Chapter 31: Your husband is nothing but a failure.
Anne strode into the office, her posture rigid, her expression cold. "What do you have to say?"
Denis’s sharp eyes scanned her face, searching for any sign of nervousness, regret, or at the very least, helplessness. He wanted to see her crumble, to admit defeat, to beg for his forgiveness. He wanted her to stand before him, vulnerable, needing him.
But instead, she stood there—proud, unyielding, as if she didn’t need him at all. The more she challenged him, the angrier he became. His fingers curled into fists beneath the table.
"Where is the report?" he barked with irritation. "The meeting is about to start. The major investors will be here any minute. What do you expect me to say? That my secretary forgot to save the file?"
He scoffed, his glare piercing. "Is that what you want? To humiliate me in front of them?"
Anne let out a sharp snort, a bitter smirk twisting her lips. "So pretentious," she muttered under her breath, rolling her eyes.
Denis’s patience snapped. Her attitude—her sheer defiance—felt like a slap to his face. "What did you just say?" he growled. "Don’t dare mutter under your breath. If you have something to say—say it to my face."
Anne tilted her head, eyes narrowing in disbelief. He was still pretending—acting as if he knew nothing. A bitter laugh threatened to escape her lips, but she swallowed it down, her fury burning hotter.
"You know I completed the report," she snarled. "And you also know exactly who tampered with my laptop and deleted the file. But you won’t take action—because you want to humiliate me. You want to see me struggle."
Denis’s expression darkened. "Enough!" he roared, his voice echoing through the office.
But Anne didn’t flinch. "No," she shot back. "You won’t silence me today."
She took a step forward, eyes blazing with defiance. "You knew the truth all along. You checked the surveillance footage. You saw everything. But instead of holding the guilty party accountable, you decided to blame me—for being careless."
Denis leaned back in his chair, his lips curling into an arrogant smirk. "You’re right," he said in an infuriatingly casual tone. "I did check the footage. I saw everything." h
He crossed one leg over the other. "If you beg me... and apologize, I’ll help you." His words dripped with power, control—cruelty.
’The audacity!’ Anne felt her blood boil. ’He wants to break me.’
She had done nothing wrong, yet he expected her to apologize? But she refused to bend. Her disbelief quickly morphed into anger.
"Why should I apologize to you?" she demanded. "I am the victim here."
Denis waved a dismissive hand. "I don’t care about who is right or wrong," he said indifferently. "What matters is that you lied to me. You challenged me. You disobeyed me."
His cold gaze locked onto hers. "Now, kneel and say sorry. If you do, I’ll let this all go—as if nothing ever happened—and take you back."
For a moment, Anne was speechless and could only blink at him. Then, a low, sarcastic chuckle escaped her lips. "You still think I want to come back to you? Are you delusional? Or have you completely lost your sanity?"
She tilted her head slightly, studying him as if he were a bizarre specimen. It genuinely baffled her how he refused to accept reality.
Judging by his inflated pride, it was clear—Denis couldn’t comprehend the idea that someone like her had dumped him. But the truth was the truth.
Anne gave him a deadpan look. "I think you need a psychiatrist," she said flatly. "Get your brain checked—see if something is wrong with it."
Denis’s eyes flashed with a dangerous warning. His body tensed, radiating barely contained fury. "Anne Clair," he snarled, "don’t forget who you’re speaking to."
But Anne no longer feared him. She had once obeyed him, respected him—loved him. She had followed his every word, devoted herself completely. But that love was gone. Now, all that remained in her heart was resentment. And he was the reason for it.
"Until now, I respected you because I loved you. But I don’t feel the same way anymore. There is nothing left—no love, no admiration. Just disdain." She sneered. "You’re so desperate to control me that you’re willing to let your business suffer losses," she scoffed. "What kind of stubbornness is that?"
"You call me stubborn?" he shot back, eyes narrowing. "And what about you?"
He rose from his seat and crossed the distance between them. "You lied to me about breaking up. You conspired with my cousin to stand against me. And now, you’re putting on this act—as if you don’t want me back." His lips curled into a mocking smirk. "I see it clearly. You’re desperately trying to get my attention."
Anne’s breath caught in shock. ’Is he serious?’
"I’m giving you a chance," he declared. "Apologize to me, and I’ll forgive you. I promise you’ll remain my girlfriend. No one—not Tania, not anyone else—can take that place from you."
Anne stared at him, completely taken aback by his sheer audacity. "This is ridiculous," she shook her head, her voice dripping with scorn. "You still think I want to be your girlfriend?"
Her tone hardened, sharp as steel.
"You cheated on me, remember? Tania is pregnant with your child. And yet, you still have the nerve to think I’d stay with you?"
She let out a slow exhale as if pushing away the last remnants of the past. Her eyes pierced into his. "I’ve already given up on you. Accept reality. Take responsibility for your child and move on."
"Enough already," Denis snapped. Before Anne could react, his hand clamped around her arm, yanking her forward.
"You are my girlfriend," he growled. "My woman. And you can only be mine."
She gasped, her body tensing as she found herself far too close—his grip firm, possessive.
"Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can leave me." His voice dropped into a dark whisper. "And that so-called husband of yours – he is nothing compared to me. Do you really think he can protect you, that he will be able to cover your father’s medical bills?"
His voice was dripping with disdain. "If so, then you’re delusional. He is nothing but a failure."
His lips curled cruelly. "I heard he doesn’t even have a real job. You’re a fool if you think he can support you. He approached you deliberately—to get back at me. Can’t you see it? He is using you."
