Chapter 63: Tania’s despair
Chapter 63: Tania’s despair
Love?
Denis frowned in uncertainty, questioning whether he still felt the same way about Tania as he once had. He had wanted her back in his life, yet lately, his thoughts had been consumed by Anne—even to the point of imagining her while he was having sex with Tania. He wasn’t sure if what he felt for Tania was love anymore.
"Denis, are you planning to leave me?" Tania’s voice wavered with a mix of anger and desperation.
Denis remained silent, and his lack of response only deepened her unease.
"This is because of Anne, isn’t it?" she pressed, her lower lip trembling as fresh tears spilled down her cheeks.
Denis exhaled sharply. "When you weren’t with me, Anne was. She took care of everything for three years, so of course, she left an impression on me. But the problems in my life right now aren’t because of her."
He turned away, avoiding her gaze. "The company’s recent troubles have been weighing on me." He didn’t tell her the whole truth.
A flicker of relief passed across Tania’s face upon hearing that his distress stemmed from work rather than Anne. Blinking away her tears, she forced a smile. "Let me stay with you. I promise I’ll take care of you and help ease your stress." She reached for his arm, leaning against his shoulder.
Denis instantly pulled away, shaking off her touch. "Don’t come here so often. My grandfather is returning soon—he won’t like it."
Tania’s momentary relief vanished, replaced by renewed frustration. Denis had always avoided taking her to his parents. "Don’t you think it’s time to tell your family about us—about the baby?" She narrowed her eyes, searching his face. "We need to get the marriage certificate."
Denis shot to his feet, his muscles tensing. "Tania, I’ve told you before—I’ll take care of you and the baby, but marriage isn’t happening."
Her expression darkened. "You don’t want to marry me?"
"Why does marriage matter so much?" he snapped impatiently. "We can stay together, raise our child, and have all the freedom we want. A piece of paper won’t change anything."
"I’m not here for a casual relationship," she retorted, standing up to face him directly. "I want recognition."
"You can have anything—money, a house, a car, jewelry—whatever you want. But don’t ask me to marry you."
"I don’t care about those things! I want to be your wife," Tania pleaded, gripping his hand. "I want my child to be born into your family."
Denis’s expression hardened. "I’ve said whatever I have to say. If you keep pressuring me, I’ll end this relationship."
The finality in his voice sent a shudder through Tania. Her dream of becoming Denis’s wife was crumbling before her eyes. No matter what she did, it never seemed to be enough.
A bitter thought crept into her mind—if she hadn’t made the mistake of leaving him in the past, would he have already married her?
But there was no time for regrets. She had to secure her place in his life—at any cost. Her eyes gleamed with fierce determination.
"If you don’t want me, I have no reason to live," she hissed. "Neither I nor my baby will be here to bother you anymore."
Denis turned sharply toward her, his brows furrowing. Before he could fully process her words, she bolted toward the kitchen, grabbing a knife. His eyes widened in alarm.
"Tania, stop! Put the knife down!" He rushed toward her, his pulse pounding.
"I’ll end it all right now," she screamed, her eyes wild with emotion. In a flash, she slashed her wrist.
"Damn it!" Denis lunged forward, yanking the knife from her grasp. He immediately grabbed her bleeding wrist, pressing down hard. "What have you done? Are you insane?" he barked. "You were willing to hurt yourself? And what about the baby?"
Tears streamed down her face. "If you won’t marry me, what’s the point of keeping this child?"
Her words struck him like a dagger. As much as he resisted the idea of marriage, he couldn’t bear the thought of his own child being harmed.
"Enough," he muttered, wrapping an arm around her trembling body and pulling her close to his chest. "You and the baby matter to me. Don’t ever think about doing something like this again."
He guided her to the sofa and sat her down. Taking her hand, he pressed it firmly against her wrist. "Hold it tight. I’ll get the first aid kit."
Denis hurried to a nearby cabinet, grabbed the medical kit, and returned to her. Kneeling in front of her, he carefully cleaned and bandaged her wound before pulling out his phone and dialing the doctor.
"Come to my place—now," he ordered.
Once the call ended, he turned back to Tania, his expression softening. Taking her bandaged hand, he gently ran his thumb over the gauze.
"Don’t ever do that again," he warned sternly.
Tania’s voice trembled as she asked, "Will you marry me?"
Denis let out a long sigh, contemplating her demand. He was a man who cherished his freedom, and marriage was the last thing he wanted. Besides, tying himself to Tania would only lessen his chances of reclaiming Anne. What he had with Anne wasn’t love, but he couldn’t stand the thought of Augustine taking something that belonged to him.
At the same time, he couldn’t let his child suffer. He needed to handle Tania carefully for now—he would deal with Anne later.
Pulling Tania into his arms, he whispered soothingly, "If marriage is what you want, I’ll give it to you. But I need time. Let me settle things at the company first. Then I’ll speak to my family about the baby, alright?"
Tania nodded, leaning against his chest. But a shadow of doubt flickered in her eyes. She knew she couldn’t trust his words. If she wanted to secure her future, she had to take matters into her own hands.
’No one will stop me from becoming Mrs. Beaumont. Not even you, Denis,’ she vowed silently.
