Chapter 183: In pain
He stared at her only, his head tilting to the side.
"I know you are still there, Rohan. If you can hear me... I want you to know that I’ve missed you. Every second of the day without you feels like hell. I feel dead inside. I can’t seem to get ahold of myself without you. I need you to come back to me... please." She sobbed, no longer seeing his face as her tears began to pour down her lashes.
Because of that, she did not notice how his whitish eyes were flicking between black, red, and then white, and how he was shaking his head as if trying to get himself right.
"Rohan, if you are going to eat me, I want you to at least know this..." she whispered through her sobs. "I love you. I love you more than life itself, and I will always do no matter what you are. A demon, vampire, or even the devil himself, I will love you until death itself... I love you."
She cried and then closed her eyes, giving herself to him to do whatever he pleased as she couldn’t reach out to get the heart when his weight was pinning her down.
Instead of feeling his fangs sink into her skin, Belle felt the hesitant brush of his fingers against her wet cheek. Slowly, she opened her eyes, and there it was. One of his eyes had turned black and familiar, while the other remained stark white, cold and unrecognizable.
"Isa... my heart," he whispered softly. "Why did you come back? You shouldn’t be here," he told her, now cupping her cheeks with both hands. He could feel himself turning into what he did not want to, faster, because he had fought to have control, but he knew the control wouldn’t last long.
"Rohan?" she cried out quietly and placed her hands against his on her cheeks as she leaned into his caressing thumb. "You are finally back. I missed you." She turned her lips and kissed his palm where he no longer had his gloves on.
"You should go back. I am not safe," he groaned, his voice thick with a pain that seemed to tear from within. He leaned his head down, resting his forehead gently against hers, breathing in her scent like it was the only thing tethering him to himself.
"I don’t want to hurt you again. You shouldn’t be here... Go back," he said, his words shaky with restraint. And yet, he didn’t pull away. He didn’t move from her body. Instead, with a kind of aching desperation, he began to press soft, lingering kisses across every part of her face, starting with her closed eyelids, then her rain-soaked cheeks, down to her jaw, and finally, with trembling reverence, her lips.
He groaned into the kiss and pulled back without deepening it.
"Fucking hell. I don’t want you to leave me, Isa. But I am afraid of myself."
He moved away from her body, grabbing his head and groaning.
Without wasting time, Belle sat up and reached for the bag and opened it, and then she stopped, her eyes rounding at the sight inside the bag.
The heart inside it was now beating with a frantic rhythm that seemed like it wanted to come out of the bag, and then she realized it was because its owner was next to it.
"Rohan..." she called as she brought out the heart in her hand.
He shook his head. "Go away from me."
"Rohan, look what I brought for you," she coaxed.
"No. Leave, or I won’t be able to bear parting with you. Go away with whatever it is you bring. I don’t need it," he growled.
Belle did not listen to him. Since he wouldn’t turn around to see what she had for him, she decided to walk around to his front.
But when she began to move to him, he was standing up, about to run away, and without thinking her actions through, she gripped his leg and tripped him, letting him lose his balance and fall to his back. And like a feline, she moved swiftly and straddled his torso to keep him down to the ground.
If he wanted to, he could easily toss her off him and run away, but he didn’t move and only glared at her in displeasure with that one black eye that was flicking between red now.
He was parting his lips to speak, but she placed her good finger against them.
"Shh, look." She held up the frantically beating heart, and he turned his eyes to it. She saw him still, his good eye widening, and then he looked back at her.
"I brought your heart back, my love." She smiled down at him, but he stared at her unblinkingly like he couldn’t believe it, and like he couldn’t look away from the heart. He turned his gaze to it and stared like he was in a trance.
"My heart..." he muttered in disbelief, his voice barely above a whisper. But then, as if the rush of emotions stirred something unstable within him, something wild and dangerous, his body tensed, and Belle watched in horror as one of his eyes began to turn white again.
It was happening, he was losing control.
She couldn’t waste a single second now.
She brought the heart and then placed it against his chest as he began to shudder like he was about to turn rogue again.
Nonetheless, the moment the heart touched his chest, the tiny root-like veins on the plant latched onto his skin and began to stretch, piercing into the firm flesh of his chest. He groaned in pain, and Belle, watching in growing alarm as the vein-like tendrils dug deeper, began to panic when she saw blood trickling from his nose and mouth. His body started to jerk violently beneath her, each spasm more terrifying than the last.
"Rohan!" She rolled off his body when he began to convulse and spat out dark blood.
She reached out to pull out the heart that was now glowing red, and its tiny roots seemed to be carving a hole in his chest, but before she could do that, Kuhn had appeared and grabbed her wrist.
"Don’t. Let it be."
"How can I let it be? Can’t you see he’s in pain?!" she gritted furiously, but Kuhn did not let go.
"It’s supposed to happen like that. He has to go through the same pain he felt when the heart was being removed when it gets restored. Master said that to me. The heart will wash out the corrupted dark blood from his system."
Belle stopped trying to pull her hand away at those words, and then was forced to watch him suffer on the ground as the heart tried to attach to him and clean his body of the corruption.
"He’s in pain..." she muttered, unable to watch him shuddering in pain and coughing like that, with that much blood coming out of his mouth and nose.
