Chapter 228: Chapter 205: Toshima Style, Sword Master

Outside the cafe’s main entrance, vehicles lined the curb. Two cars separated Wu Li from Li San, each taking cover in front of a different vehicle, while the group that had been with the burly black man had parked their car on the opposite side of the street, between Wu Li and Li San’s positions.

After hearing the gunfire, the opposition immediately retreated back into their car for cover, it took them a few seconds to realize they had stumbled into a street shootout.

Their car doors were still open, allowing the two muscular men inside just enough visibility to see Wu Li and Chen Gang across the street, and through the gaps between vehicles, to spot the burly black man lying motionless outside the cafe’s door.

The two glared at Wu Li with venomous eyes, observed the several gunmen rushing towards them, and then looked back at the lifeless black man on the ground. After exchanging a few words with their driver, their vehicle suddenly started.

The black van drove towards the opposite side of the street, with a quick turn it skidded to a halt, sideways.

Two gun-wielding men exited the vehicle, one bent over to run toward the burly black man, seemingly trying to drag him into the van, while the other, with his gun, approached the spot where Wu Li and Chen Gang were hiding.

The moment the van suddenly started and then stopped across the street, the gunmen instinctively fired at it, unsure if the vehicle had come to assist Li San.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

From the first shot to this moment, gunshots hadn’t ceased, shattering windows and peppering the body of the car with a pinging sound.

Within just a few seconds, the gunman had reached Wu Li and Chen Gang’s hiding spot.

"Get in the car-now!" he roared.

However, he was met with Wu Li’s fist.

Wu Li grabbed the man’s wrist with his left hand, flicked it aside, raised his right fist to strike, but he suddenly felt a chill down his spine, without any hesitation, he stepped back, ducked and shrank back into cover.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The man holding the gun, who had attempted to use Wu Li and Chen Gang as hostages, was hit with three shots, blossoming three flower-like splashes of blood.

Unexpectedly, four more gunmen appeared from behind and opened fire, obviously, they had planned to ambush Li San but decided to reveal themselves due to the change in situation.

Wu Li was certain that if he had hesitated for even 0.5 seconds, he too would have been shot.

"Damn it," Wu Li muttered under his breath, an undeserved disaster.

The other man didn’t have time to drag the black man back, he turned hearing the gunfire behind him and saw his partner lying in a pool of blood.

With a furious roar, he shot back without a second thought, but was quickly struck in the arm, his gun dropping to the ground.

He cried out in pain, clutched his arm, glanced back at the black man on the ground, gritted his teeth, abandoned rescuing his comrade, and dashed desperately towards the van. He had only taken two steps before a bullet struck him, staggering forward and falling, his body taking several more shots as he died.

The group sent to assassinate Li San were skilled marksmen, with blood running cold in their veins.

With eight gunmen advancing from the front and four from the rear, Li San found himself caught in the middle.

Li San knelt on one knee behind the front of a car, his hands now brandished two daggers, materializing from nowhere.

The daggers, over thirty centimeters long with blood grooves stained an ominous red, exuded an icy chill.

Surrounded by gunmen, isolated without help, it seemed he was deep in a dire situation, yet within the eyes of this Hongmen’s Double Flower Red Stick, there blazed a fiery determination, commanding an aura as intimidating as that of a ferocious tiger, ready to strike.

"Can Li San’s reputation really not intimidate anyone?"

Li San gripped a dagger reversed in his left hand and the other properly in his right, his eyes icy cold.

Just then, more vehicles approached from the front, three cars in total - Six Ye had arrived.

Upon seeing the incoming vehicles, the front eight gunmen immediately turned and fired, halting the advance of these cars.

Meanwhile, the van that had skidded to a stop on the right side of the street started moving again. The driver, who hadn’t died, after witnessing the grim fate of his two associates, and not bothering about the downed black man or securing Wu Li and Chen Gang, let his survival instincts take over. Seizing the opportunity from the sudden commotion ahead, he started to reverse the van.

The black van straightened its trajectory and drove backward in a frenzy.

Two gunmen on the street, while firing, dodged to either side.

An opportunity!

Li San sprang into action, shooting out like an arrow released from the bow, running swiftly behind the van.

Almost simultaneously with Li San’s dash, a figure darted forward - it was Wu Li!

Wu Li understood the four gunmen from behind had shot indifferently, it didn’t matter to them who got hit.

Perhaps their orders were to kill everyone, perhaps they found Wu Li too obstructive, or maybe they just enjoyed killing, regardless of the reason, Wu Li decided to strike first!

He did not want to wait for the four gunmen behind to pass by and suddenly aim a fatal shot at him and Chen Gang, that would put them at a too passive disadvantage, especially since Chen Gang couldn’t dodge bullets.

"Stay hidden, don’t run around!"

As the van sped past him, Wu Li spoke to Chen Gang and then followed closely behind the van in a dash.

