Married To My Ex's Brother, Reborn Miraculously -
Chapter 67: The trap
Chapter 67: The trap
Anne arrived at her childhood home, but the moment she stepped inside, an unsettling feeling crept over her. Something was not right.
Patricia greeted her with an overly bright smile, making Anne’s stomach tighten with unease.
This wasn’t normal. What was she up to?
Anne’s skepticism grew.
"You’ve finally come home after so long," Patricia said enthusiastically, pulling her into the living room and seating her on the sofa. "Ever since your father was hospitalized, you’ve barely visited. This is your home—you should come more often."
Home?
Anne sneered inwardly. It had once been her home—when her father was still around. But the moment he had his accident and fell into a coma, this place had become nothing short of a nightmare.
Patricia’s relentless assault and Lorie’s constant scheming had driven her away. If they hadn’t treated her so harshly, she wouldn’t have been forced to rely on others, nor would she have ended up depending entirely on Denis.
Now, watching Patricia feign concern, a wave of disgust churned in Anne’s stomach.
"I may not have given birth to you, but I’ve always treated you like my own daughter," Patricia continued with a sigh. "I only spoke to you harshly to guide you, to discipline you. It was never out of resentment."
Anne let out a bitter scoff. "To discipline me? Really? Locking me in a dark storage room and beating me with a stick—that was your idea of discipline?" Her eyes turned cold as she gritted her teeth. "Drop the act. No one else is here. Just tell me what you really want."
Patricia’s smile twisted into something cruel. "Since you prefer being straightforward, I won’t waste my breath with pleasantries." Lifting her chin arrogantly, she declared, "I’ve arranged your marriage. The groom has already paid the dowry, and he’ll be here soon."
Anne’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What did you just say?" she exclaimed. "How could you decide my marriage without even asking me?"
"I am your mother," Patricia shot back. "I have the right to make decisions for you. Mr. Robert is a wealthy man—he owns several luxury car showrooms. Besides, he likes you. You’ll be happy with him."
Anne’s stomach churned with fury and disgust. "Mr. Robert?" she repeated, her voice rising as she shot to her feet. "You arranged my marriage to a widower and expect me to just accept it?"
"So what if he is a widower?" Patricia countered sharply. "He is rich and can give you the kind of luxurious life any woman would dream of. You should be grateful he wants to marry you. As your mother, I’ve already given him my word. He’ll be here soon. Now, go change into something nice."
She grabbed Anne’s wrist, trying to drag her toward the bedroom.
Anne yanked her arm back forcefully. "I’m not marrying him," she shouted.
Patricia’s expression darkened with fury. "Why? Is it because of the sugar daddy you’ve been seeing?" she hissed. "You sold yourself for money—do you have any shame?"
Stepping closer, she sneered. "You may not care about this family’s reputation, but I won’t let you disgrace our name with your shameless actions. You’re not leaving this house until Mr. Robert arrives. Now, come with me."
She reached for Anne’s arm again, but Anne shoved her away. Patricia staggered and fell onto the floor with a sharp cry of pain and outrage.
Glaring up at Anne, she seethed, "How dare you push me?"
Anne looked down at her coldly. She didn’t make a move to help her get up. "You can’t force me into anything against my will." With that, she spun around and stormed toward the door.
"Stop her," Patricia shrieked from behind.
Just as Anne reached the doorway, three burly men rushed in, blocking her path. Her heart jumped into her mouth as she instinctively stepped back.
"Who are you?" she demanded. "Move aside and let me go!"
One of the men shook his head. "Sorry, Miss. We’re just following orders. We can’t let you leave."
Anne’s frantic gaze darted between them, her chest tightening with dread. She was trapped.
Summoning every ounce of courage, she clenched her fists. "This is illegal imprisonment," she exclaimed, her voice wavering with fear. "I’ll take legal action against you."
Despite the fear gripping her, Anne didn’t hesitate to warn them, "I’ll call the police right now." She pulled her phone from her bag.
Before she could dial, a hand snatched it away.
"You are not calling anyone!" Patricia bellowed, hurling the phone across the room. "Take her to the room."
Two men grabbed Anne by the arms and shoved her inside.
She stumbled, falling to the floor on all fours. A sharp pain shot through her palms and knees, but fear overshadowed it. Gasping, she turned to see the door slamming shut.
"No, wait—" She scrambled to her feet and rushed toward the door, only to find it locked.
She pounded her fists against the wood. "Open the door! Mom, please, don’t do this. You can’t force me into marriage."
Patricia’s voice came from the other side, firm but devoid of concern. "Stop shouting. You’re only wearing yourself out. Save your energy for tonight."
Then, her tone softened with feigned sympathy. "I may be strict, but I’m not your enemy. I don’t want you to be caught in a meaningless relationship only to suffer heartbreak in the end. Accept this marriage—it’s for your own good. Mr. Robert truly likes you. He will take care of you."
Tears streamed down Anne’s cheeks as she choked out, "I can’t marry anyone... because I’m already married."
"What?" Patricia exclaimed, and then a stunned silence followed.
On the other side of the door, Patricia stood frozen as if struck by lightning. ’She is already married! That man from the video... was her husband!’
Restless energy surged through her. She had already accepted five million from Mr. Robert in exchange for Anne’s hand. If the marriage didn’t go through, he would demand his money back.
’What do I do now?’ Patricia’s mind raced.
Meanwhile, Anne pleaded desperately. "Mom, please, open the door and let me go. My husband is waiting for me."
Patricia’s expression darkened. She wasn’t going to lose that money.
"You think you can lie your way out of this?" she snapped. "I won’t be fooled. Like it or not, you’re going with Mr. Robert tonight."
Anne’s heart lurched in sheer panic. "No, you can’t do this. I swear I’m telling the truth—I’m already married. Trust me, please..."
She pounded on the door, her cries breaking into desperate sobs. But on the other side, there was only silence.
