually going to test it with guns on-site?"
"Ha ha ha, can’t wait!"
...
Because of what Wu said, the audience watching the live broadcast got excited.
Jia Wei’er smiled and shook his head, "Even if we had some, it’s not possible to experiment here."
Wu nodded and then turned to Eric, "So, you’re saying he can really fight?"
What is this? Jia Wei’er was about to go crazy. He had already understood that Wu, this kind of person, was completely different from ordinary stars, but he didn’t expect him to be so unpredictable.
This is a variety show, live broadcasting—why does this guy always want to use guns or to engage in hand-to-hand combat?
What he didn’t know was that, for the most part, Wu’s live broadcasts were actually spent doing just these things...
Eric noticed Wu’s gaze, which was utterly condescending, like a lion sizing up its prey under its claws, pondering where to bite first.
Such a look made Eric feel insulted. His face turned red as he clenched his fists and stared at Wu, seemingly ready to rush up and fight him.
A few seconds later, reason took over. Before coming on the show, he had watched some videos and read about Wu and knew that when it came to bare-handed combat, even his own combat instructor might not be able to defeat Wu, so if he rushed up now, it would be utterly humiliating.
"Your Kung Fu skills are impressive, but this is the 21st century. In the age of firearms, no matter how skilled the Kung Fu, it’s useless on the battlefield." Eric said coldly to Wu.
Wu nodded, "You’re right, it is the age of firearms, but Kung Fu is still useful. For instance, even if you had a gun in your hand right now, and I wanted to take you down..."
As he spoke, Wu stretched out his right hand and made a palm-flipping gesture.
"Just like this, so easy."
The audience below was in an uproar; probably no one expected the situation to turn so tense so suddenly.
Eric sneered upon hearing this, sat up straight, and looked at Wu, "My quick-fire record is five shots in 0.93 seconds, all hits. Do you think you can be faster than my gun?!"
Wu did not respond to Eric but turned to Jia Wei’er, "So, you guys really didn’t prepare guns?"
Jia Wei’er: "..."
"Ha ha ha!"
Below, Li Li couldn’t help but laugh out loud and said to Tina beside her, "His mouth feels like it could annoy people to death."
Tina looked at Wu on stage, her eyes filled with amusement.
...
In the studio, Chen Gang and the chubby director were pulled apart by their respective staff and, due to the changes in the hall, they stopped their argument and all looked towards the stage.
When they heard Wu’s ’So you guys really didn’t prepare guns,’ Chen Gang couldn’t help but applaud.
After listening to Eric’s introduction, he realized that NBC’s invitation might not have been well-intentioned.
He couldn’t figure out why at the moment. They were still in talks about the broadcasting rights for "Seeking Martial Arts." Did the other party no longer want the rights?
Amid his frustration, Chen Gang really wanted to terminate the interview right away. However, this was a live broadcast, seen by who knows how many American viewers. If he unilaterally ended the interview, it would severely affect Wu’s reputation afterward. And since NBC is a local TV station with many avenues to disseminate their voice, smearing Wu would be very easy.
Fortunately, Wu was as impressive as ever. With a few simple words, he didn’t let the other side gain any advantage.
"Jia Wei’er, let’s not dwell on this topic. Let’s move on to the next segment!"
The chubby director glared at Chen Gang, who was applauding, and then took the walkie-talkie to speak to Jia Wei’er in the studio.
A sinking feeling hit Chen Gang’s heart; there was a next segment?
On stage, upon hearing the director’s command through his earpiece, Jia Wei’er said nonchalantly, "Regardless, both of your past deeds have made people feel like they’ve seen real-life superheroes, and both of you being so young and handsome, it can be said you’re both quite charming."
Saying this, Jia Wei’er smiled and turned to the audience below, "I suddenly really want to know, if given the chance, which one the ladies down here would choose to date?"
This stirred up the audience, realizing this might be another interactive segment.
Sure enough, staff brought up a table, which had many bouquets of red roses on it.
Jia Wei’er stood up, looked towards the audience, and said with a smile, "For our next interactive segment, I want to see which of the gentlemen on stage the ladies here prefer."
"Here we have roses. If you like someone, just pick up a bouquet and give it to him."
"Come on ladies, this is a rare chance to get close to a handsome guy!"
Jia Wei’er laughed and waved his hands, signaling the women in the audience to come up on stage.
There were many enthusiastic and bold girls in the United States, and many were willing to go up on such an occasion. Thus, in no time, there were already five girls standing on the stage.
"Ladies, begin your selection," Jia Wei’er stood to one side and gestured to the girls with a wave.
A girl with a bust like surging waves went first, picking up a bouquet of roses and walking to the center of the stage.
She proceeded to Wu first, shyly glancing at him a few times, then went towards Eric and handed him the roses.
"Thank you."
Eric stood up, smiled as he took the flowers, and embraced her.
"Hey, can you tell me why you chose like this?" Jia Wei’er, holding the microphone, came to the girl’s side and passed her the mic.
The girl smiled, took the microphone, and said, "My dad is a soldier, and I’ve liked soldiers since I was young."
Jia Wei’er nodded, "Okay, thank you. Next."
The second girl, equally curvy, picked up the roses, without hesitation, walked straight to Eric and handed them over.
"Why did you choose this way?" Jia Wei’er asked as usual.
"He has suffered so much for our country and people, and has been hurt so much. In my eyes, he is a real superhero!" The girl spoke like this.
The whole place went quiet for a moment, then erupted in enthusiastic applause.