Wu Li and Li San exchanged glances at the back of the van, their eyes meeting.

Li San was initially startled, but since he didn’t sense any hostility from Wu Li, he didn’t strike immediately. Wu Li, upon seeing Li San, understood instantly that they were both on the same page.

So, without hesitation, Wu Li leaped to the right, exposing his back to Li San.

Perhaps it was a martial artist’s instinct, but Li San also grasped Wu Li’s intentions and, without delay, leaped to the left.

Two gunmen stood in front of Wu Li, one on the left and one on the right, with a car between them.

Wu Li took a step forward, bent down, kicked his legs, and with a swift movement, dodged the incoming bullets while closing in on the gunman on the vehicle’s left side.

He lifted his left hand, gripping the gunman’s wrist, dragging it upward, and his right fist struck the man’s throat.

Crack!

The gunman’s eyes bulged, his mouth agape, as he instinctively reached for his throat.

Bang!

On the vehicle’s right side, the gunman behind the two men lifted his gun to fire, but the shot missed. Wu Li had already ducked down behind the vehicle for cover.

Without waiting for the gunman behind him to move, Wu Li darted out from the vehicle’s front, his left hand throwing a shadow towards the gunman’s face—Wu Li had snatched the gun from the man whose throat he had just crushed and threw it as a hidden weapon.

The gunman behind was startled, dodging the flying handgun, and then Wu Li, who had thrown the gun, rushed at him in the same motion.

Bang!

The gunman, on instinct, fired a shot, but it was aimed skyward because Wu Li’s punch had forced his wrist upwards, followed by a painful throb in his throat as Wu Li crushed his larynx with a punch.

Meanwhile, Li San had taken care of the remaining two gunmen with more lethal efficiency due to his dagger. He cleanly sliced one gunman’s neck, then ducked to avoid bullets, and pounced forward, emerging from behind the vehicle and throwing his dagger, which struck precisely in the neck of another gunman.

The two turned their heads to look at each other, with Li San showing a flicker of surprise at Wu Li’s combat prowess, while Wu Li found it to be expected.

Tai Chi Fist (Master Level), Bagua Fist (Master Level), Xingyi Fist (Master Level), Hong Fist (Master Level)...

Overall Score: S—(57%).

This was the result Wu Li got from a system detection on Li San; the man was a Tai Chi master who was proficient in over a dozen traditional martial arts.

Wu Li had watched the entire process of Li San avoiding an assassination from start to finish and admitted that had he been in the same situation, he may not have done better than Li San.

Behind them, all three of Boss Liu’s vehicles had come to a halt, with two blocking the street, creating a barricade. The people from the vehicles disembarked and returned fire, showing intense firepower.

The eight gunmen took cover behind nearby vehicles and fired back, resulting in a stalemate between the two sides.

Wu Li took cover in front of a car, planning to go back and find Chen Gang, when a series of footsteps approached.

He turned to look, and at the corner of the street to his right, a figure emerged from the darkness.

In the glow of the street lamp, Wu Li saw the newcomer: wearing a gray jacket and black pants, on his face, a fearsome Evil Spirit mask, and in his left hand, a long katana still in its sheath.

Under the dim streetlight, the ghastly face of the Evil Spirit mask seemed all the more eerie, while the eyes that showed were as calm as an ancient well.

As the person rapidly drew closer to Wu Li, the right hand grasped the handle of the sword.

Hushan Swordsmanship (Master Level).

Overall Score: B (26%).

Wu Li immediately conducted a system detection on the newcomer, his brow lifting slightly—a master level martial arts accomplishment with only a B overall score.

But Wu Li dared not relax, knowing that the opponent was a swordsmanship master with most of his skills focused on weaponry!

The difference between Japan’s Sword Dao and swordsmanship was stark; Sword Dao, practiced with wooden or bamboo swords, is a modern sports competition, focusing on striking to score points. In contrast, swordsmanship uses a real sword and is born for actual combat. Although Sword Dao evolved from swordsmanship, the two are vastly distinct like the performance forms and practical applications within Hua Country’s traditional martial arts.

Hushan Swordsmanship is an ancient style from Japan, originating from the Army Academy and meant for battlefield combat.

Twelve skilled gunmen weren’t enough to take down Li San, and now a sword master was sent!

It seemed almost comical that after twelve skilled marksmen had failed to kill Li San, now someone with a sword suddenly appeared, wanting to kill Li San. Yet, Wu Li, who was directly confronted by them, couldn’t muster a laugh.

In the blink of an eye, the newcomer had closed to within three steps of Wu Li. The right foot stepped forward, the body leaned, the elbow lifted, and the right hand gripped the sword handle, pressing down slightly, tilting up the tail of the sheath.

Clang!

The sound of the sword being drawn was like a low chant from an Evil Spirit, echoing down the bullet-ridden, spark-filled street.

A splendid flash of the sword sliced upwards from below at Wu Li.

Iaido, Sword Drawing Skill!
