Chapter 287 - 288: Old Hui Arrives
Chapter 287: Chapter 288: Old Hui Arrives
Mrs. Xu was very satisfied with his answer. Her daughter was the treasure she cherished in the palm of her hand, naturally unwilling to let her suffer even the slightest grievance.
"Huo Chen," she said, "now that you’ve made these promises, you must follow through. You can’t just put on a show."
Huo Chen would not dare, his gaze earnest as he replied, "Auntie, rest assured, when Huo Chen gives his word, he means it. If I fail to deliver, may lightning strike me."
Xu Ying squeezed Huo Chen’s hand and whispered, "What about Old Hui?"
"At home. With so many people here, I was worried he might scare everyone." Huo Chen’s voice lost some of its enthusiasm; he had wanted to bring Old Hui with him. To him, Old Hui was like his second parents. Without Old Hui, he might have lost his life long ago.
But, Granny Huo felt it was unsafe to bring Old Hui, worrying about what would happen if he clashed with the Xu Family members. It wouldn’t be good to cause a scene on such a joyous occasion.
Huo Chen also feared that bringing Old Hui might ruin the engagement, so he didn’t dare to bring him along.
Xu Ying’s tone carried a hint of coquettishness, "Bring Old Hui here, I miss him." The first time she had met Huo Chen, Old Hui was there, fiercely protecting Huo Chen even though he was on the brink of death himself.
Moreover, animals have a keen sense of spirit, and Old Hui probably already regarded Huo Chen as his own child.
Huo Chen’s eyes sparkled with excitement and he gave a slight nod.
The two sneaked away quietly.
Back in the Huo Family courtyard, Old Hui lay with a listless look in his eyes, his voice a low whine, clearly in a bad mood.
Hearing the familiar footsteps outside, Old Hui immediately leaped up, his tail wagging.
Upon hearing Old Hui’s voice, Huo Chen’s heart swelled with excitement: "Old Hui!"
"Hoooow" Old Hui let out a joyous howl and leaped straight onto the courtyard table, then with a mighty leap, jumped over the courtyard wall.
Xu Ying’s eyes sparkled as she saw Old Hui.
She reached out to him, and Old Hui, remembering Xu Ying, whimpered softly and rubbed his head against her hand.
His odd appearance showed no trace of a fierce wild wolf; he was as docile as a dog.
When they returned, they led Old Hui back with them.
Xu Qingqing happened to see this and looked thoroughly disgusted: "Bringing a wolf to an engagement? You can’t be treating the wolf like your mother. I can’t believe my cousin’s future mother-in-law could be a wild wolf." Xu Qingqing said, laughing.
Xu Ying’s chilly gaze fixed on Xu Qingqing.
Xu Qingqing couldn’t help but feel a chill come over her but still retorted defiantly, "What you looking at? Am I wrong? That wolf saved Huo Chen and raised him for a long while; isn’t it like his mother? Xu Ying, you better treat your future mother-in-law with respect."
Xu Ying strode quickly towards Xu Qingqing, raised her palm, and delivered a swift slap, "Xu Qingqing, if you can’t speak properly, then shut your foul mouth. Old Hui has been benevolent to Huo Chen, and we will certainly treat her well; we don’t need you to worry about it."
Xu Qingqing, clutching her face, was incredulous, "You’re just embarrassed and lashing out. Otherwise, why would you hit me? No one is forcing you to acknowledge Old Hui as your mother. Do you really need to go to such lengths to pretend?"
"I hit you because you’re disgusting. You’re not even married yet, but you’re already spreading gossip. Just imagine, when you do get married, won’t you make life impossible at your husband’s home? I wonder which unlucky man will end up marrying you," Xu Ying said with disdain, dusting off her hands.
"Let’s go. There’s no need to get angry over something dirty." Xu Ying said while patting Old Hui gently, "You raised Huo Chen; naturally, you’re like his reborn parents. Huo Chen and I will definitely treat you with care, Old Hui."
Old Hui could sense who was kind to it and who wasn’t, feeling Xu Ying’s goodwill, it leaned towards her.
The return of two people and one wolf gave everyone in the courtyard a big scare.
Granny Huo’s face even changed color, looking at her grandson with clear disapproval, "Huo Chen, why did you bring it here? Send it back right away."
"It’s fine, Grandma, Old Hui won’t bite," Xu Ying assured, then ran to Mrs. Xu and acted spoilt, hooking her arm: "Mom, please let Old Hui stay.
Huo Chen’s life was saved by Old Hui when he was little; Old Hui is getting older now and definitely wants to see Huo Chen settle down."
Mrs. Xu had no temper when it came to her daughter and nodded in agreement.
There was still some meat prepared at home, and Xu Ying immediately gave a big bowl to Old Hui.
The little ones in the family, filled with fear and curiosity, couldn’t help but inch closer to Old Hui.
"Little aunt, can I touch Old Hui?" Shitou asked Xu Ying curiously.
Hu Zi turned his head to Huo Chen: "Little uncle, can I touch it?"
At the sound of this address, Huo Chen’s smile grew even wider as he picked up Hu Zi and walked towards Old Hui.
Hu Zi, seeing Old Hui so close, was somewhat afraid; his extended hand paused midway.
Huo Chen reassured in a gentle voice, "It’s okay, touch it, little uncle is here!"
Hearing this, Hu Zi stretched out his small hand and touched Old Hui, his mouth immediately breaking into a grin: "I touched a big wolf, I’m a brave kid."
Shitou was stunned by this sight; his little brother was a real flatterer, not even married yet but already calling Huo Chen little uncle, that was too much.
The second uncle said, Huo Chen marrying into their family was like a pig knocking over cabbages.
Looking at Old Hui, Shitou was conflicted, wanting to touch but also scared; he glanced at the happily touching Hu Zi, without waiting for his reaction.
The children from his second uncle and third uncle’s families also ran over.
Each of them called out to Huo Chen as little uncle.
Shitou could no longer stand it, clenched his fists: "Little uncle, I want to touch too."
Xu Ying immediately burst into laughter: There goes their pride.
A single wolf got them to change their tune; they should at least get a red envelope for this.
Just as Xu Ying finished the thought, she saw Huo Chen take out a few red envelopes from his pocket, giving one to each child.
She immediately covered her mouth; could this guy actually hear what she was thinking?
"Come on, everyone, eat up; why are you all gathered here instead of eating?" Grandma Xu urged.
The children, intimidated by Grandma Xu, quickly ran to their respective places to start eating.
The Xu family home was filled with joy, but Directors Gu and Sun found themselves in a less favorable situation; Mr. Ma had claimed it would be quite simple at first, like growing wheat was as simple as child’s play.
But now, two days had passed, and there was no sign of the wheat sprouts.
Wasn’t it supposed to grow quickly?
"Mr. Ma, when can we expect these wheat sprouts to come out?" Director Gu asked sternly, their people in Yu County couldn’t wait too long.
Ma Yiguo was drawn by the joyful noise from the Xu family; he hadn’t expressed his feelings to Xu Ying, and she was already engaged.
His romance had failed before it had even started; it was too cruel.
"Comrade Xiao Ma, our director is asking you a question!" Director Sun quickly patted Ma Yiguo’s shoulder.
Ma Yiguo came back to his senses, somewhat curious: "What’s up?"
"Mr. Ma, when will these wheat sprouts be ready?" Director Gu asked impatiently.
Ma Yiguo replied indifferently: "Haven’t they sprouted already? I reckon in a couple more days they’ll be fine. Once they sprout, they grow quickly; you don’t need to worry too much."
