Chapter 105: Augustine’s father was illegitimate, a bastard.

Audrey’s brow furrowed. She followed Anne’s line of sight and spotted an elegantly dressed woman walking in, her hair styled neatly, her makeup impeccable, and her entire outfit screaming luxury. She moved with grace to the reserved central table and sat down with an air of importance.

Audrey leaned closer to Anne and murmured, "That’s Denis’s mother, right?"

Anne gave a slight nod, her expression tightening. "Yeah... that’s her."

Before either of them could process the moment, Tania walked in.

Anne instinctively snatched the menu card and lifted it to shield her face. Audrey, catching on, did the same, though her eyes sparkled with curiosity as she peeked over the edge of the menu.

Tania walked straight to Jeanne Beaumont’s table and slid into the seat opposite her confidently.

"Well, well... it looks like they’re pretty tight," Audrey whispered. "Tania is definitely working her way in."

Anne’s grip on the menu card loosened as her gaze lingered on the pair across the café. Jeanne Beaumont sat upright, composed as ever, her expression unreadable but clearly engaged in a serious discussion.

Tania, on the other hand, leaned in just slightly, nodding at intervals, her lips moving with calculated charm.

Anne’s chest tightened with the sour churn of old wounds. She remembered the cold way Jeanne used to regard her, all polished smiles with ice behind the eyes. Not once had that woman treated her as someone worthy of her son. And yet now, Jeanne sat willingly across from Tania, the woman who had once abandoned Denis and betrayed him.

The hypocrisy stung more than Anne expected.

"They are up to something," Audrey said quietly. "This isn’t a casual meeting." Her eyes darted between the two women. "Tania is working fast. It’s almost impressive how she is trying to get Mrs. Beaumont’s attention."

Anne gave a faint, humorless chuckle. Seeing the two together stirred something in her. Even though she had closed the Chapter with Denis, the past still had its bite.

"What’s on your mind?" Audrey asked gently, snapping Anne out of her thoughts.

Anne exhaled slowly, pulling herself together. "Whatever they are talking about—it’s none of my business. I don’t want to get involved or even know. Let’s leave."

Audrey slid some cash into the menu holder, and the two quietly made their way out of the café.

After parting ways with Audrey, Anne made a quick stop at the nearby grocery store. She carefully picked out ingredients for dinner.

The last time she had cooked a surprise meal for Augustine, it had ended with him in the hospital, thanks to the seafood she had cooked. She wasn’t about to make that mistake again.

Once she was satisfied with her haul, she headed to a nearby flower shop. The scent of fresh blooms filled the air, instantly softening her mood.

She browsed through the vibrant, cheerful roses in mixed colors. Her lips curled into a quiet smile—she could already imagine Augustine’s reaction when she handed them to him.

But just as she started picking the flowers, a gratingly familiar voice pierced the calm.

"Picking flowers!"

Anne’s body stiffened. She turned slowly, her gaze falling on Tania, who stood a few feet away with her arms crossed and a condescending smile tugging at her lips.

The warmth in Anne’s face faded as fast as her smile. Her stomach twisted in irritation. Tania was the last person she wanted to bump into.

"I’m here to get some flowers too," Tania said, strolling a little closer. "For Denis. I wanted to thank him for the gorgeous gift he gave me—so thoughtful of him, really." She tossed her hair over one shoulder and added with an air of superiority, "I also just had tea with my future mother-in-law. You probably saw us, didn’t you?"

Anne didn’t answer. She simply stared back, her expression unreadable, though her fingers gripped the flower stems a little tighter.

Tania let out a self-satisfied chuckle as she plucked a rose from Anne’s hand, twirling it between her fingers like a trophy. "I told Denis’s mother about the baby," she announced, her voice dripping with pride.

"She was a little shocked at first, but eventually, she came around. She agreed to our marriage, of course—how could she not? I’m carrying the next heir of the Beaumont family." She placed a hand on her stomach and smirked. "She even said she’d take me to see Denis’s grandfather soon for his blessing."

Every sentence she spoke was designed to provoke a reaction. But Anne didn’t so much as flinch. She simply turned her attention back to the flowers as if Tania weren’t even there.

Inside, Anne was amused. ’A child? You want to secure your position with your fake child. You are quite capable.’

The silence from Anne was like a slap to the face.

Tania’s smile began to crack. She wanted a reaction—anger, jealousy, something. But Anne’s stillness only fueled her frustration.

"You go around claiming to be part of the Beaumont family," Tania sneered, stepping in closer. "But have you even met the head of that family? Has Augustine ever taken you to see his grandfather?"

For a brief second, Anne’s hand paused mid-reach as she remembered Augustine telling her to take her to see his grandfather on the weekend. A quiet sense of satisfaction bloomed in her chest, and she calmly resumed picking through the flowers.

That tiny gesture—still no words—was enough to push Tania closer to the edge.

"Why would he take you to the family mansion?" she hissed, her words cutting. "He doesn’t belong there anymore. He is nothing to them now."

Those few words were all it took for Anne to snap. She could endure jabs and taunts—but not a single insult directed at her husband. Her expression hardened as she turned sharply toward Tania, eyes blazing with fury.

Tania, unfazed, wore a twisted smile of satisfaction. This was the reaction she had been waiting for. Slowly, she leaned in, her tone dipping into a whisper laced with poison.

"Do you know why Denis and his father despise Augustine so deeply?" She gave a dramatic pause, then delivered her blow. "Here is the truth—Augustine’s father was illegitimate, a bastard."

Anne’s breath caught. Her whole body went rigid in disbelief. A sharp ringing filled her ears, drowning out everything else.

"Stop spreading such filth," she snapped, her voice trembling with anger.

But Tania only gave a mocking laugh. "Oh, I am not lying. It’s fact," she said, reveling in the chaos she was stirring. "Grandpa Dimitri had a mistress. The child from that affair—Augustine’s father—was raised outside the family circle. He was never a real Beaumont. That’s why Denis and his father loathe him so much."

She leaned back, her grin widening. "And that’s why you’ll never be accepted. No matter what you do, they’ll never let you or Augustine in."
